Beautiful hardward, easy to use platform but seems like unless you buy additional driver card, adding additional users is impossible. I tried adding users and even with the help of Dell support teams could not. I was then informed that if Dell advanced technical team had to fix the issue I would have to pay because the "limited" warranty that came with the product would not cover it. A disappointment from Dell for the cost of this machine. Thinking of returning the product. If someone has a solution, let me know, first it seems as if the additional user was possible, worked for a day, then, black screen and nothing can fix it, not even removing and again adding the user, rebooting computer etc....

      Hello Newbie,

We appreciate your review and we are sorry to see that Windows 10 is giving you trouble creating a secondary account for your computer. Perhaps these steps will help you:

      1. Select the Start button, then select Settings > Accounts > Family & other people > Add someone else to this PC.
      2. Enter a username, password, password hint, and then select Next.

To make the new account an administrator account:

      1. Select Start > Settings > Account > Family & other people (or Other people, if you're using Windows 10 Enterprise), and select Change account type.

      2. Under Account type, select Administrator > OK.

      3. Restart your machine and sign in with the new administrator account.

You can read the full article here - http://bit.ly/2H6ZVWE.

We hope these steps help you create the account that you need.

I haven't been using a desktop computer at home for the past 6 years. The last one I had is a self-assembled PC with an ancient Pentium D processor, which still chugging along back home. For home use, I was content on using an older laptop as a static desktop connected to my display and other stuff. SPECS and PERFORMANCE Then I got this Dell XPS 8920 desktop a month ago, and things changed a bit. Compared to the "laptop/desktop" setup which had a 4th gen. Core i7, NVIDIA GPU and 256GB SSD, this desktop showed some good signs of improvement. It is fast - with its 7th gen Kaby Lake Intel Core i7 CPU and 16GB DDR4 RAM most task works in a breeze. The storage part is quite interesting - it has a 1TB SATA HDD, but it is "turbocharged" by a 16GB Intel Optane memory unit connected via the M.2 slot. The idea is to get some part of the storage data (the OS I guess) to be cached in the Optane memory unit, and attain "almost" RAM-like performance in terms of read/write speed and latency. This is the first time I have used a system like this, and frankly the only difference I felt is that compared to the old-school HDD, the speed boost is very noticeable. Windows 10 boots up really fast, and large programs run quite smoothly once started. I ran some simulation software (MATLAB-like stuff) which are necessary for my work and found them to be quite fast compared to the work computer of my office (which is a Dell Optiplex, but a couple of years old). I can’t say anything from gaming perspective, since this one only has the Intel HD 630 graphics. But compared to the HP Spectre x360 laptop (which has a Kaby Lake i7 CPU, 16GB RAM, and NVMe SSD), which performance difference is not that huge - at least for my day-to-day usage. However, I get more confidence in running resource-intensive tasks on the Dell desktop compared to the HP laptop (obviously due to the incessant whining of the CPU fan in the laptop when it gets taxed). EXTERNAL DESIGN The casing design is very neat and I find the silver metal front end to be very cool looking. It has a minimalist feel to it, with the four USB ports, audio in/out ports, the SD card slot, and the DVD-burner blending quite perfectly. The overall dimension is quite small compared regular towers with similar hardware specs - its not mini-ATX and such, but I'm surprised to find a full ATX motherboard housed inside which chasis. INTERNAL DESIGN The most useful feature of a desktop that appeals to me is the scope of upgradability, and in that point the Dell XPS is solid. The chasis has a screw-less design to get to its innards - the left side panel is very easy to unlock, and then the power supply unit swings out of the way to get your hands on the motherboard/HDD parts. There's a standard HDD bay at the bottom that takes in regular sized internal HDDs via SATA connectors. All the PCI-express slots are also readily accessible along with the open RAM slots. The cooling fan is horizontally mounted on the top side which makes the motherboard even more easy to meddle with. All of these make it very easy to make an upgrade yourself - such as getting a dedicated graphics card, a second HDD, or add additional RAM in the future (even if you are not an expert). PERIPHERAL CONNECTIVITY In terms of ports and connectivity, the Dell XPS gets all the necessities covered. As I mentioned there's the 4 regular-sized USB 3.0 slots in the front, along with 4 more in the back. There's also a USB-C type port (also USB 3.0) which I feel is forward thinking. Two more USB 2.0 ports are there (apparently they are preferred ports to connect the included wired keyboard and mouse). There are 2 ports to connect your display, and an HDMI (which I'm using to connect my HDTV) and a DisplayPort. You also get your regular Gigabit Ethernet port and three more 3.5mm audio ports. You also get an Intel Wireless AC adapter for WiFi connection along with Bluetooth. PROBLEMS Now comes some of the downsides of desktop that I personally faced. I like to point out beforehand that I think most of them are software/driver related, and some of them have been mitigated now. Still I find them worthwhile to list them below: - Right after setup, the system started having hiccups: the system stopped responding a couple of times along with Intel Graphics driver crashes. The WiFi connection was very, very spotty with frequent drop-outs. Running diagnostics showed no hardware errors, so I went ahead and manually downloaded all the drivers from the Dell and reinstalled them (which was a bummer since getting online was difficult - I used another PC for that). This was NOT a good experience out of the box and needed time and a bit of troubleshooting experience. - Though most of the issues have been solved, the WiFi issue still persists albeit intermittently. So at last I contacted Dell support and they gave the obvious suggestion of getting an updated driver or getting the machine swapped out. I also found some forum posts with the same complain, and people have stated that the problem was still there even after getting a new machine. For now I'm keeping the machine and opted to get a wired connection to my router. - I get a rather weird error message during Windows shutdown from Google Backup & Sync (previously known as Google Drive), even after reinstalling a couple of times. This is not creating any particular problem - syncing is fine, but the thing is annoying to see. I didn't see any similar error in my other 4 machines (all running the same build of Windows 10), so I'm not sure what's the cause of it. This most probably has nothing to do with Dell, but I just wanted to mention it nonetheless. - The last one is a very minor issue - the placement of the USB ports on top of the DVD-burner tray. If you have USB cables dangling in the front, they may get caught up when you are opening/closing the optical drive tray. So overall, despite some (software) hiccups, the Dell XPS 8920 desktop is a very nice machine to use. I'm enjoying using it as my everyday home computer, and from the look and feel this is definitely seems like a piece of tech. Hopefully the WiFi issue gets fixed eventually which will make it almost perfect.

