In light of the newly released Batman 60's series, my purchased collection is the one for true die-hard fans of the Dark Knight. All the grit, realism and psychological angst that you could imagine! A true winner!

I loved the animated adaptation of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, though not as much as the adaptation of Miller’s other Batman book ‘Year One’. These two films are good companion pieces. The Dark Knight Returns tells the story of an aging Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement, donning the cape once more, to take on a new gang of criminals called The Mutants. Visually, the animation doesn’t come anywhere near Frank Miller’s drawings. That would be almost impossible to do. But the competency of the production and faithfulness to the material make that a forgivable offense. Peter Weller (of Robocop fame) shines as the voice of Bruce Wayne/Batman. The movie was originally released in two volumes. I watched the combined “Deluxe Edition”.

My love of the DC animated universe is firmly rooted in Batman: The Animated Series (the iconic groundbreaking series that shaped many viewers' love of Gotham and its one-of-a-kind characters). I have since developed a critical eye for animated stories that capture that same level of quality and imagination that the caped crusader's world can offer. With The Dark Knight Returns, I am happy to say that I have found both a worthy successor to the series and a fantastic adaptation of Frank Miller's classic graphic novel and a very well crafted film that combines deft animation with clever writing and, above all, a reverence to the dark, weighty, and downright adult source material (while managing not to alienate younger viewers) that resonates from the first image that appears on screen. This blu-ray iincludes both excellent parts fused into one seamless cut that provides viewers with a kinetic thrill ride of an experience that's well worth their time. The Blu Ray itself features very strong technical merits in the form of excellent sound and picture quality (I recommend surround sound as it makes the story pop and envelop you thoroughly). Special features are dazzling as the package includes a feature-length Frank Miller documentary and a new commentary in addition to several other worthy featurettes.-this is the set to own, hands-down. Simply put, for either the casual fan or the die-hard aficionado, this complete cut features an unforgettable story that is worth revisiting time and time again. I highly recommend it!

This is by far the best animated "Batman" movie. Hands down. So glad they adapted Frank Miller's great story to film.

The Dark Knight Returns the most influential Batman story ever written, the Frank Miller master stroke is one of my favorite bits of storytelling ever, character development at its finest. This adaptation tries it's best to stay faithful the the source material while keeping a PG-13 rating and that was a mistake an adaptation demands a commitment to the material. Small changes shift the meaning and power of scenes completely, the knife wielding thugs Bruce Wayne encounters in crime alley for instance, in the book they back off and lose interest when they realize he's going to defend himself, he's not a victim and therefore it would be boring killing him so they head to the arcade instead, in the movie there just scared of him they lose the implication of just how bad these kids are. The worst offenses are the cheap attempt to add more action to the story by making the fight with Superman an actual fight, it wasn't in the book it couldn't be and not using narration losing the best parts of the book honestly. But harping on the fact that it doesn't live up and in some places doesn't respect the material doesn't change the fact that it is entertaining, has a great 80s synth soundtrack, it bring's the amazing visuals to life, and has mostly solid performances (I'm not sold on the Joker) while I can recommend it honestly if you've never read the book pick up the trade on amazon or at your local book store for the same price.

DCU: Batman - The Dark Knight Returns Deluxe Edition Blu-ray puts onto the screen Frank Miller's iconic graphic novel, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. The 2.5 hour movie presentation (the Deluxe Edition seamlessly includes part 1 and part 2 which are available separately on discs) takes us into a violent, lawless Gotham City 10 years after an aged Bruce Wayne/Batman had retired. With the city under siege by a mutant gang, Batman returns to crime fighting more vengeful and violent as ever, attracting the attention of government and politicians. Batman's actions will eventually lead him into a 'super' confrontation with a friend and former ally. This movie adaptation is true to the graphic novel source material. A classic. It is violent; not for young children.

The world is changing, super heros are banned for some reason, and the world of Gotham is falling apart without the Batman to keep things in check. The only problem is Bruce Wayne is an old guy. But Bruce Wayne isn't like other grumpy men. He doesn't show stupid kids off his lawn with his grandpa wrinkled upturned fist. He kicks the kids butts. Things just get better from there. The pacing is quite good for the entire feature. The only thing I didn't like so much was the portrayal of Superman and President Reagan. It is disturbing to see the relationship these two form however I feel that there is a back story missing here that just isn't quite realized in the movie. Otherwise I did enjoy this movie and I'm sure that you will to.

This Animated movie shows Batman's later years in depth. The voice acting is excellent especially Peter Weller (Yes, Robocop is Batman) and Keith Michael Emerson as an older and more careless Joker. Two Face's part of the story is a bit rushed as is superman's segment. The Joker and mutant's sections are very well paced though. It would be nice though if DC would make at least one of these animated Batman films less gloomy and dark. Batman is a very versatile character and it would be nice to see some of the silver age comics adapted. Still, for what it is this is a very great movie that is faithful to the graphic novel.

Although this movie does not have Kevin Conroy's voice acting, it is still one of the best Batman cartoon movies, if not the best. I have always wanted a longer Batman cartoon movie that truly delves into the Dark Knight and one of his stories. This movie accomplishes that, and more. At almost 2 1/2 hours, this is everything I have ever wanted.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Batman, casual or hardcore. Even if you have never read the source material, you will love this version of the Dark Knight Returns. There are a few changes to the story but other wise, it is very faithful to the comic book. Minor complaint but I was very distracted by Peter Weller voicing Batman. I guess I believe that Kevin Conroy should voice Batman in EVERYTHING

Amazing Blu-ray with a huge amount of extra content! Besides the fact that the film itself is executed masterfully in this retelling of the epic Dark Knight Returns story, there is just so much extra content in the way of featurettes, commentary, full length episodes of related animated DC tv shows, and documentaries, that it's worth the money just to get those alone. Great purchase!

I'm a big fan of the DC universe. Typically when I purchase an animated movie by DC I get an experience that ranges from okay to really good. This title took me by surprise and brought me back to the works of Frank Miller. I wasn't expecting to see what I saw which made this a purchase that no fan of Frank Miller's work should pass up. This is a must buy and for mature audiences.

The film is a faithful adaptation of the graphic novel, with good voice talent and beautiful animation. The extras on the set are nice looks at the history of the comic and its characters. There are also a few bonus episodes of the old Batman cartoon included. If you are even a casual Batman fan, then this is worth checking out. If you are a huge fan. It's even better.
