The Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro STM has quickly become my go-to lens for portraits. It delivers stunning image quality with beautiful, creamy bokeh that makes every subject stand out. The sharpness is excellent, even wide open, and the colors come out rich and natural—perfect for capturing flattering skin tones and expressive details.
What really makes this lens shine is its versatility. It’s not only incredible for portraits but also great for close-up shots thanks to its 1:2 macro capability. The autofocus is smooth and quiet, and the lightweight design makes it easy to handle during long shoots. Whether I’m working indoors or in natural light, this lens consistently produces professional, dreamy results that make every portrait pop.

PRO:
- good focal length for portraits
- small, compact, lightweight
- f/2.0 fast aperture, nice BOKEH blur
- IS image stabilized
- Macro 1:2
-Customizable ring on lens, like for ISO or aperture etc.
CON:
- Macro is only half life size (1:2 vs ;)
- Not L lens
- Focus hunts sometimes, not recommended for action (better in the L-version 85mm f/1.2)
**Note: I have certain preferences which this lens did not could fulfill completely.
Still a good alternative to professional L-lenses.***

I did a lot of research between getting a slightly cheaper EF 85mm 1.8 or this RF F2. Ultimately I opted for this. The photos I’ve shot so far have been really nice, the f2 is plenty for a nice blurry background (which is easy at this focal length with the lens compression). And the macro function is a nice bonus, even though I don’t shoot a lot of macro stuff. The only negative is its size, and it’s not that big of a deal. It’s by far my biggest lens (except for a cinema lens I own). It’s got a little weight to it too, because of this I experience just a tiny bit of wiggle when it’s connected to my canon R8. It’s not a deal breaker for me, but even with an adapter, my smaller EF lenses are all locked in nice and tight. I think because mirrorless cameras are so light, it just is pulling so much on the connection. This causes me no issues during use when I’m holding the camera and lens. Photo quality is good and autofocus has been fast and accurate for me. Just be sure to change the toggle on the lens for the focal distance you expect to shoot: it has one for macro only (under 4 feet away), standard use (over 4 feet away) or full focus plane (macro to infinity).

I was looking for great Portrait lens. This does the job and more! Also has a great macro feature. The only complaint, I wish it would focus a tad quicker. However, this is still a must have addition for any photographer.

So far this lens is excellent, well worth the price for the versatility of this Macro 85mm, being able to use this for a variety of different uses. The portraits I've taken so far have come out amazing, the F2 allows for a lot of give in lower light environments, was able to use this lens on the shadow side of the Eiffel Tower during sunset and was able to still grab a crisp image.
Would Recommend.

Excellent lense, this is ideal for anyone who wants to capture great images, especially portraits in lowlight environments. Definitely recommended and not too expensive.

I absolutely love the 85mm focal length. I was excited when this lens was announced as the only other native option was the massive (both size and price) 85mm f1.2. This lens is kind of a miss tho, while image quality is not bad, the performance is sluggish at times and images are just kind of….meh. It’s odd to me that while Sony and Nikon (and even 3’rd party lenses) are making the ultra quiet fast focusing lenses that canon stuck with their noisy old fashion STM motor. I get that it’s a pseudo macro lens, but I honestly think the USM motor would have made this lens a killer. The IS feature is nice to have, especially if you’re pairing it with the original R or RP. Overall, it’s ok, nothing spectacular

The BEST portrait lens. Closer than the 50mm and so clear. The bokeh effect is super! But it is heavy, but if you can hold your phone in your hand all day then you got this!!

I ditched my sigma EF for this because i also wanted a macro option. I posted a picture taken with this and said it was done with a sigma 85 1.4 and said i shot at 1.4. It was of a couple, no one batted an eye. I love the lens. It does hunt a little longer than my sigma did but who really holding a stop watch to a camera lens.

I love this lens. It’s sharp and light weight. It is great for portraits! Yes, there are better lenses but this lens is worth the money and does a great job.