I recently picked up a Dell 8920, Core i7, Intel Optane hard drive powered desktop to keep in the home office. I would consider myself an expert user, taxing most systems with business performance software like Visio and running many things at one time – just so you have the context. At work, I have the pleasure of evaluating desktops and laptops for a Fortune 100 company – so my review of this draws from comparisons made from my previous experiences. First things first – I can’t believe computers still come with WIRED keyboards and mice! I was extremely disappointed with this fact. Know that you’ll need to purchase or use your existing wireless input devices if you want those features – and who doesn’t??!! Packaging was good – no issues/scratches with the appearance of the machine. Setup was easy. Just plugged in the WIRED keyboard and mouse, hooked my monitor up with my own HDMI cables (the desktop doesn’t have ANY cables except the power cord), and everything fired right up. One up and running, I did a few boot tests to get an average of 16 seconds to the logon screen (yes – you should use a password). The machine comes preloaded with a bunch of Dell utilities, support assistance, trial software, etc. That stuff just bloats the computer to me. Delete the AV and use Windows Defender and get rid of the other trial ware. Then, be smart about your surfing and what you click on. Next, I ALWAYS run a performance test on the systems I review. I use a product called Passmark Performance Test – you can use the free trial. As you can see in the picture attached, this machine scored a 3674. In perspective, the FASTEST PC test with Passmark scores around 9000, while a stock Microsoft Surface Pro 4 with and Core i5 and SSD that I have scores around 1300. So – this machine performs better that 79% of all machines out there. Not too bad – especially if you are the average home user that checks email, surfs the web, and tracks personal finances or something. The 2-8GB DDR4 SDRAM PC4-19200 Kingston memory chips scored well as does the Core i7-7700 processor. What hurts this machine is the graphics card and the ironically, the Optane boosted spinning disk. I say ironically because the Optane technology is supposed to be the next big thing in storage! It basically is supposed to act like a super-fast cache – and supposed to be intelligent and learns as you go. I could kinda see that after repeatedly launching the disk test – scores ranged from 1900 to 2600 within the tool. So not as fast as a dedicated SSD disk, but from a usability standpoint – I saw no issues. Another review complained about network card issues. I have not experienced drops – so I see no issues there on this machine. On a positive note, I do like all the ports available – HDMI, Display port, 3 audio ports, 7 USB 3.0 and 2 USB 2.0 ports, built in SD card slot, CD/DVD Burner. This computer has a lot going on! Overall – if you’re the average home user, or even a bit on the power user side – this machine should be enough horsepower for you. If you’re looking to game – you’ll need to choose something else with a faster hard drive and more powerful graphics card.

