The best product I bought in 2011

    Posted .

I would have bought two if I have done a research. In my bedroom I wasted money, time, drywall that I could have saved all with the apple TV. When about to mount the TV in the living room I research a bit more and decided to try the apple TV, the best choice.... I love it! I like that can play the images on my computer as screen-saver... just a detail comparing with all you can do!

    Don't listen to negative reviews

    Posted .

There were a few negative reviews which did not get many facts correct. First, the price of renting an HD movie is $3.99, and HD TV show is $.99. You have 30 days to begin watching the rental, and once you start watching, you have 24 hours to finish watching. One reviewer was upset because Netflix does not have many new release movies for instant streaming...how is that Apple TV's fault? Netflix has many TV shows and many great movies for instant streaming in HD. Another reviewer talks about the 1st gen apple tv with the hard drive built in, and how you can't buy and own on the new Apple TV. Well, you can buy the movie or season or TV show on your PC or Mac in Itunes and own it, and it will wirelessly stream from your computer to Apple TV in HD. Also, the airplay feature from the IPad is awesome. Airplay is the ability to be watching something on your IPad or IPhone and tap the airplay button, and the video will now be playing on your TV through the Apple TV streaming. This product is small enough to bring with you on the road as long as a WIFI connection is available. It is also small enough to go from room to room if you have extra HDMI cables. This product is fantastic , it was effortless with the hookup and the installation, within minutes I was on Netflix and streaming my movie collection from my computer to the device. I use Itunes gift cards as a pre pay credit card style with renting movies and shows in HD. Certain movies you will want to own obviously, but some you may not want to spend $30 bucks for the blu ray disc when you can rent it at $3.99.

Great for Apple lovers. You probably already know.

    Posted .

Who it is good for: -People with huge itunes library- Put itunes stuff in there and play from your big screen or speaker system (that has optical audio) -Apple lovers- If you love Apple stuff and have a ton of their products you will want this... but if thats a case you probably already have it. But if you don't, it works great with the newer iPhones iPads and Macs. With these you can stream music, movies, and pictures wireless while being able to multitask while it's going on... Listen to a podcast or send a movie over for the kids while still checking your email, and with the iPads and iPhones you can mirror exactly what is on the screen. (warning: older iphones such as the 3Gs and the ipod touches will only send music and pictures. No movies.) -Business users (with iPads and iPhones)- making a presentation? have a screen with hdmi input? Impress with the wireless mirroring. Who its not good for: -People who just want to watch movies or netflix- Do yourself a favor and buy a Roku or a Sony smart set-top box instead. Both are cheaper and stream in 1080p instead of 720, and both have more options- like Pandora and Hulu. -Android and newer windows users- Again buy something like the Sony or a higher in Blu-ray Player for the above reasons, and since most android phones, tablets, and nicer windows laptops have DLNA certification so you can stream the same way with those devices. *Only power cord and remote in box. So remember to pick up that HDMI or Optical Audio... Remember only 720, so nothing to expensive.

    Great for what it does

    Posted .

The apple tv is an inexpensive media extender and rental box for your TV. You can easily share your entire iTunes library (purchased music and movies), home movies (as long as you render them in a format compatible with the Apple TV - many video editors have a profile for it or for the iPad, which also works fine), and pictures with it for display on your TV. In addition, the unit is very small with an integrated power supply, so it is very portable or can be easily tucked away around a TV in a bedroom. You can also rent movies and TV shows as well as use it for watching Netflix, youtube, and a few other internet based services. The airplay feature is interesting, however it requires a pretty solid wireless connection to get it to stream reliably from an iPod touch or an iPad.

Best way to spend 99 dollars...

    Posted .

If you are looking for a way to watch your videos, look at photos or listen to your music library in the living room or bedroom? Then Apple TV is your unit. You simply plug the hdmi cable into your hdmi port on your TV, turn your iTunes on on your PC or Mac. If you have wireless internet you log in, if it it wired then plug that in and your are ready to go! If you miss an episode of Desperate Housewives or other hit show you can rent to episode for as little as 99 cents (in HD!) This little device had my family in awe at thanksgiving. They knew I had been going through my VHS to get them into the PC, but they didn't realize I'd be able to access them 'on demand' right from the living room. Highly-Highly recommended!

    Absolutely Fantastic Product

    Posted .

