This is a fun and lively way to have a history lesson. It is set to music that is up beat and fast moving.

If you are a fan of musicals, this should be a part of your collection! Set in Independence Hall just prior to the War for Independence, the film tells the story of the days leading up to the Declaration, how the opposing sides expressed their differences, and how through ultimate compromise a final document was drawn up that was acceptable for all those concerned. Though somewhat historically inaccurate in some regards, it does a wonderful job of characterizing John Adams as a firebrand that kept the process moving forward in order to drive the formulation of the eventual Declaration. Performances by William Daniels (John Adams) and Howard DaSilva (Ben Franklin) are particularly noteworthy for their portrayal of the humanity of the historical characters, and the portrayal by John Cullum of South Carolina Representative Edward Rutledge particularly demonstrates the critical issues that divided Congress at that time. I highly recommend this film to history buffs and music buffs alike.

    one of my favorite musicals

1776 is the movie version of the Broadway production of the same name. It's taken mainly from the letters written between John Adams and his wife, Abigail. Howard DeSilva as Franklin and the rest of the cast play off of each other very well. We sometimes forget that they fought the slavery issue then but couldn't resolve it. Unlike some musicals, you almost forget it's a musical because the story is told so well.

Historically correct, extremely patriotic and very entertaining! I use it in teaching Government and History classes. It should be shown on TV every 4th of July; much like "Miracle on 34th Street" at Christmas. A musical that men will enjoy !!

Old Movie Just Getting It's Proper Due

This is an old movie but it is just now beginning to garner the respect it is due. It reminds us that we are not a country of easy choices that just came to us en mass, but instead that we have wrestled for freedom and what it really means to us all.

Cute musical with average action. Songs are not very memorable. Plot limited showing a history of the constitution development and the people behind the birth of our nation.
