    No problems...so far

My HP laptop died completely after a little more than a year. It's being repaired but it's going to cost a lot. I decided to get this desktop as a backup PC. I think the laptop will now be my backup PC. One annoying thing with this machine is that instead of getting more than 100 mbs internet speed, I was getting less than half that. I found that there is something called "SmartByte Network Service" that needs to be disabled to get the full 100+ mbs. Just go to "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools\Services", then right-click on SmartByte Network Service and select "Stop". The service does restart itself on occasion, so just repeat to stop again.

    Great PC For Many Needs

    Posted .

My wife's PC had gotten pretty tired, so, it was time for a new one. We bought this at our local BestBuy along with a 27" monitor. We chose this particular desktop because it has an excellent processor (i5 8400), 12 GB of RAM, and a 1TB Seagate Firecuda HDD (a 7200 RPM drive). That by itself would make this a very nice computer for home, home office, and small-to-medium office use. The thing that really "clinched the deal" for us is the motherboard of the computer is equipped with a NVME port for a M.2 SSD. That allows for hard drive speeds at least two times faster than a SATA SSD. It took me a bit to install the M.2 and put the operating system on the NVME drive. But once completed, this is an extremely quick computer! Very, very nice! There are a number of settings that have to be "tweaked" to get the NVME SSD set just right, so, if you're not adept at doing that kind of "tweedling" I'd encourage you to have the Geek Squad perform the installation for you. But it is absolutely worth the effort. So, any "cons" about this computer. Not for what my wife wants to do with it (internet banking, home accounting, communicating with kids/grandkids/friends, and other "social" tasks). But, if you want to "game" with this PC and want to "build it up," be aware that the processor can not be overclocked (you need a K series i5 for that). The motherboard, too, is not right for overclocking. And, the included power supply is just too small to reliably power a demanding video card and other peripherals; the PSU is just a 290 Watt unit. You can game on the machine "as is," but for serious gamers I'd look at a different PC. This is a very nice computer for a home, home office, or small-to-medium office. If you add a NVME SSD it is about as quick as any you can find on the market. I can recommend this computer for the purposes described above. Cheers!

    Excellent desktop

    Posted .

I recently purchased this desktop to replace an Asus M32AD desktop that was having serious hardware problems. The Asus was 5 years old. The new computer has an i5 8th generation processor with 12MB RAM. My previous computer had an i7 7th generation processor with 12 MB RAM. I purchased a computer with an i5 8400 desktop because it is significantly less expensive then the i7 8th generation desktops. I had hoped that the upgraded i5 processor would be adequate for my needs. What I'm finding is that it's more than adequate. It is a significant improvement in processing speed over my previous i7 7th generation desktop. Very snappy response. Programs open very quickly. I do some photo editing with Photoshop CC. The i5 8400 is certainly up to the task. The only thing I have seen it struggle with is when rendering shake reduction filter, which takes some time to complete. Generally speaking, I'm very happy with the Dell Inspiron 3620-i5 desktop, and would highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't need a gaming machine or to edit videos.

    Dell Inspiron Purchase

    Posted .

I have always like Dell Computer products and I try to be a loyal shopper so when it came time to buy a new computer this one had a great price and all the guts inside I needed. The geek squad tried to save my old desktop, but it was 13 years old and slower than anything on the market. The geek squad had repaired it several times but the Hard drive finally failed. I guess I got my moneys worth out of it. I was able to save all my data to an external harddrive so was able to reload it all on the new Dell InSpiron desktop. I now own 4 Dell computers for myswelf and my business so everything is up and fast. Love BestBuy and the Geek Squad!

    Good machine, awful setup issues

    |
    Posted .

