Surprisingly usable, with one significant flaw

I bought the Asus Zenfone Live L1 because I was looking for an inexpensive dual-SIM phone to use with 2 different USA GSM providers. The good: The phone is a nice compact size for me. I was concerned by the Android Go OS with the related small RAM size. (Which seems to be the maximum RAM allowed for Android Go.). The phone runs smoothly with no real lag for light duty use, with a few apps and general web browsing. Touch screen response, and screen display are both good for a budget phone. Looking through the apps I usually load from the Google Play Store, only a few non-critical ones (for me) are not available for Android Go, and there seem to be good alternatives that are Android Go compatible. I do not play games or use Social Media apps, to no opinion there. The Dual Sim technology itself is well implemented. I could assign one SIM as 2G/3G, and the other as 2G/3G/LTE (LTE preferred). This allows me to use one SIM for calls/text, and a different SIM for LTE data, with both active at the same time. (I did test for incoming call availability while loading a web page, which worked fine. I did not te4st for whether or not taking that incoming call would interrupt streaming-- and I expect it will.) You can install an uSD card in addition to the 2 SIMs. Really nice, since many Dual-SIM phones lose the uSD capability if you install 2 SIMs. The Unknown: I have read some less than favorable comments about the Go version of Google Maps. I use a different navigation program that runs fine on Android Go, so this was not a critical feature for me. If it is for you, I would advise reading reports of the Go version. The Bad: It's difficult to get information about this phone for T-Mobile compatibility. It apparently has Band 12, and the manual says both SIMs are capable of VoLTE. However, unless I'm missing something, the phone is NOT certified for T-Mobile VoLTE, so it will not work despite meeting both those requiremenets. I could place a call on a T-Mobile SIM, but the phone dropped back to 2G/3G to do so. If you use the T-Mobile network, this is a serious issue moving forward, since T-Mobile is aggressively shutting down all but VoLTE voice-- it may or may not work for you in your location. (T-Mobile data worked fine on LTE-- just no VoLTE.) There seems to be something wrong with the Android Notification Dot implementation-- I could not get it to work at all, even after going carefully through the menu settings several times. It does have a notification LED which seems to work OK. I sent a request to Asus Customer Service asking for input on the T-Mobile VoLTE issue, and the Notification Dot implementation. I did not receive a reply. Summary: I like this phone for use on the AT&T network, and for it's Dual-SIM implemenetation. I would not recommend it you use the T-Mobile network. The dual-SIM function works well.

Great Replacement for a Lost phone!

Recently I had lost an HTC Smart phone when I was grocery shopping. And I didn't expect to have to buy another phone. I was looking for an unlocked Google Pixel or Google Pixel 2 phone since it was on my wishlist. But I could only afford what was on my budget. I found that this Asus Zenfone was at that time was under $100 unlocked. So I think I got a pretty good deal, since most of the phones at BestBuy would cost as much as a laptop or desktop PC. Atleast it was the 2nd or 3rd cheapest phone I found. For my 1st time setup of this phone I did have a little trouble setting up the Sim Card. Since there were two slots, I had to make sure that I put the Sim on slot (1). Cause before that, for some reason the phone was force shutting itself. But once I followed basic instructions from the manual, it was a sigh of relief for me. After switching from 2G, 3G to 4G & updating the Asus firmware, the Asus phone was ready for use. So far, I haven't had any issues with this phone since I've only had it for almost 2 weeks since Feb. 7th. P.S. I want to inform Asus that Lycamobile Sim card is also compatible with this phone since I haven't had any issues so far! Thx Asus, you've got me as one satisfied customer! ;)

Unbelievable That This Came To Market

I don't usually have problems with phones because I don't buy anything under the$400 mark. But I was in a pinch after all of my work gear was stolen. Some reasons not to buy... Memory chokes up when playing Spotify when it's the only app running, causing the music to skip. Switching between apps causes them to restart. So whichever one you switched from will clear. Terrible if you're filling out a form and need to copy and paste a phone number, etc. Battery life is very bad, 100% to 20% in three hours of use. Battery saver does nothing. When battery hours 25% phone is almost inoperable. Keyboard is always one word behind, you have to wait for each word to print to screen before continuing to type. Crashes constantly. Android Go: what a mess. It should be written plain as day on the phone that it has this joke of an OS. GO is misnomer, they should have named the thing NoVa, and if they meant Go, they meant Go(od luck) running your small business with this piece of isht. This phone barely does anything, to the point that even using an app that is usually rewarding, fulfilling, or pleasant becomes drab, depressing and oppressive. Terrible OS, outdated hardware, benchmarks worse than an Obama phone and I can get that for free!

Painful to set up SIM, but works

I'd like to start by addressing the SIM card boot issue. The phone has an issue where it will force shut down if it connects to 4G or LTE. As the phome default connects to 4G or LTE, this means you won't even make it through set up with a SIM inserted. To fix the issue, set up the phone without the SIM card inserted. Once you can reach the home page, go to settings. Go to mobile networks and look for "Preferred Network: 2G/3G/4G". With this screen open and the device on, insert the SIM card. As soon as you can switch your network, click it and choose "2G/3G" from the menu before the phoke shuts down again. From here, the device will function as normal. This device has a decent processor, an ok camera, and good battery life. With Android GO edition, the device's 16GB of storage and 1GB RAM seems like a lot. The phone has Android 8 Go Edition and seems to get monthly security updates. If you're willing to go through the painful SIM setup process, I'd say it's a fine budget phone.

