Home camera security system got easier to install

Quick Summary:
The Arlo Essential series home security camera just made installing home security system much more easier. It no longer requires a home base like their other series cameras but relays on cloud recording and services. Although it does have some drawbacks such as latency and connectivity issues his is easy to install, uses 2k (2560 x 1440) resolution cameras, and quick way to adding home security to any home or place with WIFI.
In the box:
4 - Essential Arlo 2K outdoor cameras
Arlo protect yard sign
Setup:
Setting up the cameras was pretty simple, instructions said to fully charge each of the cameras before adding them to the system. To add them simply follow instruction in the phone app and press the pair button on top of each camera. The app will walk you through the entire setup. Again it was pretty simple just had to repeat it 4 times. My father (in his 60's) was able to set up the camera himself with simple instructions from me, so this should give you an idea of how easy it was.
Product specs:
Cameras are 2K resolution 2560 x 1440 with 130 degree field of view. Arlo rates them to work in -5 degree weather so probably not recommended for areas where it gets colder. Night vision isn't the best on these cameras, when putting them in view of white backgrounds, the IR light somewhat blinds the cameras. I also noticed that the cameras were very delayed roughly 15 seconds and occasionally had issues with connectivity. Some of that had to do with the WIFI router I was using but noticed this on other WIFI routers as well. I would give this a better score if arlo was able to fix this issue with consistent connectivity.

These days more and more houses are adding cameras, not just doorbell, but security, surveillance, etc.
Arlo was well ahead of the curve and one of the first in this space, having carved out a nice niche for themselves; reasonably priced, high quality, wired and wireless cameras. This can also be a gateway into their entire ecosystem of security, floodlights, monitoring, etc.
I already own an Arlo Ultra 2 system, hub, charging station package. In addition to this single essentials outdoor cam, I purchased some used, which I do not recommend under any circumstance, as they will be paperweights, and requires an act of Congress to move from another account to yours. I worked with level 2 support more than a week before essentially giving up and throwing in the towel, but that’s is my unique situation.
The essential outdoor wireless camera is well build, and 2k video surprisingly high quality, and closer to Ultra 2 4k than one might imagine.
Something I did not realize is the essential line of Arlo cameras differs considerable internally, using non-removable usb-c to charge instead of block batteries in a fast charger.
No one wants to constantly climb ladders every couple of months to remove camera , bring inside, charge, then re-mount, so I picked up an inexpensive solar panel charger. Time will tell if it’s truly set-it-and-forget-it, so far so good.
The Arlo app is well-written, seemingly secure, and functional. I have another camera system with more bells and whistles, but at higher price, and without the convenience of as many outdoor camera choices.
The Arlo system I can say with certainty for outdoor usage greatly exceeds yet another competing security camera brand whose batteries won’t hold a charge for more than a week. Arlo, albeit only 2.4 GHz seems to maintain much better signal consistency, and is an overall more robust solution.
Honestly though, I don’t see how a single camera will get most users the results they seek, and would suggest a better use would be to look at one of their kits that includes the Arlo smart hub, as well as charging station, and often sold at a healthy discount when bundled.
One caveat, while assembling the holster and latch I snapped it together before mounting, oops, now I risk breaking it , but thsts my fault for tinkering.
Pros
+ form factor
+ 2k image quality
+ ease of installation
+ 130 degree viewpoint
+ nearly plug-and-play
+ USB-C battery charging
+ robust application options
Cons
-best with monthly sub
-mounting options limited
-limited customer support
-dismount feels it will break
-smart detection only w cloud svc
Conclusion
This 2nd generation Arlo essential does what it’s supposed to, but instead of piecing together individual units, I recommend buyers look at the most cost economical bundles, that include the smart hub (for Apple HomeKit video integration ), along with a charger, longer battery life, and multiple cameras of higher resolution, 5s2k or Ultra 2 4k.
Recommendation : do not buy, look at bundle instead

I already have an Arlo system with older style cameras and so I was looking for newer cameras to add to our existing system.
These cameras pair perfectly with our existing Arlo station. Installation or adding to the Arlo app was as easy as holding down the bottom at the top and following the screen prompts on your cell phone.
Each camera needed to be fully charged which took a while since there is only one charging cord but it’s a common cord so we had others that we used for other electronics.
So at this point you are only limited by your wall outlets.
Charging takes an hour or two. After fully charged and connected to you app it’s mounting time.
Since there are four we are able to capture all four corners of our home. The previous cameras have a magnetic attachment but these don’t.
You actually have to drill two screws into the wall or fence in our case, add the plastic attachment and the screw the other attachments to the camera and connect everything.
I prefer the magnetic connection. The 2k video quality is good.