I like this unit now that it is up and working. However, I ran into problems during setup. I discovered that my Internet connection over 1GB wired Ethernet was 2-5Mbps. After hours of testing, I narrowed it down to two pre-installed services - Rivet Dynamic Bandwidth Management (CloudBees, Inc) and SmartByte Network Service (Rivet Networks). With these disabled, my Internet download speed is 175Mbps. I'm a retired S/W engineer with over 45 years experience and it took me a good deal of time to debug this and I still don't know why these caused the problem with this machine on my network. Given that uncertainty, I would be reluctant to recommend this to a friend.

just what to expect from Dell

    |

Easy setup, decent performance, easy access to driver updates. Unfortunately Dell must have warehouses full of 802.11agn wireless cards that they need to get rid of - can't think of any other reason to include this old slow tech with an 8th gen CPU. Setup a similar HP Pavilion 590-p0050 Desktop last week that was $50 less and included 802.11ac and 16GB of Intel Optane memory to act as a hard disk cache - made the 1TB HDD perform more like an SSD. And what's up with all these desktops not offering reasonably priced SSD options anyhow? (Oh yeah, warehouses full of HDDs!)

Nice machine but nagging reboot problem

    |
    Posted .

Given the i5 processor, 12 gb memory, and 1 tb drive this is a well equipped machine. I needed one immediately due to a HD crash on my regular laptop. Unfortunately, and especially when processing photos with Adobe Photoshop Elements the machine will suddenly lock up and then present the Blue Screen of Death. It reports something related to a DPC Watchdog Violation and then reboots. I've had this happen multiple times in an hour. My research indicates that there are many people having this problem and it has been going on for several years with no real solution. I did manage to find a video driver for the integrated video card that seemed to help the problem. Alas, it is still there. Troubleshooting has been hampered by Microsoft and Dell procedures that tell you how to step through a solution but I find that no such commands or instructions exist in my Windows 10 OS. I would not recommend this to a friend at this point, and if it does not get better I may have to take the machine back.

      Hi Carmine,

Thanks for your review. We're sorry to hear about the issues that your computer has been having. We'd recommend the following steps to help diagnose the Blue Screen Errors:

      1. At the desktop, click the Search the web and Windows box and type "problem reports".
      2. Select View all problem reports to view a list of errors that have occurred on your computer and possible solutions for them, such as updating drivers, flashing your system BIOS, or checking for updates to the software.
      3. Under the Source column, look for Windows and under Summary, look for Shut down unexpectedly.
      4. Right-click the line item and select Check for a solution.

We'd also suggest checking to make sure that your software and drivers are up to date on Dell's Product Page - https://dell.to/2mpf8IW.

    Dell - Inspiron Desktop

Dell - Inspiron Desktop - Intel Core i5 - 12GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive - Black With Silver Trim - Out of the box it was an easy setup. No issues so far and the CPU is much more quiet than my old Dell. I decided to purchase the 3 year warranty from Best Buy. I have purchased a few desktops from Dell now with no problems and they last for 6 years plus. I have also purchased several bigger ticket items from Best Buy because they are always very competitive on price and they are local if I was to run into issues. I am very pleased with both Dell and Best Buy!

Owned for 1.5 years when reviewed.

The version of Windows used on this PC is a challenge to someone who started in 1995 and has gone through the subsequent iterations, isn't a gamer, and still thinks '98 and XP were the best things since ... unix. The Dell itself is a lovely machine, but Windows is a mess. I can no longer tell what is an ad and what is the actual software when it boots up. After two years I am tired of trying to fight my way through stuff that isnt actually installed on the machine, but wants to be so that it can collect a monthly fee from me. So, in truth, what used to be fun about computers isnt there anymore, or it is, but is difficult to find. I used to be able to install and UNINSTALL stuff i wanted to try, but once installed it disappears into the maw of the Expanse where you can never find it.

    Good office computer

    |
    Posted .

Bought for an office computer, and it has handled everything that we can throw at it, but to be honest we don’t use too demanding software. Just the office suite but we do use a graphic design and editing software that is a very memory hog and this computer handles it like a pro. So far so good, not the most eye catching design and you wound confuse this computer for an Apple computer. But aside from the esthetics under the hood this computer is a real workhorse. Would definitely recommend and would buy again.

    Not a bad machine.

Quick - responsive - does what it needs to do. I purchased this machine as a simple home PC. I'm not a heavy duty gamer or an author. But it handles by game(s) and my word documents with ease. The negatives are (1) a limited number of USB ports (4 in the back and two up front), I would have liked at least two more in the back; and (2) the lack of expansion ports inside. There is only one. I have a video card that I would like to install, there is a port for it, but no power plug. A little disappointing and a trip to the Geek Squad to resolve.

