What is this? It's Dark Souls. It's hard, unforgiving, rage-inducing, and yet easily one of the best gaming experiences of today. It's stunning, deep, and rewarding, truly rewarding, in a way that almost no modern game is. If you liked Dark Souls 1, you will like, or love, this game. If you've never liked a Souls game, this will not change your mind. This is a game for Souls, both Dark and Demons', fans. From Firelink Shrine, which looks like a beautiful reimagining of the Nexus from Demons' Souls, to the Sunbros with their classic, if slightly played out, "Praise the Sun" gesture, you will feel at home. The Cons? The camera and targeting system still suck. Not always, but both can go haywire during the more hectic moments of the game and during certain boss fights (avoid the Nameless King, whatever you do). The increased speed of the combat is a blessing and a curse. It's accurate to say that Dark Souls III has been inspired by its cousin Bloodborne. Enemies are incredibly quick, often much faster than you, and they attack in groups. Some enemies, quite simply, feel ripped from Bloodborne (the exploding Pus Men come to mind). This combined with the targeting and camera can equal a lot of frustration. Poise is dead. Heavy armor does not grant Poise, even though the stat still exists. Almost any enemy can interrupt or stun-lock you. "Hyper armor," granted by using heavier weapons like Greatswords and Ultra Greatswords, is a bit of a remedy, as are certain weapon arts like Perseverance (Black Knight Sword, all day), but it is still a bit irritating. The story makes no sense. Dark Souls I had the most straightforward story, but still left the door open for ambiguity and speculation as to the characters, world, and endings. The story in Dark Souls III is muddled, disconnected, and nonsensical. I still don't know why certain things happened. This isn't a deal breaker, but it does take away from the experience. All-in-all, a great game and more than suitable ending to a fantastic series.

Dark Souls 3 is a great end to a great series. The combat is deep and among the best I've ever played. The story is complex and revealed in subtle ways. You might not know exactly what is going on or why you are doing things in-game, but there's a lot of fun to be had searching online for other players' interpretations of the story and coming up with your own. Invasions and summons with other human players add even more excitement and variety. This series has a reputation for being obtuse and difficult, but I feel that is a bit overblown. This game is for anyone who likes action games but wants a different experience.

An excellent sequel for Soul fans

Dark Souls 3 is the third game in the Soul series. It's very similar to past games, which can be a bad or good thing depending on you feel about previous games. Instead of spells being granted a set number of use, you have a focus bar that depletes with each spell cast. New to this entry are weapon arts, which are special attacks used by melee weapons that deplete the focus bar. Spells do feel downgraded in power in this entry compared to past games unless you invest in a lot of points for sorcery or faith. Casting also takes far too long considering how aggressive enemies are now. Much like Bloodborne, the combat is a bit faster than past Dark Soul games. You also can't upgrade your armor either. There are a lot more weapon variations though many are clones with different stats as oppose to Bloodborne where each weapon is unique. Challenge wise the game has a more gradual difficulty climb as oppose to past games though being a veteran of the series will certainly help; the game is also not easy by any means either. Art direction is superb as well with the environment and enemies you face. Graphically speaking, I would say the game is about on par with Bloodborne or so. Unfortunately, performance could be better as the game doesn't run at a locked 30 fps. The game will run you easily 50 hours + if you go through all the area and side quests. If you're not tired of the Soul games yet, I would highly recommend picking this up.

First of all, not as hard as the reputation is on these games. Takes skill and attention to detail, but a very rewarding experience. Great melee combat system, magic, armor, exploration and incredible bosses. Well worth your time. Took me 63 hours to complete once.

This game was hard in a lot of areas, but that is what makes it fun. This and Bloodborne are two of my favorites from this company. I do have to rate Bloodborne above this, but this isn't that far below that in my opinion. These games take a lot of time so it does make you feel like the content is worth the cost. Great graphics, great gameplay, great action what more could you ask for.