I had some Arlo cameras several years ago and they were my first wireless cameras. I really enjoyed them, but after getting a wired camera system, I realized how much I was missing. Wireless cameras are easy to install and can be placed nearly anywhere. I literally put one on my mailbox and one on a tree. Not running 100ft of ethernet cable to do something like that. So, there are certain advantages to wireless over wired as well. One issue with wireless is that you are always going to miss a few seconds of the situation as it triggers motion, then it starts recording. Also you are going to have to recharge them at some point.
My previous Arlo cameras were simple to open and replace, so you could have a spare battery already charged and ready. However, these Arlo Essential cameras are sealed, so you have to remove the whole camera. So, this means if you put your camera in a place that requires a little climbing, you are going to have to climb up there from time to time. This also means you have to make sure the position of the camera is where you want it, every time you set it back in place. Of course, that amount of time is dependent on the activity of the area and how you use the camera. Having the LED enabled for night time and selecting better video over power will make it vary a lot. Looking at about a few weeks to a couple months worth of variation.
As mentioned above, the other issue with wireless is the few seconds that you are likely to miss. For instance, a car drives by and by the time the camera starts recording, all you see is the reflection of light from their tail lights. For the most part, for the average speed of a person or animal, you will still see them, provided your camera position is decent. But, the recording also goes the other way around where it doesn’t record long enough. For instance, someone walks into frame and starts walking away from the camera, you might get 11 seconds of video but it was the 15th second that they threw a rock through your window.
The image/video quality is decent. You can make out most major details, but not going to see the fine details, like plat numbers, unless you are right up on the vehicle. However, on a wet day the camera can be pretty much useless. The funny thing is, it still knows when there is an animal or person, but when you look at the footage you would be lucky to see them yourself. See the image below. Then you get this occasional purple video when it seems confused on whether it is in night IR mode or color night mode. See purple image below.
The biggest issue I have with this system, and the reason I would not recommend them, is they are pretty much useless as security cameras unless you subscribe to their monthly secure plans. I’m pretty sure back in the day you would at least get 7 days of recording if you didn’t subscribe, but as it is now, you get nothing but a notification of motion without the subscription. You can open the camera with that notification, see live video and record directly to your device at that time, but by then the situation may have already passed. So, not only are you paying for the kit up front, you have to pay the monthly plan as well if you want them to be security cameras.
The plan allows for up to 30 days of recording, smart notifications like vehicle, animal, person and additional features in the app like activity zones and customization. You can even get higher level plans that include 24/7 emergency response and if you have a security system as well, the professional monitoring with video verification. With the 4 cameras, you would want to get the “Unlimited Cameras” option. But, like all subscriptions “prices are subject to change”, so you might eventually be paying even more just to use your cameras in the future.
Overall, for wireless cameras, they are not bad. Image quality is pretty decent, provided moisture does not settle on the lens and lighting is optimal. It’s just the lack of ability to record without having a monthly plan, there is no local storage to even prevent from having to be online and no ability to just swap the battery as you have to bring the whole camera in to charge it. Basically, if you want your security cameras to provide security, you have to keep the subscription going or they just become wireless webcams with motion notifications.

This Arlo Essential 1 Outdoor Security Camera is a 2K camera that captures video, still shots, and audio. The app that goes with it, that you download, is pretty awesome. It allows you to control your Arlo Essential 1 Outdoor Security Camera. The only issue that I have had thus far, is that the color on the camera at night, sometimes makes the entire picture a light pink tint. It doesn’t stay long, but it does happen. I have reset all the options, in case I changed a setting that turned it pink, and the pink remained to come on even after the reset. The best features of this camera are the ability to set zones, schedules and more. The other settings are Arm Away, Arm Home, and Standby. The picture is extremely clear, and not blurry at all. Even in the fog, it’s pretty good. I have some photos of before, during, and after the fog. The night vision even has options. You can view night vision in black and white, or in color. Another thing that is great, and an important feature, is that the camera picks up what it sees as far as a person, a vehicle, a package, or an animal. It’s a pretty good camera and I will continue to use this one, plus get more to cover our entire yard.

