A very nice laptop, very fast response times. The large screen makes it easier to view. It was an Open Box purchase, and I haven't seen any manuals or Windows 8 tutorial, so it's a little confusing getting used to Windows 8. But I am happy with it so far.

OK, I am a W7 bigot. If I could have bought this Inspiron 17 with W7, it would get excellent ratings. W8, even with the update to W8.1 does not have a laptop look-and-feel. It feels like MS tried to make a laptop OS behave like a smartphone. It does not. Hardware is great (mostly), but the arrangement of the function keys is non-intuitive. Last laptop was a Dell Precision M4500, felt very comfortable. I will get used to the change eventually. Includes the DVD in the chassis, nice, and what I require. I use a mouse, but the touchpad is fine, if you use it. OS is MS-W8... too bad... overall - a good solid laptop, if Dell can solve their heat-battery issues.

After much research, I decided that this open box Dell was the best value that I could find. With so many reviewers complaining about Windows 8, I found that it was not hard to get used to it, especialy with the touch screen. The first time I tried the touch screen in the store, I knew that I would realy like it.

Well too many goods for this laptop. Starts fast, easy to get to know, has a touch screen if needed etc. Thought windows 8.1 was difficult but it really is not. The only thing that is a little wrong, it is heavy.

BIG screen on this powerful laptop. Good for lite gaming. touch screen is kind of a novelty not too useful. Easier to use the mouse. Windows 8 just sings right along on this laptop. Kind of big to carry around everyday.

Purchased because of the large touch screen. I am using it to replace my desktop and it does a good job of it. The only draw back is that I'm still getting use to Windows 8.1. I've had no issues so far.

Had a software issue within the first ten days (not Dell's fault), so went online to use online tech, and found out that, according to online records, I was no longer entitled to use that feature. That was (hopefully) corrected during my phone support session. Session follow up by tech, and tech's supervisor (by phone and email) was good. Might be a problem with the internal mic, though, as I was informed by a friend on Skype that I was very difficult to hear.

We actually went to the store to purchase a new desktop computer to replace our 8 year old HP. After looking at selections in our price range, we were not getting the I5 Intel Processor that we wanted. Our salesman directed us to this Dell Inspirion laptop that was reduced in price as an open box item. It had all the things we wanted at an exceptional price, so the decision to buy it was easy.

I love this laptop - like the keyboard, wide screen and it's fast. The one drawback is that I cannot hook an external monitor to it - or at least I haven't figured out how to. It has an hdmi port so it can be connected to a TV but I'm used to using 2 monitors and I can't do that. Maybe someone knows if there is a dongle of some sort out there that will allow it from a 9-pin monitor cable.

Don't Believe the Hype

Repeatedly I read that this machine is "lighting fast" - don't believe the hype.
We actually bought 2 machines - the 15" and the 17" - and both are sluggish. For us, there's no advantage to the touch screen - Windows 8 is unimpressive - And have I mentioned that the machines are slow? Another design oddity is that the letters on the backlit keyboard are white; which makes it difficult to see the keys in certain lighting. Additionally, the touchpad keeps randomly changing the zoom in/out ratio of our screens... that's always a treat. There are several more irritations with these machines, but these I've listed are the big ones based on our experience with them.
If not for the fact that we already bought, installed, registered, etc., the MS Office Suite for both machines, we would probably take them back and exchange them for something faster. Heck, thanks to these sluggish boxes and Windows 8, we're actually considering converting to Apple.
On the short list of good attributes, the machines seem to be put together well, the speakers put out decent sound, and the screen has good quality image.