This is my first purchase of an Apple product and I'm thrilled. I was thinking of buying a new DVD player with WI-FI built in so I could access Netflix and other things. I originally thought that you had to have Apple hardware to use Apple TV. Did research and found that was not the case. I decided to buy the box for $100 and try it. I opened the box and about 5 min. later I was up and running. As long as you have high-speed internet and a wireless router (or if wired.... an ethernet cable). Your good to go. I connected an HDMI cable from the box to my flatscreen TV, plugged it in. Entered my router info. and I was up and running. Logged into my Netflix account and voila! I then set up sharing on my itunes music collection (no I don't have an IPOD..... Yet). I have a 45K song collection which I converted to Itunes since it's very easy to manage. Now I can stream music from my PC (yes a windows 7 PC) to my TV. It's really nice and shows the Album artwork on the screen. Great product for a great price. Box is only 3.75" square and not quite an inch high.

All things should work this well

    Posted .

I primarily got this so I could stream Netflix to my HDTV. After researching this device and the Roku, I went with the Apple TV. Here's why I am in love with Apple TV: 1. Installation. It literally took me less than 10 minutes to hook the thing up. Hook it to your TV, plug in the power cord and turn it on. It'll find all available wireless networks in range, letting you select yours. Key in your network password, and...well...that's pretty much it. 2. Netflix interface. I was afraid that I was going to have to deal with multiple programs to run on the TV: one for itunes, another for netflix. But no! It's all together in a clean, easy-to-use interface that merges netflix, itunes, youtube and available radio stations all into one simple set of screens. And scanning through netflix is a breeze. 3. Speed. I tried my first full-length movie to see response time. It took about 20 seconds or so after hitting "Play" before the movie started. I think there was maybe 2 spots during the movie when more of it had to be downloaded, and these delays were maybe 10 seconds tops. Except for these two very minor burps, I couldn't tell if I was streaming it live, watching it on DVD, or watching it on a cable station! 4. You DON'T need a mac to set it up. I thought that maybe I needed to own a Mac desktop or laptop to set it up, but I was wrong. All of the set-up happens via your TV and the included remote. 5. For plasma TV owners, there are built-in screen savers to use if you are using your Apple TV for, say, listening to music. Nice touch. 6. Speaking of music, there are like a gazillion fantastic radio stations you can listen to. There are a couple of things to be aware of, though: 1. The remote, though beautiful and easy to use, is way to easy to misplace. 2. My network is "n", not "g", so I have some advantage of a speedier network. 3. I also have cable, not DSL, which could also give me an advantage. 4. You'll need an HTML cable (not included) and an available HTML port on your TV to take full advantage of the unit. If you have a fast network and a decent ISP, you will love the easy set-up, ease of use, and great speed and performance of your Apple TV. Highly recommended!!!

    Great addition to any HDTV

Love my Apple TV! easy to hook up, just plug in the power cable, Hdmi to your tv go through your first time setup & you're ready to go. I have it hooked up to my 65" Panasonic plasma 1080p HDTV & the picture is awesome even at the Apple TV 2's 720p. Lots of neat apps for streaming movies, sports & music. I have tons of Apple products (iPhone, iPad, iPod, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, MacBook Air, Mac desktop, airport express, etc) AirPlay & computer home sharing is great, as with Apple everything just works seamlessly together as it's intended to. I can play movies or content from these devices to the Apple TV & have it displayed on my tv. I'd definitely buy another if it were still available & would recommend it to friends & family! The only downside is the remote (directional arrows) is kind of clunky to use when trying to type something with the online virtual keyboard. I'd definitely recommend getting the Apple remote app for your iPhone, iPod or iPad to have touch screen swiping of the directional arrows if you don't plan on buying a Bluetooth keyboard. Other than that, Apple TV 2 is awesome.

    Amazingly Simple

    Posted .

I bought the Apple TV about a month ago, and had it set up within a few minutes. The connection to the TV and stereo were simple. Once connected to the internet it was easy to stream Netflix as well as YouTube. I had some issues with the iTunes sharing to start with, but that was solved with the latest version of iTunes. Once that was done, I was able to start playing music throughout the house with a flick of my iPhone! Really great stuff. I'm not going to be a renter from their store - I prefer to purchase/keep instead. Apple also needs to increase the source material for this. I know it takes time to get different network providers to sign up, but they should push it aggressively. It's a really simple product for everything it does. Well worth the $99

The Best Streaming Player Out There

    Posted .