I love it, amazing phone at a great price This phone is a great budget phone, it is designed to work with Gsm and CDMA so it gives the customer more options for their cell needs. Additionally, the phone is fast and responsive so you can multitask apps easily on the phone. In addition, the phone has a great battery life that allows me to go a couple of days before I need to charge the phone. Moreover, the speakers are very loud so if your a customer like myself that loves to use speaker on your calls, instead of having to turn the volume up high like other phones; instead you can adjust the volume to your preference and still hear the voices, loud and clear. i also like the fact that the phone is not loaded with bloatware so you have more storage for your needs. This phone has the most easy way to unlock your phone with a double tap which is my favorite feature.

I spent a lot of time playing around with the display model, before purchasing this phone. Unfortunately, my phone did not perform nearly as well as the display model. Regardless of the settings, the phone would constantly power off. Then, I would have to completely reboot the phone. Additionally, the phone would never go into sleep mode...just power completely off. Several phone calls to the Asus tech support proved unsuccessful. After attempting to reboot the phone in safe mode 3x, the reps finally instructed me to return the item. Another thing that I found very strange was that the default settings and display never corresponded to display model on the floor. Ended up returning the phone and purchasing a different brand, and now I couldn't be any happier.

I bought this phone for use as a data hotspot while traveling in Europe. No issues with setting up phone or it turning off like others have said. However, it takes much longer to start up than my iPhone X. Also, the face recognition almost never works, so needing two hands to use the swipe or pattern unlock can be a pain. The worst part is the display screen. Asked about screen protector when I bought it, but was told there wasn’t one. I put the phone in my front pocket (where I’ve always put my phone). I pulled it out, and the screen is cracked all the way across. No drop, no hitting it, etc. I wouldn’t buy this again. I replaced a BLU XL phone that I couldn’t find before my trip. I’d definitely go back to the BLU. I’m afraid that this phone wouldn’t hold up to everyday use.

This phone is cheap, and it really shows. The low RAM means having more than one app open can cause problems across the phone, assuming it can handle one app running in the first place. That in combination with Android GO as a lacking OS overall the phone generally does not run well, and anyone changing from a more expensive phone to this will be disappointed by the performance overall. I will say that the phone is durable, and while not extremely reliable it works often enough for someone who doesn't rely on their phone too often. If you or someone you know need a smart phone and very rarely need the "smart" features this may be a good choice, but for anyone else give this a pass.

so first I would like to say that this is a fairly nice phone for the price, but I will warn you, it has major known issues. it likes to turn itself off for no reason all the time. there are workarounds and if you do them its not bad. the one I found was to put two sim cards in it. as long as it has two sim cards, even if one is inactive, it will work just fine. some other people on here have said that if you leave it in 3g mode that it will work with one card. best buy should warn people before they buy this phone that this problem exists.

We do ensure that all our units are properly tested before they are sent out in order to reduce/eliminate isolated issues such as this. Bought the phone on 09/04/18 and it just died! A couple of hours ago I turned it on, worked fine. Turned it on 2 hours later and no sign of life. Charged it several hours no action, not even the LED lights up to show sign of life. It's a poorly made phone, I am truly disappointed in ASUS with there phone products. I bought this phone to replace another ASUS phone I purchased on 04/26/18 (Zenfone AR) that has a display defect and no recalls have been made on that phone! So, now Asus is getting both of these phones for repairs. Never buying ASUS again.

Most of the issues I have with this phone come from changes to Android (missing features Google has deemed "inappropriate" now, nesting settings menu items many levels deep, etc.), but this phone just doesn't have enough RAM to get out of its own way. You'll select something and expect it to go there, but it waits..., and waits..., while you select it again thinking it didn't get the memo, but then it will select the next item to pop up AFTER your first selection, like it's always playing catch up. I went back to an older phone with twice the RAM.

Thank you for the review. The design of the phone ZA550KL comes with 1GB and a smaller footprint of the OS Android GO by Google. Android Go is designed for the essential phones with low system requirement as they are cost effective devices and takes up a lot less memory for basic phone usage. For more information about Android GO, please reference the link https://www.android.com/versions/go-edition. ZA550KL has a big, bright 5.5-inch Full View 18:9 display and less frame, and long-lasting 3000mAh battery. We have received awesome feedback from customers about this model. Thanks to previous reviews to not experience the shutdown issue. Its a nice phone for kids to ensure they can make calls to parents as needed. It unlocked with dual sim. Haven't tried another sim but so far works good. Also was trying to put Garmin Connect app but that is not visible it the appstore on the ASUS phone, though that is available on the google appstore.

I bought this phone as a low cost replacement. It was about $100. It has a nice display, good memory (16 GB), is a name brand, and seems to be working good. One of the buttons stopped working a couple of days after I bought it, but I power-cycled the phone and removed the battery for about a minute, and that fixed it. There have been no problems for since then, about 3 weeks so far.

I took my son for his first phone ever and it looked great, nice size, nice weight. We purchased it, left the store, and 100 feet down the road it turned off and didn't seem to want to turn back on. We went back, they plugged it in and got it to turn on and we left again. Since then it has turned off a couple times. I think we may have to return it for a different phone.

Good price, capable to use 2 lines (2 simcards) and unlocked. All that I was looking for in one cellphone. Otherwise, it has a good camera, the lifetime battery is okay, the screen has a good resolution. Just one point, when it is running a very hard task, sometimes it took more time than I expected.
