I suppose it depends on your tolerance, but we do not find it so. We have had guests twice now who have used it and they thought it was quiet enough. Our granddaughter says it's like a white noise machine which she sleeps with at home.

No not at all. Super quiet. I also have a window unit by my bed that makes a lot more noise, and comparably this portable unit makes less than half the noise. When I would have it running and a fan as well, I couldn’t hear the AC over the fan.
