It took a little bit to get used to the operation (programming) of my new TiVo, but now I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Pleasantly surprised by the capabilities of TiVo. Rising cable bill costs mostly due to equipment left me really unhappy. Snagged this, a cable card, a a few TiVo minis, and things changed overnight. It is a bit of an investment, but when you calculate box fees over a several year period, this is peanuts.

TiVo unit was easy to setup! TiVo’s technical support was excellent with very comprehensive TV guide once setup! It even has a signal strength meter built into the software to help aim the roof antenna! Came with voice remote and feature commercial skip feature! I’m very happy with my purchase!

Replacement Cable Box Alternative to beat the fees

Not gonna go too long on my review, I bought the Tivo Bolt for two reasons: 1. To avoid the fees to the cable company that I get my TV service from just for having a cable box and 2. To create a whole house DVR solution. My Current Cable provider doesn't provide whole house DVR like Dish and Directv does and the current Tivo technology can do a whole house solution when you pair Tivo minis which I strongly recommend as to pair it to the Tivo Bolt so you can watch TV and DVR recordings from anywhere in the house to view programming from other rooms. If you go this route, setup can be a pain because you have to get a CableCARD and a digital tuner from the cable company before you can begin the Tivo setup along with creating an account with them but once you are able to set it up in full it works very well. It took me a while to get use to the tivo menus and guide and figuring out how to setup recording but this investment is worth it to beat back at the cable companies ridiculous fees.

A really good DVR

A really good DVR that is simple to set up and use. I have a few minor nitpicks on an otherwise good item. The shape of the case makes it hard to integrate into an AV shelf. The other is the lack of support for online services such as DirecTV Go and Sling.

TIVO sabotages the box if you don't subscribe

According to TIVO, you can still use the box if you don't subscribe to the plan for $20/month, but you can only use it as a set top box without the guide. However, that is also a lie. If you set it up and pair the cable card without subscribing, it will say "TIVO account suspended" after 12 days and within 24 hours of that it will completely fail. In other words, when you unplug and replug, it won't even start up. Screen goes blank, which means that the hard drive is corrupted.
Call TIVO and they give you a phony response. They say that this is a common problem with Best Buy boxes because they don't store them properly or they have been on the shelf a very long time. If you buy from TIVO website directly, it never happens. Then they say that "but if you buy from our website, you will be forced to buy a subscription with it". At that point I knew what was going on.
1. I bought 3 boxes from best buy, all of which had the exact same problem and had to be returned. I am very fortunate that the defect occurred within the 14-day return period. If this were a problem with best buy neglecting its products, we would have different issues.
2. The boxes were less than 6 months old. The manufacture dates were listed, so unless TIVO is saying that the boxes are supposed to fail within 6 months...
3. The boxes come in boxes wrapped in plastic, so there is no way to destroy them. If temperature is the issue, they come in the same truck as any other best buy electronic product, and nothing else is a problem.
I personally think that the $20/month TIVO subscription charge is a ripoff and defeats the purpose of buying it. (to avoid cable provider rental charge). If you don't pay the TIVO subscription charge, the box is worthless.

If you want to cut the cable this is the device to do it with. The TiVo is a super product. It will not disappoint. The interface and program menus are easy to read, navigate and are well thought out. It can time shift 4 programs at once. The picture quality and sound are superior to any cable box (even with OTA antenna) and it search functions are outstanding. It also connects to several streaming services such as Amazon Prime, Hulu and U-Tube, it truly is a complete package

We moved from a CETON and windows media center (win7) to this box due to growing compatibility issues. We especially like how the Tivo will show us streaming options for current live TV that may be available online (Hulu, amazon, Netflix, etc). It plays very nice with Comcast, and the guide and voice controls are even better than Comcast X1, makes that box look "dumb". Not to mention, sports actually shows sports, movies, etc. without a bunch of additional options. It also remembers what teams I watch, and ensures they are on the top of the list....It is a great device!

I have had various Tivo systems over the years. This one has a lot of features I may never use. But my hangup is the remote. In times past the remote would light up allowing you to easily use it in the dark. The new remote I literally have it in my right hand and my cell phone with its light in the other so I can see where the little buttons that are frequently used are located.
I would still overall recommend tosomone as Tivo spoils you with the way you can skip or at least fast forward through commercials of recorded shows.

Nice DVR for the price

This DVR was a little difficult to set up and I was not happy with the fact that it required a monthly fee to access the TIVO service on top of the fact that it required Internet which already has a monthly fee. I was really looking for a DVR that would work directly with my Cable service which this does not seem to be the case with this one. Unfortunately the salesman misinformed me as to that fact and failed to mention the additional fee needed to operate this product after I specifically asked for a DVR that would work directly with my Cable without needing the internet or any other program.

Nice upgrade from Premiere

We've had a Premiere XL for many years and decided it was time to upgrade. The Bolt's menus took a little getting used to as they are different, but it wasn't bad. We also got a Vox for the bedroom (and got rid of our last cable box). It takes a little time to connect, but works great otherwise.
Streaming over the internet has been a bit of an adventure, with some successful and some not so successful runs, but can be really cool.

A strong alternative to the cable box trap

Having moved with the Navy seven times since 2010, I’ve had the “opportunity” to subscribe to and rent cable boxes from four major cable providers. Every time I was left wishing I could put together my own box with the interface I liked. I finally decided to try something different with my latest move and I invested in TiVo Bolt Vox and two satellite Vox devices. My family and I have been very happy with the TiVo, and except for some initial setup problems getting my CableCard activated, the TiVo has worked flawlessly.

Features on the Tivo make it worth while to replace my Comcast unit with this. Had to call Comcast to get all the channels on the cablecard. The Commercial skip feature on the major networks is fantastic on your recordings! Wish list is great. Channel guide is much better than Comcast's. Gotta watch out for suggestions because it will record a bunch of shows it feels you will watch. 13 house hunters and we don't watch the show. But you can turn it off easily. I also got the Tivo mini and it works great over my ethernet network. Get this on sale when they lower the price and pay for a year of Tivo subscription. Oh yea it integrates Netflix and Amazon prime along with the cable channels, no more searching!!

When this unit works, it works! However, it cuts out regularly and does not pair well with Spectrum cable. It records as scheduled and can hold a ton of recordings. However, having to restart the system constantly makes it barely worth not paying for Spectrum's box.

Just bought this to move away from our DTV service, which is going away. Works very well for recording OTA programming, but does NOT support the latest Hulu app with Live TV, nor does it have all the channels that we get on Hulu on PC, obsolete Roku, and iphone. The concept of having one remote for everything was enticing, but having to change TV inputs to the Roku to watch shows that we normally see is not what we wanted. TiVo support won't tell me when live streaming might be added. My return window is closing, and I might have return it. I see that Tivo has just released a new version, the Edge, but it likely has the same limitations on streaming services. The cost of subscription for the TV guide is a bit high in my opinion.