I recently purchased the Arlo Camera Essential Model to enhance the security of my home, and I couldn't be happier with my decision. From its easy setup to its impressive performance, this camera has exceeded my expectations in every way.
Setting up the camera was a breeze – I had it up and running in minutes. The wire-free design meant I could place it exactly where I needed it without worrying about tangled cords or complicated installation processes.
The video quality is outstanding, even in low light conditions. I'm impressed by the clarity of the footage both during the day and at night thanks to its integrated night vision feature. I feel confident knowing that I can rely on this camera to capture any activity around my property, day or night.
The motion detection capabilities are another standout feature. I appreciate the customizable alerts that notify me directly on my smartphone whenever motion is detected. Whether it's a delivery person dropping off a package or a potential intruder, I'm always informed in real-time.
The Arlo app is intuitive and user-friendly, allowing me to access live streams and recorded footage with ease. I also appreciate the option to store footage locally using the SD card slot or subscribe to Arlo's cloud storage service for added peace of mind.
Overall, the Arlo Camera Essential Model has been a game-changer for me in terms of home security. It's reliable, easy to use, and delivers exceptional performance. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade their security system."

I honestly think that I have two reviews for this Arlo Essentials four pack of 2K security cameras with yard sign package. I will start by saying that so far, in my experience, Arlo makes the best home security camera on the market, and I would highly recommend any, even before testing it out. That said, the first review is not great, but only because of the paid subscription aspect. This is the second set of Arlo cameras that I have tested out in our home. The first set had a wonderful cloud based storage system that did not require any subscription to be purchased to have an excellent array of amenities and features to use. This Essentials package is really meant for a user who wants the value and benefits of the app based plan and does not mind paying a nominal subscription based monthly fee. My review will be based on my knowledge of the plan pricing with the intent to subscribe.
The Arol Essential 4-Camera Outdoor Wireless 2K Security Camera System (2nd Generation) from Best Buy exceeded my original expectations. The package was a win for me because it offers four easy to setup 2K capture cameras, formidable USB-C charging capable batteries that do not seem to die, simple to install, and a robust app that combines to give your property a whole net of security.
The app is super friendly and customizable. With the app enabled, the user is able to access notifications, live streaming, and even audible interactions. The app allows me to access and view my cameras from anywhere, provided my cameras are adequately connected to our Wi-Fi.
The cameras come with a partial charge, but the instructions recommend fully charging for several hours prior to installation. Installation was quick and easy and can be done with minimal tool use. The clever locking system that connects the mount to the camera is well built. It looks like it will hold up against the harshness of Mother Nature quite nicely.
The 2K HDR video quality is fantastic, allowing the user to zoom in / out and around with clarity. The night vision offers the same clarity and offers a brilliant non-grainy experience. The most entertaining to use and novel integration for me is the inclusion of a siren and spotlight. I have used the spotlight as parameter lighting that I randomly turn on when I am not home to give the illusion that we are.
The range of the Wi-Fi is reasonable and provides options because of it. I mounted one of the cameras directly to a tree in my backyard that is about 250 feet from the router connection through an exterior and interior wall in our home with minimal connection issues. While setting up the app was thoroughly thought out and does allow you to visually see your camera’s connection to ensure that you will have a good enough connection for a 2K Camera.
In conclusion, the Arlo Essential 4 Camera Outdoor Wireless 2K Security Camera system is an excellent choice for protecting one's property. The combination of advanced features, user friendly design, and 2K cameras make it highly recommendable from me.

I'm extremely impressed with these cameras. They are of a really good quality video display & the field of view is great. I had some Arlo cameras that unfortunately went End of Life. I took my time picking out a new set and am glad I did. I'm very happy with this new set. These cameras are larger than my original ones - I do wish they had the bottom, instead of back, mounting style - I think that's the only thing I don't like. But they're perfect for the important things such as motion detection, range, and video quality. I'm actually glad I didn't get the XL. I am thinking the re charge time might be every 2-3 months. I took my time trying to get the sensitivity adjusted properly and for me, I think my recharge timeframe will be every 2-3 months - Which is great for me. You do have to get familiar with the new App Plan features for the cameras. The Smart detection is very nice - people, pet, motion etc. I was very pleased that I was able to get the four pack on an excellent sale. I do wish the Skins were in stock here or on the Arlo website - that's very disappointing they're not available. However, that's not a negative about the cameras. The App - I preferred the previous Apps Feed but otherwise the additional features are great. And again, that doesn't affect the quality of the cameras. I've owned and used them for over a month now.
Great buy!