I haven't owned a desktop in years and I only got one because I am in school and my laptop died. I'm not a big gamer (at least on a computers) so mainly my usage is restricted to internet research and typing up reports for school which this computer seems to handle without a problem. Computer seems fast, no problems getting on any websites or using any of the programs uploaded to the computer. I also haven't experienced any crashes, which is good considering I bought this in November. I will agree with others that the reboot for this computer is extremely long...but so far that's the only downside I see. Lastly, I paid around $499 for this but if I had to pay the full $600+ price then honestly I probably would have gone back to a laptop.

    Open Box Bonanza

I was looking for a laptop and ended up with a desktop. The dept mgr offered me a deal I could not refuse and I ended up with a great product. The computer is excellent except that the MS Edge leaves a lot to be desired. It allows bogus maintenance warning popups that I have to go to elaborate pains to eliminate so I can continue using Edge. Consequently, I use Firefox with DuckDuckGo and don't have the problems.

I purchased this computer for my parents. When I opened the case, I saw decent guts in this Dell, including a full size power supply and M.2 slot. I promptly bought a Samsung 970 and it installed Windows 10 in less than 7 minutes (I wanted a clean copy of Windows). I would definitely recommend this desktop. It doesn't have a dedicated video card, so no games or media creation, but for everything else, it can scream.

    Excellent PC for the Price

    Posted .

Need for purchase - Needed to upgrade from a Lenovo T520 laptop (i5 with 16GB ram and SSD) for video editing and file conversions. Reason for purchasing - Specs were more than what I needed at a great price. I couldn't justify the heavy price tag for the i7 version. Memory is 1x8 and 1x4 filling the 2 available slots. Out of the box, the system was sluggish due to bloatware installed. This is true across the board preinstalled system, not just Dell. After checking it out, I wiped the drive and did a fresh install and upgraded to Win 10 Pro (for me, not an additional cost because I transfer the Pro license from my retired Lenovo to the Dell). The computer was night and day in performance after the clean install. With the Lenovo, it would take around 2 hours to convert a dvd. Dell dropped this down to around 20 minutes. I decided to take advantage of the m.2 slot and added a Crucial P1 NVMe 500GB SSD. Using the software provided with the SSD, I cloned the 1TB SATA drive to the SSD and made it the OS drive. The only thing slowing this system down now is the physical limitations of my network. System boots in about 30 seconds. DVD converstion now takes about 7 minutes for a 2.5 hour movie. All in all, out of the box is decent for light users. Fresh Install of Windows, great for multi tasking with multiple programs open. With addition of M.2 SSD, powerhouse.

Initial set up was easy and straight forward. Down loading programs from CD's was fast and without problems. This computer is fast and response to commands is immediate. This computer came with McAfee security 30 day trial already installed - after 30 day trial, you pay. Other computers - not so. I have a dell windows 10 laptop that came with Windows Defender Security already installed - no costs involved and supported with windows security updates - no cost.

    A good mid-range desktop choice

    Posted .

I've owned this system for several months now.. it has held up well. I upgraded the RAM to 16 gigabytes then added a Samsung 970 EVO 500 GB NVMe SSD in the provided m.2 slot to replace the factory mechanical hard disk. As backup, I added a SATA SSD, just one I had laying around, for an extra 250 GB. I don't use mechanical hard drives because I live near a railroad: vibration causes them to fail. As a home pc or a mid-range workstation, this system is very fast: the Passmark benchmark on this particular i5 is over 11,000, way faster than a Ryzen 5 on another new system (2400g), which is still respectable at around 9,000. These budget desktops are still way faster than expensive i7, i5 and Ryzen laptops, the Passmarks are often double that of pricey laptops. Buy this, add more RAM and an SSD boot drive and you'll have a system that runs better than many Apple products costing a couple thousand dollars.

I've been using this computer for almost 2 months now and, overall, aside from photos being a bit slow to populate, it is pretty fast. Also, the disc drive is extremely flimsy and I wish there were a couple more USB ports. I have had no other issues, thus far. It starts right up and runs quietly.