I bought a ROKU and liked it. I wanted another streaming player for our bedroom to watch Netflix. I found the Apple TV on sale at Best Buy for $89.00 so I bought it. Just about the best $89 I have ever spent. I can so easily purchase TV shows that I like from USA Network and The HUB for 1.99 each (in Standard Def). I have a slow DSL line where I live, so I download in SD, and I can hardly tell the difference from HD. The picture is amazing and the sound is incredible. Netflix loads on Apple TV in about 30 seconds and rarely ever rebuffers, and has a very good picture. Way better than the ROKU, which is blurry. Tonight, Netflix made an upgrade to the Apple TV interface, and they have a Just For Kids selection that is amazing. So for $89 out of pocket, 7.99 per month for Netflix, and about $4-6 per week for a few shows we purchase, I am enjoining better and more convenient TV than I had with Sat, which cost us nearly $100 per month.

    Simply put, it just works

    Posted .

Recently my 400cd Sony changer started acting up. I have been carrying my laptop into the family room to connect to the stereo to listen to music, which was getting pretty old. I started looking for ways to easily stream from iTunes on the laptop to the stereo in another room. Read tons of review on tons of products, was almost ready to buy the Logitech Squeezebox Duet but the price and the not so great review made me pause. I came across the Apple Airport Express and this seemed to fit the bill, but then I dug further and found Apple TV. Have to say, it was NOT complicated to set up. Hooked right up to the wireless with no fuss. Ten minutes after removing it from the box I was streaming iTunes from the laptop and surfing Netflix. It's just that simple. Picture quality is better on Netflix than on he Wii, and the music sounds so much better than through the headphone plug on the laptop. Viewing all of my photos on the TV screen was an added bonus. So today I found that I can use my learning remote and it all ties together without using the remote that comes with it. I bought this thinking I would probably return it. No way now. Sure, I wish I could play Pandora or Slacker on it but I knew that when I bought it (it does have a large list of internet radio stations). Overall, tt does everything I need and has the ability to be driven from an iTouch, iPad, or iPhone so you can stream content from those devices as well (including Pandora or Slacker). Your mileage may vary, but if you are looking for a simple way to stream your iTunes over your home network and view it all and operate it on your TV screen this is simple and cost effective. Problem solved.

    Fantastic Product

    Posted .

I preorded my Apple TV as soon as it was released and soon after purchased another. Not only has this product kept me from paying for $90 a month for cable TV, but works amazingly with my iPhone 4 (and my roomate's two iPhone 3GS) and soon to be our two iPad 2's. In my video, I covered the features of the product and showed the unboxing. There are more details there. In general, the only thing I dislike about the Apple TV is its lack of support for Hulu Plus. However, the ability to rent and stream movies instantly has been helpful time and time again.

no one can out do apple in product design

i love the apple tv. it's so easy to use, allows me to purchase and watch my favorite tv shows the day after they are aired on television in a matter of seconds, and wirelessly syncs my laptop to my tv so i can be working on a paper upstairs and my boyfriend can still watch his favorite shows from my library downstairs with the apple tv. needless to say it's awesome! and if you are like me and have the ipad and iphone (i love apple products), airplay allows you to sync with apple tv instantly and stream the music or video through your tv with your portable device. i use my apple tv every day, and i would recommend it to every person i meet. i had the first generation model as well, so i am very familiar with the product; the newer model is smaller and is compatible with airplay.

It is very good device for entertainment

    Posted .

Though I like and own many Apple products, I was very reluctant to buy Apple TV as it has many restrictions for playing local contents compared to other streaming devices available in the market such as Roku. Finally I decided to give a try when Apple TV price dropped during Black Friday weekend sale. It is worthy for the money and you can expect the same quality you expect from any other Apple device. I use this device to stream from Netflix and Airplay my other devices wirelessly to TV. I am yet to explore other options such as renting contents from iTunes, which I won't probably :) My only wish that if it allow to add URLs for internet radio rather than streaming via iTunes which needs the computer to be online all the time and I also wish it had an output capacity for 1080p along with Amazon Prime video streaming... well ... :P

Simple -- what it does, it does well

    Posted .

I'm heavily into music, have multiple systems throughout my house, for the patio, etc. Wanted to get into the world of streaming for a while, to tie it all togeher a bit, but couldn't decide which way to go with it, read MANY reviews and blogs. When I got a Denon 3311 AVR with Airplay for the living room, decided to give the Apple/itunes option a go, figured a much cheaper trial run than Sonos, for example. So I got two Apple TVs, one for the basement and one for the master bedroom, where I'm using older AVRs -- have the ATVs wired via Ethernet, use iPod touch and iPhone as controllers. Airplay works great, better and easier than I expected, actually. I use Apple Lossless music files, and that does make a difference. An unexpected side benefit, for me, is with Netflix. It's awesome being able to get 5.1 surround when streaming an HD movie. And the picture is actually a bit better than even via my Oppo 93 BluRay player. One note: you may need to upgrade your router to make this work seamlessly -- i.e., don't expect a cheapo router to be able to handle the heavier bandwidth, especially if other users are competing simultaneously. For the price, this is one of the best add-ons that I've ever bought for my AV systems. While it might be nice to have an "all-in-one" player for music (of course, Apple restricts file types!), I couldn't justify the price of poker for Sonos when I wasn't really sure how I wanted to go with this. For now, being able to stream high-quality music and HD 5.1 Netflix all around the house, using i-devices that are in my pocket anyway, made this a great bang-for-the-buck purchase.

