Makes the Apple MacBook Air look like a dinosaur

There are exactly two things you'll either rabidly love or rabidly hate with this laptop: - the keyboard - a much different typing experience compared to the relatively thick and satisfying keys on a standard MacBook Pro or MacBook Air - the touchpad - the "force click" dual-step touchpad is awesome. The haptic feedback when you align things in certain apps is very useful. However, if you go outside of Apple's suite of apps, haptic feedback isn't enabled for many 3rd party apps yet, and force click does nothing in Chrome, whereas in Safari it opens up a definition window (or whatever other context sensitive stuff you set). The laptop is overwhelmingly light. The MacBook Air 11" is a good 2lbs heavier with a cover, and feels heftier. Because I use AirDrop and Bluetooth extensively, I don't run into any issues with the lack of USB ports... the adapter is obnoxious, but remember that other computer manufacturers are creating USB-C devices right now too... so your early adoption will be a little frustrating until these new USB-C devices hit the market. The USB-C to USB standard adapter is easy to acquire and doesn't run you a ton over. Combine with an Apple TV for a cord-free computing experience if an external monitor is required. Battery life is pretty good with all things enabled. You'll be able to bust out a day's work on it with no problem. The processor speed is also not an issue; I run the Adobe Creative suite on it regularly. Don't expect to be able to have the whole suite open at once, but standalone Photoshop or standalone Illustrator run just fine and pretty quickly. A MacBook Pro is your best bet if you're doing heavy rendering with multiple apps at the same time, but you CAN ABSOLUTELY RUN THE ADOBE SUITE on a MacBook.

Everything about this MacBook is perfect, except for the need of multiple adapters to make the USB-C port functional beyond fast charging. It's more portable than most tablets, has Apple'renowned solid unibody build, is FAST, doesn't crash, lasts throughout a full without the need for a charge, and the current selling price of $999 is practically a steal. I brought the gold finish 256GB model and couldn't be happier. The space gray model is also a unique beauty among current generation laptops. However, I love how my MacBook stands out among the crowd of other Mac users at the workplace, and this is one tech buy I'm not looking forward to upgrading by any means for some years to come.

Have been wanting to replace a 2009 Mac Book for some time now. When these were released there was no doubt that this would be the product to do so. Keyboard is unreal. The feel is phenomenal and easy to use. the track pad has force touch which opens a whole new dimension for commands. Battery life is good as well and the device does not get hot sitting on your lap. Only down side is having to pay another $70-$100 (depending on what you get) for a USB C adapter so you can have regular USB usage and/or charging at the same time.

I have been in the market for a thin, small, lightweight laptop - the new Macbook fits the bill! It weights 2 lbs, 12" screen with amazing resolution, great- full sized keyboard, and is extremely portable (just a little larger than a full sized iPad). The battery life was the most important for me as I am constantly on airplanes or in airports where power outlets are few and far between. So far, the battery has lasted me an average of 7-8.5 hrs. Don't let the lack of optical drive, or inputs for USB or anything other than a power outlet fool you, ask yourself - how often do you use that? And is it absolutely necessary today with "cloud drives" and being able to sync and download everything, or transfer via USB. I have had this now for a few months, use it for college classes, and work, and have yet to feel the need for an external optical drive, or even a flash drive. I highly recommend this product!

This laptop is faster than I thought. And it has perfect screen and portability. Testing with iMovie, this MacBook is only 20 percent slower than my 2015 MacBook Pro (13 inch).

This is the macbook that I've always wanted. Most people don't like it due to core M instead of the i series intel processor. However, it ran quite fast after upgrading to El Capitian. So far everything is snappy and I actually got approx 10 hour of battery life for what I do most office, watching movies in Quicktime and occasional programming in Visual Studio Code and Xcode 7. The weight is very nice and the display set at 1440 x 900 isn't too small and perfect for the 12 inch screen size. Only thing is I wish it has at least one regular sized USB port instead of just the USB-C which I have to carry an adapter for when using all my current USB accessories.

The best way I can describe my general impression of the new MacBook is to say it is a very intimate and comfortable portable computer. It just feels good. It's so easy to use, just pick it up and get to work. It's weight makes it very easy to use and it's build quality inspires confidence. The retina display is awesome! It's well built, light weight, and powerful. The system performs very well considering it is an M processor. I have had no problems running any of my applications, MS Office, web, and email. The keyboard is very stable and is quite comfortable to use. I know some people have complained about the keyboard, but I have had no problems. If I had to pick on something, it would be battery life. Battery life is not bad, it's just that I expected more considering the energy saving features. The MacBook Air really sets the standard on battery life and I had hoped this would at least match the Air. Overall, an excellent system. I added it to my Mac OS ecosystem, I didn't use it to replace anything and I love it! I highly recommend this system!