Packaging: This desktop computer came well packaged with excellent padding. The box itself came with handles for carrying and the keyboard, mouse, power cord, and paperwork were packaged separately inside the box in another sturdy box. The front of the desktop tower came protected with removable film. The top of the mouse was also protected with removable film. Tower: The design is sleek with rounded edges, but it is a tower so there is a typical size and shape to it. However, it weighed a lot less than I would have expected. My last tower was pretty heavy and this one was easier to move around. It wasn’t light-weight to the point where you might knock it over accidentally, but it was easier to carry. The silver finish looks like stainless steel and fits in well with my studio décor. Ports: One thing that I’ve always sought in a computer is enough ports to handle all of my devices. This computer does not disappoint there! On the front of the desktop, there are four 3.0 USB ports, an SD card reader, a headphone and a microphone port. On the back, there are two USB 2.0 ports, three more USB 3.0 ports, and one USB 3.1 port. (That makes 10 USB ports on this computer.) Also on the back, there is an Ethernet port, a USB 3.1 Type-C port, an HDMI display port, another HDMI port, and 3 more audio ports (these are front L/R surround sound, rear L/R surround sound, and center subwoofer). In addition, there is a DVD/CD drive on the front. Set-up: Set up was a breeze. The fastest I’ve ever encountered in a new PC. It took approximately 6 minutes. You answer the basic info such as your country, keyboard layout preference (I used United States), naming your computer (such as Dell XPS8920), attach to your network, and sign in to your Microsoft account. If you don’t have a Microsoft account, it lets you create one at that point. I wanted to use a new one, so I set up a new account. I chose an email name and password and I was done. I initially set this up by attaching it to my 55 inch Smart TV because I wasn’t sure what type of display port to expect. Since it ended up being an HDMI display port, I may end up keeping it on an extra 32 inch TV that I have instead of buying a new monitor. I did have to tweak the screen settings, but that took less than 15 seconds to get it set right for my TV. In case you run into this issue, you right click on your Desktop, choose “Intel Graphics Setting”. Then click on “Display”. Then click on “Maintain Display Setting”. Then “Apply”. If that doesn’t look right, try changing your display size. Mine started out at 1920 x 1080 (which is a 16:9 ratio, but was too large for my TV) so I changed it to 1600 x 900. That worked great! I could have lived with the other setting which was just slightly larger than my screen, but this fit exactly right, so it looks wonderful! You can also right-click on the desktop and choose Personalize, then play with whether you want your background on “Fit”, “Fill”, or something else. Software: The computer comes with Windows 10 loaded. In addition it has Microsoft Internet Explorer so you can immediately get online. It also comes with a one month trial version of Microsoft Office 365 and a one-year subscription to McAfee virus protection. Specs: It comes with a 1TB hard drive, 16GB RAM memory, Intel i7 7700 processor (4.2 processor speed), Bluetooth 4.2 for wireless transfer from another device such as a cell phone to your computer, built in SD card reader, and Intel HD Graphics card. Performance: I decided to put this computer to the ultimate test: an all-day session of processing large sized files of photography images. This computer is very fast and was able to handle all-day editing of large images without showing any lag in performance. Normally after too much work with graphics, my computer would slow down causing a need to reboot to refresh the memory in order to get up to speed again, but this computer never showed any signs of slowing even though I really put it to the test with hours of graphics processing. I would definitely recommend this computer to someone interested in gaming or heavy use of large images such as professional photography.

