Patriotism and musical exuberance collide in Hollywood's retelling of American history with a newly restored director's cut of the musical 1776. Columbia's work on this 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is very nice. Sporting a solid array of colors and well-saturated black levels, this image appears to be very evenly produced save for a few instances of edge enhancement in a few key scenes. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and should please those with home theater systems. With many instances of directional effects and a crystal clear soundtrack, this disc's audio presentation should make fans sit up and sing. Also included on the disc are English and French subtitles. The extra features on 1776 are small but substantial. Included on this disc is: a very enjoyable commentary track by director Peter H. Hunt and screenwriter Peter Stone, as they discuss the restoration process of the film and how it was brought to the silver screen; a few screen tests of some of the actors in the film; and theatrical trailers for the film and other Columbia musical movies.

    Synopsis

    1776
The first independent production of former studio mogul Jack Warner, 1776 was adapted from the hit 1969 Broadway musical by Peter Stone and Sherman Edwards. William Daniels, Ken Howard, and Howard Da Silva are among the many actors who recreate their Broadway roles. The story is set during the first Continental Congress, when the Declaration of Independence was drafted by such founding fathers as John Adams (Daniels) and Benjamin Franklin (Da Silva). The script attempts to "humanize" these remote historical figures by contemporizing them -- particularly the character of Ben Franklin. Blythe Danner's character of Martha Jefferson is expanded for the film version to allow for an elaborate outdoor production number. After 1776, Warner made only one more film, the 1972 "grunge Western" Dirty Little Billy. On an added note: the picture was originally rated G with its theatrical running time of 141 minutes. It was later expanded to 166 minutes; the added scenes caused the MPAA to re-rate it PG (for language) in 1992. Both versions are available on video. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

If you are a fan of musicals, this should be a part of your collection! Set in Independence Hall just prior to the War for Independence, the film tells the story of the days leading up to the Declaration, how the opposing sides expressed their differences, and how through ultimate compromise a final document was drawn up that was acceptable for all those concerned. Though somewhat historically inaccurate in some regards, it does a wonderful job of characterizing John Adams as a firebrand that kept the process moving forward in order to drive the formulation of the eventual Declaration. Performances by William Daniels (John Adams) and Howard DaSilva (Ben Franklin) are particularly noteworthy for their portrayal of the humanity of the historical characters, and the portrayal by John Cullum of South Carolina Representative Edward Rutledge particularly demonstrates the critical issues that divided Congress at that time. I highly recommend this film to history buffs and music buffs alike.

1776 is the movie version of the Broadway production of the same name. It's taken mainly from the letters written between John Adams and his wife, Abigail. Howard DeSilva as Franklin and the rest of the cast play off of each other very well. We sometimes forget that they fought the slavery issue then but couldn't resolve it. Unlike some musicals, you almost forget it's a musical because the story is told so well.

Yeah that's a bold statement but I feel it's true. I first watched this in Middle School and it made the material come alive. Informative and entertaining, this is now one of my favorite films! Great acting, great music, very educational. This film is the total package and looks great on Blu-Ray!

This is an old movie but it is just now beginning to garner the respect it is due. It reminds us that we are not a country of easy choices that just came to us en mass, but instead that we have wrestled for freedom and what it really means to us all.

Historically correct, extremely patriotic and very entertaining! I use it in teaching Government and History classes. It should be shown on TV every 4th of July; much like "Miracle on 34th Street" at Christmas. A musical that men will enjoy !!

One of the more underrated musicals of the 70's, with a powerhouse, bring down said house performance by William Daniels. Well worth putting in your library.