I held off buying the 2015 version for a year because I was concerned about the size (12 inches almost seeming too small for a laptop), the new keyboard, a single port, and the capabilities of the Core M processor as opposed to an i5 that comes standard in the MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros. So, this is a review written by someone who's owned, multiple PC's, a 2015 13" MacBook Air, and a 2015 13" MacBook Pro. First of all, I'll address the keyboard. I had tapped on it in the Apple store a few times and wasn't exactly impressed. Coming from the phenomenal keyboards of the MacBook Air & Pro, it seemed to different. However, after using it for the last few days, I have to say it feels amazing to type on. While you don't get the travel that you do in a MacBook Air or Pro, you do get a satisfying *click* from each keystroke. Second is the trackpad. If you've used the 2015 MacBook Pro, you know that the Force Touch trackpads keep the incredible accuracy and satisfyingly smooth glass finish of older MacBooks, but with a much improved clicking mechanism that allows you to "click" anywhere on the trackpad easily. The MacBook continues that awesome tradition. Third is the screen. Like the new MBP's, this computer has the Retina screen which is gorgeous to look at. It's plenty bright, and the thin bezels really make it feel like the screen is larger than it is. Fourth is the processors. I'd heard that the 2015 Core M's were a little weak, but the 2016 model I purchased (256GB / Core M3 configuration) performs almost as good as my 2015 MBP with a Core i5 processor. I've opened programs such as PhotoShop, iTunes, Word and others with little to no lag, and I'm able to open 10 tabs easily with active webpages. Fifth is the battery life. I'd been concerned about the 2015 models because they only had 9 hours of battery life, but the 2016 versions have bumped that up to a solid 10, and so far I've been able to achieve that number while web-surfing with about 70% screen brightness which is about perfect for indoor usage. Sixth is the single port. I expected this to be a turn off, but the truth is I've barely noticed it. I did purchase a dongle which would allow me to plug a USB 3.0 into the computer, but in 2016 I rarely need to do anything like that with my ultraportable laptop like this one. Most peripherals like printers, mice, iPhones, etc...can connect via blue-tooth or other wireless means, so Apple was actually kind of smart in setting it up this way. Would an extra port be nice? Sure. But it wasn't a deal breaker for me. Summary: So, if it isn't clear by now, I love this laptop. But, you need to know what it IS useful for and what it ISN'T useful for. This, in my opinion, is a great secondary laptop. I use it as a mobile platform to avoid lugging around my much heavier MacBook Pro. It doesn't have multiple ports, it doesn't have a super-strong processor, and it isn't going to suit your needs if you're a power user. But if all you're looking for is something to be ultra-mobile and perform almost as good as a regular laptop, then it is perfect. I use it mostly in class to take notes on, surf the web, type papers, do a little light-editing of photos, listen to music, and things like that. If that's what you're looking for, and you can afford the price, then I say it is very worth it. P.S.- the speakers are phenomenal. Hands down the best in the Apple laptop lineup.