I was a little reticent to pick up Dark Souls 3 due to its notoriously challenging reputation. I had previously played through Bloodborne and enjoyed it, but had a lot of trouble getting through Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin Edition. Also, I don't have a lot of time to game, so repeatedly dying is not currently my cup of tea. However, I am definitely glad I picked this up because it was a fantastic game! It has great graphics, atmosphere, character building, and most of all, memorable bosses. I started out fearing whether I was going to be able to make it, and ended up taking out every boss, including the optional ones. I would recommend paying close attention to make sure that you don't make a silly mistake that makes your life more challenging, but otherwise this is one of my favorite games of recent memory!

Another amazing game in a line of amazing games. I actually hadn't played any of these games until Bloodborne came out and I LOVED that game. So then my husband and I went back and played Dark Souls 1 & 2 side by side so we could be prepared for Dark Souls 3. So much fun, such an awesome game, extremely challenging. Not as creepy as Bloodborne, but still creepier than DS 2. We beat it a little faster than I would have liked, but we also didn't have to farm too much from all the practice. I can't wait until expansions come out in the fall. If you liked Demon Souls, Dark Souls or Bloodborne, then it shouldn't even be a question. Just purchase it and love it. Honestly, if you like video games at all, then purchase it and love it. SUCH A GREAT GAME!

Dark Souls has been a staple in my video game collection for years and the latest installment is another amazing dungeon romp. Graphics and controls have been improved, leading to a less frustrating experience than its predecessors. Add to this a supportive and active community to make PvP matching fast and exciting. Overall, the game seems more forgiving than DS1 and DS2 making for a more enjoyable experience to a wider audience. I highly recommend this game if you've wanted to get into the series but thought it was too difficult before.

...or quadrilogy if you count Demon's Souls...or quintology if you count Bloodborne. Everything you expect from the previous Dark Souls games is here. Strategic enemy interaction, spells, RPG elemental play, and of course unbending and at times unnerving difficulty. The only thing going against is this feels kind of a step backward from Bloodborne, which I preferred because it seemed a bit more streamlined. DSIII also seems to be the easiest out of all of the games. However, if you did not like some of the elements that Bloodborne took on (namely no shield or true magic skills), this is the current gen game to get (and the only true current gen game if you're on XB1). Great graphics that truly feel current unlike the DS2 remaster that came out a few years back. Looking forward to where From Software plan to unleash from here.

I've played all of the previous Dark Souls games as well as Demon Souls and I never actually made it very far in any of them. This one, I have been more patient and started out with a better character build. I am more focused this time and have put almost 60 hrs into it. Only 4 bosses left. The gameplay is intense and extremely difficult, but if you keep trying and build your character correctly, you can definitely make it through it. It just takes patience. Don't be afraid to summon others and ask for help. It definitely helps with some of the harder bosses!

Having played all the Dark Souls games and Bloodborne, I came in knowing exactly what to expect in terms of mechanics and world etc, and the game still delivered. It resembles Bloodborne more in terms of game-play, as it requires a more offense-heavy approach and a lot more rolling, but in terms of world and atmosphere it resembles the previous Dark Souls games. A great entry, and probably the greatest collection of overall bosses in the series, and the second hardest bosses only to Bloodborne.