    Amazing little box!

    Posted .

This little black box is amazing! I have an iPad 2, and to watch TV shows or movies from iTunes, I was having to load them on the iPad, then hook the iPad to the TV to watch. Now, my entire iTunes library, including music, movies, TV shows, etc. all effortlessly stream from my PC through my Apple TV! Plus you can browse movies and TV shows on iTunes right on your TV. Setup was relatively easy. The only hiccup I had was my network has MAC address filtering. I was unable to obtain the MAC address of the Apple TV unit when first getting it on my network. So I had to go into my wireless router settings and disable MAC filtering. The Apple TV then connected right away. Once connected, I was able to go into the network settings of the Apple TV and obtain the MAC address, then plug that into my wireless router settings and all was good. Using air play with my iPhone & iPad is awesome. Viewing photos and videos right on the TV over the wireless network is so cool! Photos display quickly, but I did find that movies in my photo library seemed to take quite a long time to buffer before they would display on the TV. I think this to be a bit odd because you can stream YouTube from the iPad to the Apple TV quite quickly. I guess movie files on the iPad or iPhone are much larger in size which takes longer? Overall, I'm very satisfied with this product. $100 is a great price to pay for what this product lets me now do. And with iOS5 right around the corner, airplay will only get better!

    Surprising and simply great

Though my wife and I have iPhones we are not the drooling, fanboy Apple lovers so many come across as. However, this product is truly fantastic. I used to use a PS3 for streaming media from different computers/internet sources...this not only simplifies the process it does everything better, faster and easier. Netflix is huge on Apple TV, for $7 a month? Awesome, there is always something to watch. As for streaming, compared to my PS3, Apple TV is smooth, fast and error-free across the home network from various PC's. For the price I can't recommend this enough.

Excellent once unlocked to full potential

    Posted .

This has to be the best media center available, period. However, out of the box it needs some tweaking. A very simple "jailbreak" procedure is required to unlock this devices FULL potential. Once jailbroken, XBMC can be installed which is an open source media center software that will play back ANY media format. All those SUPER HIGH QUALITY bluray MKV files that are out there can be played flawlessly in full high definition once XBMC is installed. Otherwise, you are limited to the MP4 file format restrictions of iTunes. The hardware is fully capable of playing anything you throw at it, it just needs to have a minor software addition to unlock this truly amazing device. Form factor is perfect. Super small, energy efficient, silent. Best $100 i've spent in a LONG time.

    Looks great for 720p!

    Posted .

Was hesitant to purchase as the video playback is limited to 720p. I'm used to watching Directv ppview movies in 1080p, so my expectations were low...but for $89.00 on sale, it was worth a try. Happy to say that playback looks great on my 55" Samsung. I can tell the difference, but 'barely.' 9 out of 10 people would not be able to tell the difference (even is shown side by side). SUPER easy hookup/setup (took 3 minutes), great user interface, and my internet is high speed, but not the fastest and my first HD movie rental took only 45 seconds to load. Just another great product from Apple. Completely satisfied.

Excellent...as long as you use iTunes.

    Posted .

First I should state that I use iTunes for handling my movies and music needs, I rip a movie or movie and place it in there...simple as that. I use the Apple TV two different ways, first, the regular way. As a way to stream my media from a Mac to the TV it does this job fantastic, I've never experienced any problems and in typical Apple fashion setup was simple. Not really much to review here, it either streams good or it doesn't. Secondly I use it in a way that I stumbled upon, I am a photographer and when I'm working I like to have a stream of photos I've taken displayed on a monitor or TV...I used to have a separate Mac and monitor setup for this then I thought why not use the Apple TV for it...dual use and dead simple. Bottom line it is an easy way to enjoy your iTunes library in other room(s) without needing a separate HTPC setup. In fact, the only negative thing that I can say about it is that the on-screen information entry screen is tedious...BUT...that said, the iOS remote application will allow you to input via a keyboard when you enter a search or account entry screen.
