The heater does have to be vented. At first i didn't like this, but I realized this is preferable as we installed it for summer a/c and have left it installed as we're now using it for the heat. I'm not sure of the exact hose length, but it's not too long as the unit has to sit in front of the window due to hose length.

Unit must be vented from the space being conditioned - otherwise you are not removing heat (or conversely adding heat if in heat pump mode) only moving it around. The duct is uncomfortably hot to touch when cooling.