I have owned numerous laptops including many Apple, Dell, Toshiba, IBM's, etc. I have been a Mac user since 1984 though I've used many PCs along the way. I'm an engineer / tech professional, professor by trade. I purchased this laptop as a replacement for my 4 year old MacBook Pro, which I take with me to teach classes and do other work such as web development, programming, grading, etc. I didn't have any high-end video / gaming requirements, though I liked the retina display present on this unit. I was very concerned about the single USB-C port and thought that might be a deal-breaker. However, it's really not that different from an iPad that has a single lightning port and an audio port and you quickly get used to it. Apple has added interesting wireless sharing features to iOS and OS X such as AirDrop and Handoff, and I can now see why they did this. I really liked the fact that you can use the USB-C port to charge the laptop. If you buy this laptop, pickup a USB-C to lightning and USB-C to USB adapter / cable. They are now showing up everywhere online. USB-C looks like a smart move for Apple and probably will start showing up in other devices. I do miss the Magsafe connector on the cord, though I don't keep it plugged in very much when using it so it hasn't been a problem. I'd expect some users to trip over the cord, though, and pull the laptop off a table. Maybe Apple will create a Magsafe to USB-C adaptor. The battery life is excellent (about 7-8 hours), which is much better than the laptop it replaces. Performance is very good too, which surprised me, since the processor and the clock speed are pretty low-end. The 256GB SSD storage and 8GB RAM really make a difference. I am running Parallels with Windows 7 on it and the performance is very satisfactory. I picked up the gold colored unit, since that was all that was in stock. I like the color, which looks almost bronze. The keyboard takes some getting used to and feels very flat. Use it a week to get used to it. The force touch touch-pad is nice but not yet needed. It's interesting how Apple is really not using a click mechanism for the trackpad and applies a tactic engine click to the pad, similar to the Apple Watch. (Yes - I have an Apple Watch, which replaced my Pebble watch, but that's another story). Overall, the unit is CRAZY light and feels a lot like holding an iPad Air. This laptop is probably best suited for very mobile users who do their high-end work at a desktop. (I have a iMac and a few Dell PCs for that). Improvements I'd expect to see in the future would be the addition of a second USB-C port and a slightly faster processor. It's amazing to compare this Macbook to the Black 12" Macbook that I bought for the EXACT same price in 2007. That old Macbook weighed about 5 pounds and had 2GB RAM and a 160GB hard disk. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook for the comparison. If you are looking for a VERY light weight laptop this may be a good option. If you are a student or teacher be sure to take advantage of the education discount, which is currently $100 through Best Buy.

This laptop feels like it could easily replace my iPad, and do as much, if not more. The design is unmatched, battery life excellent, and new keyboard and trackpad state-of-the-art. The only drawback is the single usb-c port, which hasn't been an issue yet, but I do see it hampering productivity. With the number of devices that require charging increasing, a single port might be insufficient. Otherwise, it is simply excellent.

I love the design, weight, color, retina display and the keyboard. However, if FaceTime is crucial to you, look into another laptop- such as air. The camera works fine under the sun. However, if you wear a white shirt and have a dim light in your room, you will look seriously ill with this camera. In one moment, this laptop definitely brings me back to 2001 because of the poor quality of camera. Although Gold is a lovely and beautiful color, it tend to leave finger-print all over the laptop. As to performance, it is good for daily task.

At first I was skeptical about buying this laptop and was contemplating between the macbook pro vs macbook. I decided to go with the macbook due to portability and small size. As a student in graduate school I have many textbooks to carry around and the last thing I want to worry about is struggling hauling around a laptop. The laptop has enough memory in order to download the full microsoft office 365 features. I use this for taking my notes and absolutely love it. I can carry it in my purses/bags. The only thing to be aware of is it's size. I don't place it in my backpack with other heavier objects due to fear of damage or dents. Also if you place it in your bag please be mindful of dropping it on the floor. I have to do this in fear of damaging. The struggle I had when i first bought this laptop was the fact of finding a laptop case to carry around in which my best buy store near me didn't have anything for 12'. I actually had to go to walmart to buy the case. Also be aware that this doesn't have a USB/ other ports on the computer. You will need an adapter USB-C in order to plug in a USB (in which I have my notes and assignment stored on). You may read reviews that carrying extra ports in order to use different devices can be a hassle or easy to lose. I just place mine in my laptop case that I got from walmart with an additional zipper in the fort. It's very convenient for me and able to plug in the charger. Which is smaller than a macbook pro charger in my opinion. Relatable size to the iPad charger. Sound is amazing on this. I have a bluetooth speaker and the sound quality on this laptop tops it off really well. Also over time you may experience under the laptop (under speakers) it can get hot, but doesn't affect my performance of the laptop nor any warning messages yet. The gold color is so pretty and I often get compliments when taking this laptop around. So if you are a student who isn't into technical programs for you career I would definitely suggest. Plus the screen is much more bigger than the Macbook air.

Okay, so at first I absolutely loved this laptop - but after some research it's hard to say what Apple was thinking with the new Macbook. If the Macbook Air had a retina display, I'd be all over it. The Air model with the same storage has a better processor, longer battery life , two USB ports, a mag-safe power cord, and a thunderbolt port as well as an SD card reader. The Macbook has the new industry standard USBC port - BUT ONLY ONE! What the heck, only one port and you need a dongle to use a normal USB, SD reader, or HDMI!? The charger also runs out of that same port so you can't use a USB and charge at the same time unless you buy an apple adapter ($80). However, the macbook has a retina display and new styling that makes the Macbook Air look like a dinosaur. The new Macbook is not for everyone, but I chose it for the Retina display and style since I'll just be using it for browsing, notes, and mainstream things. Most people would choose the battery life and ports of the Air though. Let the debate begin.

