    I like the dial and the large buttons are easy to use. (That’s why I selected this one.) I wish it was higher voltage— seems to take longer to heat the food. I think for the price, it should be higher voltage.

    Absolutely will not heat food. All other set up OK and beeps to say “End” after timer and power settings OK. Stone cold frozen macaroni 5 times.

    This is a microwave. It heats things up. It is of a simple design and has a small footprint (ie it's compact -- says it right there; the Breville Compact Soft Close). High quality materials as well as quality fit and finish are found throughout. If you are looking for any combination of those things, then this is certainly a model to consider. If you are looking for a large microwave, obviously skip this one. It is a very close call with larger dinner plates (paper plates and smaller serving plates are fine) so again, this is COMPACT. If you are looking for one that is sleek and minimal, I would also suggest skipping this one as the appearance, while clean, is far from minimal. The large buttons on the front, large font, as well as the huge green and red logos on the primary operation buttons are anything but subtle. They don't bother me too much, but if this were our primary microwave and not one being used in the in-law area, I might even consider returning it if I had to look at it each and every morning coming into the kitchen. Now, this has nothing to do with it's operation, but aesthetics are part of reviews and owning something, so I figure I'd at least point it out. Speaking of operation, the Compact Soft Close does so wonderfully. The 30 second quick start is pretty standard at this point, but the rotary dial to alter the time (turn left to decrease, right to increase) is something new to me. Love this feature and could see this type of thing being very useful if this model is intended for younger or older operators. About those aforementioned green and red buttons, while they might not totally appease my eyes, I could totally see this being helpful for the same two demographics; younger and older people. Gifting this to your Grandparents or Great Grandparents would be a welcome holiday gift. No little buttons to mess with. No hunting and pecking to alter the time. Just spin the dial to adjust the time -- makes total sense why Breville (possibly) set this unit up this way. The Compact Soft Close also has a lot more power than other models I've seen at this size, some over double. So heating things thoroughly is not a problem. Use one of the programs to avoid burning the heck out of things, which are standard options like beverage, defrost, popcorn, etc etc etc -- and while we've only used a couple of them, they all did a great job and didn't overcook or ruin a single plate of reheats or bag of popcorn. And the Soft Close part of the namesake. 2AM snacks need not wake anyone up anymore as the operation is not only really quiet, but the closing action on the door is, too. I wouldn't say it's absolutely whisper quiet, but it is extremely quiet compared to just about every single other microwave I've used in recent memory. Has a nice solid feel to it, all while not being even remotely hard to open/close. This *again* has me thinking this was possibly designed for younger/older operators and come to think of it, works out great in our in-law area. Your welcome Mom, Dad, and my wife's Mom and Dad. Your welcome very much! While it isn't a "you *have* to buy this thing!" level of an item, the Breville Compact Soft Close does offer a lot of great features and quality for the price. If the aesthetics were more up my alley this would be closer to a 5, and if they figured out a way to keep the same outer footprint while offering just a smidge more room on the inside that would've certainly put it at a 5-star score. If those two things aren't a big deal to you, consider this a 5-star item. For me, it's a strong 4 and an easy recommendation all the same.

    Fire!

    I bought this in 2020 and it started going in actual flames this past summer if anything with fat was in it. No melting butter, hearing up things like taco shells, it’s actually pretty scary it makes a vibrating sound and stsrts crackling with flames, stops as soon as we hit the off button. We keep it clean, noticed the inside top roof line looks rusty, maybe not made with enough coating? Very expensive junk. The ‘brushed stainless’ isn’t metal either, it’s a dull gray plastic.

    Stopped working in less than a month…

    This microwave worked great for the first few weeks after we started using it. It suddenly stopped working - can’t heat a cup of water and won’t pop a small bag of popcorn. We are outside of our return window (3 weeks) so Best Buy won’t help. We are trying to work with Breville but they are impossible to get a hold of. Save yourself the hassle and buy a different microwave.

    Overpriced, over-rated, could have caused a fire

    Soft close door stopped working after a week, door then needed slamming with the hinges engaging as they should about 50% of the time. This last weekend, the unit was 7 months old, it sparked at the socket, tripped the circuit breaker and blackened and deformed the plug on the unit - lucky it didn't cause a fire or lasting damage to my breaker. In the process of returning - will update this review when I know how the return will work out. Do not recommend, overpriced junk.

    Like the way it looks and functions hence the two stars but turntable and latch both broken in less than a month, and BB won’t exchange so I now need to deal with Breville warranty claim. Never again with either. My last microwave lasted 10 years and this one didn’t even make it 10 weeks.

    I got this one from Best Buy but when I heating the food normally it doesn’t take that long but this one 2 mints and after food was still hot enough so I had to reheated again.

    Potential safety issue ... fire hazard.

    Bought unit in Sep 2020. Big safety issue now. Somewhat randomly, but often, the unit will make a loud buzzing/rattling sound and you can see sparks in the interior on the right side (where the rectangular pad is). There is also smoke, and you can see black marks on the rectangular pad from the sparks. Very disappointed that the unit lasted less than 2 years.

    Don't waste your money. Mine arrived in a torn-up box, did not work from the start and the lower part of the handle was attached to a hole too large for the handle with rough metal edges extending so as to cut your hand. For this price, I expected much better. I only wish there were negative star ratings; one star is too generous.

    Does not heat evenly

    This is a disappointment. It takes twice as long as my cheap old microwave to heat things, and does not heat evenly. Will be burning hot in some spots and freezing cold in others. Also makes the dish extremely hot to the touch, even if the food isn’t heated through.

    I like how this microwave works but ours came with scratches on one side. This isn't the first time Best Buy has sent us a damaged appliance. It was probably returned by another customer (box had already been opened) and then passed around from a distribution center in the hopes that we would keep it despite the damage...wish they had just marked it down and sold it at their store. It's such a waste of shipping and driving to deal with their damaged merchandise.

    How do I disable child lock on Soft Close Micro?

      SETTING THE DOOR LOCK
      To enable or disable the microwave door locking function, press and hold the following buttons in the following sequential order:
      1. Door lock button.
      2. Clock setting button.
      3. Mute button Once this feature is enabled or disabled, there will be 3 consecutive audible beeps.

      You'll want to make sure the clock has been set, and that the alerts haven't been muted prior to doing these steps. brevilleusa
