Countertop ovens have been around for decades, and they do what they’ve pretty much always done—cook food, just a like a full-size oven. I’ve prepared several main dishes as well as reheated leftovers in the Calphalon quartz oven, and it did these tasks with aplomb. Its small size means it uses less energy, but it also means you’re limited in the size of bakeware you can put inside. For those who live in small apartments, or if you're cooking just for yourself or perhaps two people, something like this might be all you need. If you’re preparing several dishes that require baking at different temperatures, such as you might be doing for a dinner party, having something like this handy as a second oven can be very useful. It toasts bagels and bread beautifully. Whether its worth buying just for this purpose over a conventional toaster is a separate issue. But if you buy it for its baking capabilities, the added advantage of the best toast you’ve ever had is a nice bonus. The advantages to this particular oven are its attractive looks, the quartz heater, which speeds preheating and makes for a more uniform distribution of heat, and the electronic controls, which brings the oven into the modern age and allows programming the oven's operation for different types of food. My only negative? The warning beep when the oven has finished preheating or the timer has reached zero is not very loud, or at least not as loud as I’d like. But this is a minor criticism. If you need a countertop oven, you will not go wrong with the Calphalon quartz countertop oven.
