There is still a little bit of a gap on the sides. Crumbs could definitely drop through the sides. You could probably even drop a piece of paper between the cabinet and range. I believe I saw maybe on the whirlpool site or another appliance parts site - a kit that you could purchase called something like a "trim kit" to cover up that spacing gap. From what I remember it wasn't very expensive. You do get more space between your burners etc surface wise on a slide in than on a freestanding model but they are also more expensive. So depending on what other features you need slide in plus the trim kit maybe the way to go