At first I was sceptical if the new MacBook will be a good investment, but using it frequently convinced me that it is worth its money. As always with Apple computers, the MacBook is well designed. The battery life is impressive - 7 to 8 hrs after a full charge, although this of course is dependent on the use. The only misgiving might the lack of additional ports, but then the MacBook is designed to be used "on the go". The eight makes it an ideal travel companion, business, leisure, or just to attend a meeting during the day.

I was on the fence to go with this redesigned MacBook. I can say after 3 weeks of ownership that I do no regret the purchase at all. The USB C is the next generation of USB so as an earlier adopter it is slightly frustrating to have to purchase adaptors to support regular USB. However the retina screen, extremely light weight (2.0 lbs), long battery life, and force touch track pad make it worth the trade off for USB C. I had purchased a surface 3 and returned it because of skipped frame issues when watching Hulu, Netflix or other streaming video. On this MacBook not even a hint of a slow down again I was afraid of the Intel Mobile processor, but no slow down here! It is also nice that it comes with 8 GB of RAM and 256 SSD as standard and not an upgrade. The screen is hands down remarkable. I had a MacBook air prior to this and extremely happy with the retina display that I have become accustom to with the iPhone and iPad. No regrets here and glad I was able to pick it up while it was on sale.

I've been using this laptop for about a month now and I am very pleased with my purchase. It definitely wasn't the cheapest machine on the market, but its portability and "fit" into the Apple ecosystem made it right for me. You get a good balance of power and portability in this machine, plus a Retina display that the MacBook Air does not have. It'll handle everyday tasks with ease, but I wouldn't go too nuts photo or video editing without expecting a bit of a slowdown. It will still get the job done, but it won't be as quick as if you were working on a MacBook Pro or similarly powerful machine. All in all, for the everyday user, it's plenty of machine. If my old laptop wasn't in need of replacement, I would have probably waited until second generation for the price to (hopefully) come down, but if you're looking for an everyday Mac, this is right for you. Just remember, there's only one port so stock up on adapters! But honestly, I haven't even needed them yet.

I had to get accustomed to the keyboard and the mouse pad. I also miss my bigscreen laptop. The screen on the MacBook is clear and vivid, just kind of small. It did link immediately to my printer. Not fond of the preloaded word program. It works, but not as simple as normal Microsoft Word on usual laptop. The processor is fast, but nothing to scream over. My Dell desktop All in one is just as fast. I had to download Google chrome in order to do my homework, because it wouldn't allow me to use Safari to get into the school website. Light and sleek design makes it easy for travel. Does not have USB port so you have to buy another device to transfer from external hard drive or etc. More money gimmick, that I'm not fond of. This is my second Apple device, I have an Ipad tablet and this laptop doesn't do much more. Plus this laptop is not touchscreen. Its okay, but not my favorite laptop. One good feature is the laptop does not require to be charged daily. I charge it every 2 days or so. Great for travel, not an everyday type of laptop for real work.

As always, apple continues to outperform. The new Macbook is faster, smaller and lighter than even the Macbook air. There is no need for a fan because of minimal power consumption; it makes no noise and the battery lasts for days under normal use. Best buy delivered the product to my door three days after ordering on a Sunday. That was faster than even Apple could get the product to a store for pickup.

Definitely much controversy around this latest Apple product since it had a single, solitary new USB Type-C port, runs just a light duty Core-M processor, and has a brand-new low profile keyboard, but for my usage as a portable non-workhorse laptop with a superb Retina screen, and more than long enough battery so a single combo charging, USB C port isn't a hinderance - well, it's been the perfect little laptop. I use Macs regularly with 15" and 13" MBPs being the most frequently used, but for home and portable usage, the SSD speed easily makes up for slower processors for all but the most medium to high intensity tasks. Normal browsing and streaming video work w/o a hitch and I'm still amazed by the speaker/sound quality. So for me, having a single port is no big deal at all on an ultra-portable computer, the keyboard is actually a joy to use since as per many other reviews, if you are a decent typist, you'll actually improve on accuracy and speed with less key travel, and the CPU is perfectly fine.
