    Unknown "Best Picture" Oscar winner

Probably the least seen Oscar winning Best Picture (1932) gets its due in this worthwhile blu-ray. It is an epic attempt to film Noel Coward's hit play that details the first thirty years of the 20th Century through the experiences of a fictitious British family, their friends and servants. It sounds like soap opera, but that is not at all what is accomplished. Dignified, cogent, sometimes a bit stodgy, but faithful to history. Seems longer than its 110 minute running time, probably because there are so many events represented, rather than actual disinterest from the viewer. Movie critic Richard Schickel provides much needed commentary which provides filmic and historical detail emphasizing the importance of this unknown oddity from the past. Director Frank Lloyd also won an Oscar as well as the art direction.

Sure it is episodic but this tale of a British family from the turn of the century to WWII is still entertaining. An early sound film, the acting may be overwrought at times but Noel Coward's play keeps the interest and Una O'Connor and Diana Wynyard shine as the Downstairs/Upstairs mothers whose intertwined fates rise and fall through the years.

If you are interested in old films, this one is for you. It moves slow but I’m not complaining about it. It’s character driven/Drama with a few good laughs due to the film being made in the 1930’s-you really see how times have changed. The movie is an experience. Some will like it others will find it hard to watch. I recommend

I have every Oscar Best Picture since Wings but my copy of this movie was a copied DVD version with very poor quality. Now I have the Blu-ray version. I found this in a Best Buy sale bin.

Picture/Quality of film not as good as expected for Blue Ray. Given the age of the film this may be the best film source available. Still an excellent film which went on to win Academy Award for best picture.

This is a older movie that I had previously seen, but my wife had not and I was delighted when I was able to purchase it from BestBuy at a good price so my wife and I can watch it anytime we want.

Great deal from Best Buy ($5.99) on this terrific 1933 film. The HD remastering is just amazing. Includes commentary and the Fox Movietone News from when Cavalcade won the Oscar.

I love when I grab an old film from before I was born and see a film that is unique, not a cookie cut same story they tend to churn out today, grab this one!

A Cavalcade of History Brings Oscar

When the Academy Awards ceremony comes around each year, there is usually a look back at the past years of film and especially the Best picture category. In the first 5 years of the "Academy Awards" the year reflected the date the film aired and the year of the award. In the case of CAVALCADE (1932-1933), it is the last time this dual date was used. From then on it was dated the year of the Award's ceremony. Recently released on Blu-ray, this B&W film based on a play by Noel Coward covers 3 decades of a British family's life from New Year's Eve of 1899 to New Year's Day of 1933, chronicling the highs and lows of life during war and tragedy. It is interesting to see the evolution of film and especially acting over the years. The over acting is evident in this talkie, which was the norm for films coming out of the silent ear. Cavalcade was the second most popular film in its day, but today rates just under 60% in approval.

I'd heard about "Cavalcade" for decades and had even seen a bit of it on a documentary about early sound films, but I'd never seen the complete film until I picked up a copy of it at Best Buy. The Academy Award-winning movie was enjoyable and evocative of the time period within it was set ... from the late 1800s into the 1930s. The characters are all of interest, and there is much growth and change in each of them as they make their way through turbulent times in England and the rest of the world. The acting, though a bit stage-bound in some cases, is very good overall, and the direction is far better than I had expected. Most important, the viewer truly cares about these characters and is caught up in the events that happen to them. Some knowledge of the time period is useful, but not completely necessary in order to enjoy the film. A few of the cultural and historical milestones will be known to viewers even more than 100 years after the actual events.
