Bought this after I returned a Vizio soundbar system that did not work out for me audio quality-wise. After about a month now I am liking it. Up front, make a note that this is NOT a system that will work well in a true home theater environment. Where you have a dedicated room and want a quality theater audio experience. But this is not being marketed as such. In my opinion, good for an entry-level home entertainment sound system that has decent sound and is highly configurable for a budget price. In my use, I wanted a nicer sounding sound system for a general use, family room TV (55" 4K Sony). To where I was not looking for a booming, full surround home theater system, which we already have. I have an older but upscale Yahama receiver for that purpose and based upon that performance, I decided to try this Yamaha system. For my needs it is a very good system. The receiver has a boatload of options that are easy to understand and allows you to configure your sound experience with a lot of granularity. You can configure the surround settings, individual speaker volume, sub woofer crossover, and much more. All while sitting on your couch using the on-screen menus on your TV. HDMI pass-through for 4K and ARC are a plus. I have my Dish Hopper receiver connected via HDMI to the receiver then the HDMI out on the receiver to my ARC input for the TV. It passes HDMI CEC commands so I only have to press the TV power button and it turns everything else on or off. Do not see any image quality degradation in using the HDMI passthrough. However, while I don’t not have a PhD in audio/video, this receiver is only capable of passing 4K 60Hz at 4:2:0 chroma. Think this only comes into play if passing through a high quality 4K PC graphic card video signal to a TV. The speakers are the weakest link. They have thin, plastic housings and feel low-quality. The sound is OK considering, but to me sound hollow. Like there is an echo or resonation because of the plastic. I pick this up more on the center channel speaker. I ended up replacing the two fronts with small speakers I had where they did sound a little better. Since I do not need the back surrounds, I used the regular speakers in the front of the room, far to the edge of the room and pointing up to the ceiling from the top of the entertainment center. Gives more depth that I wanted but not the true surround. Found out that I use the 5 channel audio setting for a fuller sound than the “straight” processing where it processes the audio signal as it is sent from the satellite receiver. I also put the center channel speaker behind the TV to reflect off the back wall then reduced the center level to a point where I don’t have the over center-focused sound and it blends in more with the l/r speakers for a wider sound. Sub has individual settings for control and is booming enough for a family room setting without booming the lamps off the end tables. You can and will spend a LOT of time messing about with the settings, levels and other features on the receiver until you get it to your liking. Which is a good thing in having those options as opposed to a more limited soundbar. Take my suggestion and have a pencil and piece of paper handy to remember what values you have been trying and like/hate so you can fine tune. I found the auto-calibration process set the equalizer to settings which made the audio sound too 'bright'. I used that as a basis for my own customization. The virtual cinema front is more gimmicky to me. Sounded fake and tinny. Overall, a good choice for a simple yet powerful audio receiver with a lot of features like Bluetooth, audio scenes, auto calibration/setup and more.

This system is much higher quality than the soundbar/subwoofer and Bluray/surround system combos out there. I purchased this system to replace the above mentioned items, but it turned out to be a huge upgrade. The sound and 4K video pass through quality is phenomenal. I upgraded the included speaker wires to the Monster Platinum wires, but, otherwise, this is a high quality, stand-alone, excellent purchase!

My previous system had an HDMI port break, leaving it unusable. I went in to find another unit and was recommended this one. I use a projector and this had the HDMI out and 4 in, which is also very convenient. This allows you to not need an HDMI splitter, which I went to buy that day. It allows you to easily go between all your different systems or whatever else you have plugged in instead of having to switch cords, which lead to my old one breaking. The sound is great on it and the subwoofer also adds to that! Overall this was a great purchase and so far I have no complaints!

Nice HT combo for a small to mid size room

I used this HT on my family room which is relatively small, the sound quality is magnificent, I am sort of picky with the quality sound and I can say that the audio is really good. I love the ARC capability on the HDMI as it avoids more cables to and from the TV. The price is worth for the good quality of equipment. So far no complaints (being using it for 4 months). Suggest using the instructions (IOM) shown when connected to the TV. Areas of improvement: the bluetooth range is not very good, you need to be close to the receiver to avoid interruptions. The subwoofer needs to be turned on and off manually. When using the external jack for input, you will loose quality of sound.