MarilynB, Wow, what an excellent overview of your new XPS Desktop device, I felt like I was right there with you setting everything up. We are so happy to hear all of your positive feedback about your new unit but most importantly the speed of set-up and processing programs and files. We know that over time you will continue to see the benefits of the Intel(R) Optane(TM) memory that your new tower comes with. As you continue to use your new XPS Desktop, Intel(R) Optane(TM) memory will automatically learn and accelerate your frequent tasks across the entire 1TB HDD. This should give you enough space to store all of your photos without having to worry about performance lags. It sounds like you have plenty of projects to keep this desktop unit busy so we wish you continued success and speed while you work! - Bryan Dell

I'm upgrading from a 530S so this XPS tower by Dell is like a piece of heaven. Packing: In the Dell box you get the tower, mouse, keyboard, power cord and a quick start guide. My old monitor was not hdmi so I decided to install it using my HDTV. It's fine for now but I'm not sure if I will buy a new monitor or just buy the adapter and use my old monitor. Setup: The quick guide is very easy to follow and I'm sure anyone can get it hooked up and powered in minutes. It took me a little longer because I was trying to work with a smaller desk and limited space. Performance: Expect a few minutes after you power on the XPS tower to let it load for the first time. I thought it was frozen and the minute I was about to power it off I saw it cycling. After it finish cycling/loading you will start getting prompts such as language and etc to finish the initial setup. You will also have a few updates to get you up to speed with the current Dell features. I spent a lot of time familiarizing myself with windows 10 because to be honest I've missed a few personal windows upgrades. Everything was lighting speed fast including browsing and doing different tasks. When I had my old computer I had many useless junk pre installed but I don't see much of that with this XPS desktop. I'm not great with computers but I had my friend who is great with computers and do web pages tell me that this computer can do so much because of the i7 processor and the 16gb ram. I'm planning on exploring more so I can do more with this desktop by Dell. The latch on the back makes it very easy to open and upgrade. Appeal: This desktop looks powerful and yes it's very powerful. The size is about average to most towers. Recommend: I will suggest purchasing a monitor that supports hdmi and also go wireless for the mouse and keyboard. Get yourself a few flash drives because you have plenty of USB ports. Adding users because it is easy and you can even add users with parental settings which is great if you have children accessing the computer. Conclusion: This is a great desktop by Dell. You are equipped with everything you need to get the basic tasks done but it has everything you need to do even bigger tasks. Don't forget to check out the games already installed.

This was very easy to setup and put to work immediately. It has good speed and is able to work with large databases without any problems. It is very quiet and does not produce much heat in the work area. The memory is more than adequate for all of the applications that I run and I am able to keep several open at the same time.

First thing I did with the system was to clone the included mechanical hard drive to a 1 TB Samsung SSD. Aside from that, I've not messed with it. Having spent so many years in IT I've looked at upping the RAM, but when I look at my usage tables I never come near needing more. The toolless function of the case is very nice, but I did remove the black plastic block that sits at the bottom between the swing out drive bays, and the power supply. When installed it is loose and serves no obvious function. I'm not a gamer so I can't speak to the graphics function, although most of the younger crowd will probably install a video card anyway. For my use it drives two 24" Viewsonic monitors fine, and I never have any problem running youtube or other video shorts. This desktop is a very high recommendation.

