“I noticed the upper vents on the microwave have wide open holes with not much grate for protection from dust or debris falling in. Is this normal? Is there some kind of ventilation cover for the top to protect the vent more?”

I bought a new one 7 years after this post and still no grill at the top front of the microwave! I thought I left the part in the package and looked up for it all over the place. It's a big house things can fall into it on the top shelf. Hello whirlpool designers pay attention to the feedback