It's alright. It's fun. It's fine. What more do you want from me? A f#%*ing neck rub? If you're just wondering if it's worth getting; it is. If you want to know why it's good as well as Dark Souls in general, then read on. I like difficult games. I was able to finish Ninja Gaiden II for the Xbox 360 on Mentor difficulty. One of my best achievements. If you call achievements sitting on your butt playing video games instead of going out and curing cancer. Or something. Ninja Gaiden II is hard but more for the cheap tactics the enemies do to you, the player. I had avoided Dark Souls because I didn't want another time sink of games considered hard for the wrong reasons like Ninja Gaiden II. A year ago I popped in Bloodborne which I got from Christmas of 2015 (It's from the same developers do it's literally the games as Dark Souls). And I liked it. Soon I got the other Dark Souls games. This was the last on my list. Now to go to my point: IT'S NOT AS HARD AS PEOPLE SAY IT IS! These games still are tough as nails. They'll pile drive you into the ground time after time because you can keep coming back. But in reality, persistence is the key here. NOT SKILL. This game is more fair in its deaths than Ninja Gaiden II without a doubt. People on the internet say it's always fair... BULLSH*T! A fair game doesn't require you to use cheap tactics to win. Which you WILL have to do at one point or another. "What do you know? You're just one player! Git gud! lol" If that's what you're thinking, why are you reading Best Buy reviews? Second, if you're saying this you probably already own this or watch other people play it. And third: I consider myself an expert on the subject of cheap game design. Ninja Gaiden II: -Unblockable explosive shuriken that stuns you when you're hit and the only way to not get badly hurt is to abuse invincibility frames -Enemies at the top of a tall ladder that can knock you back and kill you instantly -enemies that attack you when you're climbing across a rope with no way to attack or dodge -bosses with high damage outputs and fast wind-ups for strong attacks along with attacks that can easily break guards and have attack range further than you can dodge Dark Souls and Bloodborne -Game is not meant to take on multiple opponents at once because you get blindsided by an enemy you couldn't know was there. You have to usually get one's attention and repeat the process -boss attacks that one-shot you and require you to die over and over to understand their move set. -Nonlinear nature of the games can sometimes bring you to enemies that wipe the floor with you without possibly knowing prior -attacks that have further reach than you can dodge Both have many other instances of cheapness. Regardless, Dark Souls is a fun game series and worth your time. You will die a lot. Dying is the only way you can get some achievements/trophies! Perservere. I know you can do it.

The Souls series has always been a challenging franchise. In this iteration, FromSoftware, went back to its roots, which was Demon Souls, not Dark Souls. However, since this game is not an exclusive to one platform, the game suffers in performance. Obviously, I purchased the Ps4 version, and there was some low-frame rate issues during gameplay. Furthermore, the Xbox One versions suffers the same issue but even worse. It is not a deal-breaker but it does affect the perception of the game and MAY cause unforeseen deaths to the character. Overall, this is game will entertain, albeit more frustration than not, and it is worth a buy.

This is my second try at a souls game my first was dark souls 2. I could not get into the second game but I was drawn into this one. Starting as a knight is good for a new player and once you start to get the hang of it can not hurt to try a hybrid set up. you can do it as a knight as you play. Starting classes are really just stats you want to focus on. As a new player the knight has good armor and a nice shield. There are enemies that it is better to dodge there attacks even if you block with shield you will have no stamina to do anything after. Once you get the dodging down trying a more dex or even a setup with magic setup can be more fun. Most bows give bonus damage for high dex stat but there are some that give bonus to str stat. You can also use weapons with infusion of certain gems that get bonus damage from the int and faith stats or magic stats. There is something about fighting bosses and finally beating a boss you have been having trouble against (I am looking at you nameless king). If you are kindled you can be invaded but you can also summon other players to help you with boss fights. After the boss is defeated though you can not summon any help in that area. So long way of saying I enjoyed this game as new person to the series. I would also say have a bow to pull things so not have to fight large groups at least till you get the hang of stuff. Everything no matter how weak can kill you if you do not pay attention and really fast if they are in groups.

I enjoyed the Victorian age world and challenging combat. I tried Dark Souls 2 but its graphics felt too dated and the gameplay could've been better. I heard about Dark Souls 3 and the praise it was receiving, so I gave it a try. The graphics were much better than DS2 and the combat was much more fluid. I noticed how all the classes were so much different and wish Bloodborne had more weapons and types of weapons. In Bloodborne I started with a weird hood and small cape that every player started with and a saw that turns into a larger saw. In DS3 I started with a fur cloak and a fire spell and an axe and a shield that some people started with. Without DLC DS3 has more Weapon types than BB has actual weapons. Both Games are good but if someone likes offense based combat or more obscure worlds, they should start with BB. I love both, but Dark Souls III makes me feel like my character is unique. In BB, I feel like hundreds of players use LHB and wear the hunter's garb.

Couldn't say which is a the best. I like all the Souls series, my favorite may be the original Demon Souls. This is better than Dark Souls II by a large margin though. Great game though, not for the faint of heart, or those that get controller rage... Praise the Sun!
