————————————Pros—————————————
Movie:
Great action war movie that was nowhere near the experience of this new version compare to when I watched it in the theater when it came out.
Picture:
Always a great picture on an OLED panel & because it’s an older movie I had to switch to my other custom HDR setting to avoid grain.
Audio:
Atmos was impressive & was a reference demo material. Played on an Oppo through a 11.2 (7.2.4). There was life like moments for example, when helicopter scenes where projected on screen above you, the height ceiling channels activated giving you a realistic atmosphere. There were some 360 surround & some front and back panning that gives you that immersive sound we look for.
Digital Copy:
Yes
Steel case:
Yes.
————————————Cons————————————
Price:
Too high considering it’s an old title.

Sony is continuing it's great run of catalog films in 4K. Black Hawk Down looks and sounds amazing and is an upgrade from the already amazing blu-ray. The steelbook is a disappoint though. The front is the same as regular 4K cover and the back the shot of Josh Hartnett from the previous blu-ray release along with no interior artwork. It's not terrible just nothing special. Whether you purchase the regular 4K edition or the steelbook this is a release well worth buying.

The movie was fine out of the package and was bought as it was the only blu ray option for this movie at the time of purchase from Best Buy. However, I am now going to have to purchase a 4k Tv/player that I don't already have if I want to watch the extended version as it is only on the 4k disc.

The digital copy DOES NOT include the extended cut yet the case would have us believe so. Basically I’ve been in constant email talks with Vudu, SONY and Movies Anywhere and it’s been like musical chairs in terms of accountability. Bounced around like crazy. The case and pamphlet inside do not state at all that you don’t get a digital copy for the extended cut so it’s ridiculous upon redemption that you only receive the theatrical cut on VUDU. This was poorly marketed. It would’ve taken only one more sentence with an asterisk on the case saying ‘Hey Fam the extended cut is disc only and the digital copy is only theatrical’. See how simple that was. Even then, I wouldn’t buy it of course if they did actually do that. At this point I’ve semi given up and taken this L. A Vudu agent emailed me again recently so I’ll update this accordingly if I can.

Depending on the day of the week, Ridley Scott is responsible for my favorite film of all-time (Alien, which also found its way onto 4K this year,) or second favorite, just behind James Cameron's Aliens. Black Hawk Down and Tombstone rank directly behind those two.
Despite my love for all things Alien, when it comes to Ridley Scott, you'd be hard-pressed to convince me that among his long career that Scott has crafted a film more important than Black Hawk Down.
The events of Mogadishu are now over 25 years of age, and it's been 18 years since it debuted in theaters. Hopefully, this introduction to the new 4K format will also bring it to the attention of a new audience, as well, bringing to light the ill-fated, over-confident "in & out" mission the American forces attempted in their own interests, outside the knowledge of their allies, only to see their underestimation cost them dearly when seemingly the whole of Mogadishu fall upon them.
The story here; not only of the American's misplaced bravado in assuming much, but more importantly, and thankfully, much more highlighted, is the heroics, the brotherhood, and the self-sacrifice, is told in a way very few films manage to capture. Rarely does Scott (if ever,) dwell on TELLING the viewers the faults or attributes of these soldiers and their commanders, and relies on showing you what you need to know.
And, in that regard, viewers will take what they want away from Black Hawk Down. While it's going to be appreciated and have you FEELING more (Shughart and Gordon always makes my eyes well up,) if you choose to watch this as the visual spectacle of an action film it ALSO is, you'll still be left breathless.
On the technical side, Ridley Scott has always had flourish, and it translates gorgeously to the 4K format in such beauty that you'd be forgiven in believing it wasn't filmed that way originally.
The care for the film continues onto the extras, where every single extra from the masterful 3 disc DVD Collector's Edition that was issued many years ago has been ported over.
Lastly, among this stellar cast- many of whom didn't have a lengthy cast sheet at the time, keep an eye out Game of Thrones fans, for Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister,) as Delta Sniper Gary Gordon in one of his first big roles.