I want to preface by saying my review is based on a sale price of $180. I have bought several sets of these now and they are constantly on sale around $200. At this price this is unbeatable. They have decent range from my router, good quality video, and are easy to set up. Batteries are not removable which means you have to bring the entire camera inside to charge instead of being able to have a set of backup batteries charged and ready to swap but for around $45 per camera, I can not complain. I believe there are solar charging add ons that you could add if this is outdoors in a sunny location. We use these primarily for home surveillance and as trail cameras on our homestead to monitor wildlife. If you are interested in seeing the quality both in the day and at night you can find our wildlife pictures and videos on CozyCabinAcres on Instagram and Tiktok

The Arlo Essential 2K Second Generation outdoor Camera provides a great picture, but it's biggest caveat is the mount that comes with it.
Pros:
- Clear Picture
- Quick notifications
- Settings for camera
Cons:
- installation
- Mounting hardware
After finally setting up the Essential 2K and mounting it, I was able to set it up in the Arlo App. I set my video to the best video available (2K setting), and adjusted the speaker settings, along with the activity zones (I would suggest creating an activity zone to help minimize false motion notifications and to keep your battery alive longer).
After a couple of motion tests (me walking into the activity zone I set up) I can say that I received a two second delay receiving a notification. I do have over 1gb of Internet speed. However, compared to cameras I have used in the past, receiving notifications was quick.
Again, settings for the Arlo Essential 2K Second Generation camera are robust; there are a lot of options I appreciate. One of which is adjusting the low light settings (ideal for color night vision). I would suggest adjusting the low light settings by one degree up as the picture (in my area and where I installed the camera) was "just right" (the default settings were too dark for my liking). One of my favorite features, again, is the color night vision. You can switch it back to regular night vision as well (or turn this function off). Again, it might be a better idea to leave this on depending on where you install the camera and the lighting available for the camera's field of view.
Unfortunately, the installation and mounting hardware are terrible. The first generation camera included a track ball adjustable mount. Which was easier to use and adjust your camera. However, Arlo updated their new camera mount for the second generation essential camera and it's terrible. Yes, the previous trackball system may slouch over time (and you may have to readjust it). The new system does not have a trackball. Instead, you will need to install a separate base (remember to keep that arrow pointed up) and use a phillips head screwdriver to attach the mount to the back of the camera. Again, keep the arrow pointed up (both the base and the mount need their arrows pointed up to install and connect correctly). Unfortunately, when I went to set up the camera and install it in my preferred area of need, I had to untighten the mount and attempt to swivel the mount in order to adjust. The previous trackball system was simple (turn a knob, move the camera, and tighten the knob to keep your adjustment). The new system is cumbersome because you still, somehow, need to keep the arrows pointed up and it's almost impossible to set up the camera in a preferred position to record. All I can say is, Arlo, go back to the drawing board and redesign the mounting system again because it's awful.
Ultimately, the Arlo 2K Second Generation Essential camera provides a great picture, along with several recording options and settings (in the Arlo app). However, where the camera fails is the mounting hardware. I did not think it was possible to make it worse than the last hardware, but Arlo somehow did.

Excellent quality, easy setup. This is my first set of cameras for my place. You don't realize who is around until you check the camera.
I appreciate the customization of how and when to capture action. The membership price is low and manageable, but I wouldn't want to commit to it long-term.
I purchased a solar panel (3rd party) and plugged it in because my cameras are outside, and I don't feel like plugging in an external battery, which I did at one point. I can go 9 months before reaching mid-battery life. It's a high-traffic area, especially near tourist season.

Overall pretty good, if your like me and have a one a story home and put them in easy to reach places with a small step stool then you will be fine. I have put 3 outside of my home. In a coldasack, but I will say battery life isn’t 3 months like it says. More like maybe 4 weeks. In a decently busy coldasack.other than that and having to charge them so often. Great picture quality.