Amazing sound. Simply incredible. Sound is crisp and rich but deep at the same time and the bass packs a punch. I prefer to go easy on the bass myself so I toned it down but this thing can kick! I personally enjoy multi-directional sound. I like to feel sounds are coming at me from all directions. Since movies nowadays come fine tuned to give priority to the front and center speakers during most of the movie and the sound coming from the surround speakers is not very noticeable unless it's an action scene, I made a couple of tweaks that I'm sure sound purists would crucify me for, but what can I say. I like to feel my surround sound at all times, not only during action sequences. So I went into the settings of this beauty and increased the levels of both surround sound speakers by 3 units and decreased the levels of the front speakers by one unit. Have in mind that for this settings I'm sitting on a couch dead center in the room. If you're closer to the screen, tweak your settings accordingly, but for me the goal is that a sample sound, should reach me with the same intensity no matter where it's coming from. The result is amazing. Even during a simple cafeteria scene in a movie, you feel you're there. You feel all the people talking and whispering around you. It's awesome. The amount of settings you can configure on this thing are also pretty deep, if that's your thing. I'm also loving the Bluetooth option. I didn't think I was going to use it at first, but I have an app on my iPad that produces the sound of rain and now, every night when I'm about to go to sleep, instead of just playing the sound of rain through my iPad speakers like I used to, I do it through the surround sound. Words can't describe how awesome it sounds. I feel like I'm in the middle of the rain-forest. I'm sleeping like a baby. Oh and by the way, it took be a little bit of digging to find this but if you press the INFO button on the front panel (which does not exist on the remote), you can have the unit display the sound codec being used by the decoder at all times. So now, instead of just saying HDMI1 in big letters in the center of the display, now it says HDMI1 in small letters in the upper left corner of the display, and in the center, in big letters, now it reads DTS MASTER AUDIO, or DOLBY TRUE-HD, or whatever codec you're using. I don't know about you, but when I'm feeding fully uncompressed sound into this beauty, I like to see it on the screen. I'm crazy like that. All in all, you'll be hard pressed to find a receiver of such amazing quality along with a set of speakers of this quality, from a reputable brand like YAMAHA for this price anywhere else. Best bang for your buck. And I mean BANG!

My First AV Receiver and I Won't Be Going Back

I'm not someone who grew up having a lot of luxury, so it was not until I was an adult that I understood what surround sound really was. I'd tried various methods to get surround sound for my TV without investing in a receiver without satisfactory results, so I decided to take the plunge, and I'm very happy with my purchase for the most parts. This receiver was one of the only ones I could find that came with a set of 5 speakers. Most receivers either don't come with speakers at all or only come with a soundbar. A sound bar would be better than nothing, but it would not truly provide the experience that I was looking for. This, though, supports true surround rather than just 2.1, and it's a great buy for someone like me who is just getting into using surround sound in my home. I am very satisfied with the results. I bought this mostly for the purpose of gaming, and it really does make me feel more engrossed in the game when supported. Even with regular audio, it enhances the experience with much more dynamic sounds than what my TV natively supports. Setting it up was relatively easy. I would strongly suggest investing in a wire stripper before trying to hook up the speakers, and it would probably be a good idea to buy your own wire rather than using what is supplied. Some people also suggest Banana plugs, but I honestly thought they just made set-up more complicated. Hooking up other devices to the speaker is easy for the most part, but I was disappointed that it does not support component video, only composite and HDMI, so you may have some issues hooking up older devices. One thing that is nice is that you can pair the receiver with Bluetooth compatible devices. It makes it a breeze to stream music from my phone over the speakers. It also has an auxiliary audio input and optical input, so you could connect basically any audio device to this. If I could, I would probably like to have an extra optical input, but I understand that most people probably need it, so that's very minor. The remote control is easy to use, and you can customize the way the receiver behaves. Inputs can be renamed or skipped as desired, but it also recognizes most devices connected by HDMI. It will even recognize the individual inputs on HDMI switchers. I really have no major issues with the device. I don't know whether it's the best value, but it was easy for a first time user, and it was certainly convenient. If you're looking for a receiver, this is a great place to start.

The Yamaha receiver included with this kit provide rich sound for all of the speakers provided. The only thing that kept the system from receiving 5 Stars was the fact that the center channel as well as the front left and right speakers have very little midrange power. Front speakers produced very well in the high-frequency area, but failed when it came to mid range sound. The subwoofer that comes with this kit is top notch in my opinion. The subwoofer maybe the best part of this system, and it out performs similar subwoofers in its price range

I bought these as a Christmas present for my husband who is big on music and immersion in movies/games. He has had NOTHING but good things to say. Some notes: you can use bluetooth to listen to music on it, and also plug multiple things in at once then switch between them. It has multiple settings and gets nice and loud. Also the subwoofer is pretty good, it is powered separately, which my husband prefers since it has more power.

If you're looking for surround sound or just a crisp sound for movies and music, look no more! We've had this system for 6 months now and it's the best purchase we've made at Best buy! You can't go wrong with Yamaha. We have 2 speakers around our couch and set up the mini sound bar and 2 other speakers on the wall with our TV. The subwoofer is below our TV too (which is AMAZING) The sound is awesome, watching a movie we pick up sounds like never before. Sometimes we can't tell the difference between a noise outside or the show. If you want that theatre vibe, get this. You won't be disappointed!

I was a little skeptical of the home theater in a box, and surpirsed by the cost of the "buy as you go" systems (buying every component separately). However i would highly recommend this system. It is more than loud enough and actually if you really crank it up, the bass can rattle the windows! It was also easy to set up and came with all the wires I needed to connect everything!

You can't really go wrong here. It's a complete 5.1 home theater system that includes a nice receiver (which has one HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 input and output, so you can use it with your brand new 4K TV and future 4K equipment). The speakers are good for their size, but bear in mind that it's still an entry level set. It's easy to set up, and they provide speaker wire cable, which is nice. I would have enjoyed it if they had included an HDMI cable though...
