“I'd like to play a World of Warcraft off-line. Long ago I was able to simply slap in a disc and play - no internet required. Where can I find such a game today? Or at least a game that would only require an internet connection for the initial download?”

World of Warcraft has never allowed offline play. It is an MMO, the O stands for online. You may be thinking of the RTS games called Warcraft, but World of Warcraft has and will always be online only.

This is World of Warcraft, a massively-multiplayer (MMO) rpg set in the universe of the Warcraft games. There's no such thing as an offline mmo-rpg, because it's in the title (mmo), and it would otherwise be just an rpg. WoW - mmorpg - online only, paid subscription, and disc-less to play Warcraft - strategy game series - offline, used discs (probably)