solid performing UNCOMPRESSED AUDIO track

This review is only about the uniqueness of the disc as this an old movie and if you're buying the 4K version, you probably have the DVD already.
But, for those of you who do not have a 4K monitor with HDR capability, there's another reason you should be on the look out for this disc.
The Blu-ray version has been beefed up using the new 4K mastering process.
Picture is 5 / 5 (the grain in the image is what was intended for the cinematic look)
However, a hidden gem NO website or review site has mentioned about the bluray:
UNCOMPRESSED 5.1 LPCM audio track on the bluray.
Dolby Atmos, DTS-X are "lossless" - not the same as uncompressed - and with a quality receiver or seperates, you will DEFINITELY hear the quality difference.
Atmos / DTS-X outshines dTS_HD or Dolby TRueHD only because they are object based. But all are compressed and then uncompressed using a lossless algorithm.
But Uncompressed hasn't go through all that extra processing, and worth the price of the disc itself, to me.
i hope more manufacturers go with the Uncompressed Audio Track on their Blu-rays in the future.

First things first, this film is a classic. If you haven’t seen it, this is the definitive edition. The film came out in 2002, and is a Great War movie that shows the gritty side to war, where even peace keeping is dangerous.
With that said, it’s a Sony transfer, so you can expect a reference quality disc. That’s exactly what you get. You get a native 4K transfer (from a new 4K scan of the 35MM film) with an amazing Dolby Atmos soundtrack that sounds better than it ever did, even in the theater. You also get the extended edition that adds to the movie. If you want to show off your 4K and sound system, it’s a no brainer.

I remember the original "Black Hawk Down" battle; I was waiting to see how this would be brought to the screen. I was not disappointed. The grit was well portrayed, the score was on target, the visuals were darned good, too.
Yes, some characters were completely made up; the movie is a "movie", not a documentary, after all, but, it captured the feel of the real thing quite well.
The 4K version is beautiful. Would recommend seeing this version. At least see it in 1080P. Anything less and you miss the great cinematography.

I've been wanting to add this movie to my collection but since it has been available on Netlfix or Hulu for a while, I never got around to buying it.
When I heard it was getting released on UHD, I decided to buy it. However, I wasn't big on it being full price so I decided to wait until it went on sale.
I have not watched this in quite some time so I can't compare the UHD version to regular Blu Ray but I can say that I noticed the overhead effects.
I love that like most new releases, it came with a Blu Ray disc and digital copy.

This happened in real life, men gave their lives for something they believe in, for their brothers. These based on true events movies aren’t always 100% accurate, but some bits are, stories gathered from soldiers. This is a perfectly executed, well paced film. This isn’t something you watch, this is an experience, you experience what the soldiers went through and how they delay after losing their friends during battle.

A well made, beautifully shot film. A tribute to those soldiers who were there and who had made the ultimate sacrifice. I remember watching and hearing about this on the news back then, but it wasn't until I saw the the movie that I realized what a harrowing experience these soldiers went through that day.
The 4K transfer is astounding. This 4K blu ray disc can easily pass for film released today.

Black Hawk Down stars an exceptional cast including Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor and Eric Bana. In 1993, an elite group of American Rangers and Delta Force soldiers are sent to Somalia on a critical mission to capture a violent warlord whose corrupt regime has led to the starvation of hundreds of thousands of Somalis. When the mission goes quickly and terribly wrong, the men find themselves outnumbered and literally fighting for their lives.

This movie by director Ridley Scott (Aliens) stands as one of my absolute favorite war movies. It is the true story of US Special Forces Unit that was trying to desatablize the Somalian Government and bring the people food and aid. Right from the get go, 2 Black Hawk helicopters are shot down and the story is the struggle of them trying to survive. Ewan McGregor, Josh Hartnett, and Tom Sizemore give some of the best acting in their careers.