Ok - I bought the Dell when my HP Desktop died when motherboard failed - love HP's - but I figured I got my moneys worth after 6 years of reliable service. Before it died I bought a Crucial 1 TB solid state drive for the HP - it was like having a new machine. So I looked at both the HP & Dell desktops and decided on the Dell by comparing price, features performance - the Dell won hands down! I've had it now for about a month. Can't believe how quiet and fast it is with the Optaine built-in ssd. When I turn it on - it's up and running on the desktop in seconds. The speed reminds me of my iPhone SE - not bad at all!!! This Dell should last me many years with the latest technology built into it.

Banging, creaking, clicking, and tapping sounds are occasionally emitted from inside the desktop. I don’t know what’s causing those sounds. My previous computer was also a Dell XPS desktop that never made any sounds like that in the 11+ years I had it. I asked Geek Squad members about this and they didn’t know what could be causing the sounds. I’m a senior citizen and am too old to be lugging a desktop computer to and from Best Buy and my home to find out what’s causing those sounds. Also, the CD/DVD drive is awkward and cumbersome to use, so much so that it’s easy to scratch your CD’s and DVD’s. The CD/DVD drive on my previous Dell XPS desktop was much easier to use and didn’t scratch my CD’s and DVD’s. My Dell XPS 8920 Desktop came with Windows 10 Home Edition (64-bit), which I can't review separately and which is a whole other story. I rate it one star. It's a bloated, overcomplicated, unintuitive mess. I had my first Blue Screen of Death within a month, and all the software installed at the time came with the computer except for my Firefox and Pale Moon browsers and my Thunderbird email client. I would estimate that I don’t need or want about 99% of its features, but Microsoft keeps adding more with each Creators Update. The automatic screen shutoff and sleep modes stopped working after the Microsoft Fall Creators Update was installed. That update also disabled or deleted my Microsoft Windows Classic 3D Pinball Space Cadet Game application. I had to reinstall it, and when I did, it didn’t work the same, e.g., the pinball now hesitates when it rolls instead of rolling smoothly, and even when I turn the sound all the way down on my computer, it no longer diminishes the blasting sound effects of the application (I compensate by turning down the sound control on my speakers). Another repercussion of the Fall Creators Update was that all non-YouTube videos stopped working on my Pale Moon browser because it could no longer access the H.264 Video Codec (Pale Moon says there’s nothing they can do about this because it’s a Microsoft problem). This operating system regularly deletes ALL restore points for some unknown reason, so if you need to restore your computer to a previous restore point to undo unwanted system changes or fix Windows 10 issues, you can’t. If you want to boot Windows 10 in Safe Mode to try to resolve system issues, forget it because it’s too complicated to figure out how to do it. You have to constantly do searches to find anything, including how to open the panel used to create restore points and how to open the Control Panel, neither of which can be gotten to easily otherwise. Media players, even Windows Media Player, crash the computer so profoundly that the computer cannot be restarted and needs to be powered off to restart. Then, it takes several attempts to successfully restart the computer. Dozens of new error messages, messages that are too technical for most users to understand and some of which are critical, are logged every day to the event viewer. These error messages started from day one, including the critical ones. When I make changes to a file and do a save, the changes are not saved to the original file but to a virtual folder somewhere else on my hard drive. I noticed this when the third-party application that uses the file didn’t show the changes, so I had to hunt down the virtual folder to move the changed file back to its original folder. These are just a few of the many issues I’ve had with Windows 10 Home Edition. I don’t want to and shouldn’t have to spend more time going to Windows support forums, including Microsoft’s, to continually be trying to resolve issues on my computer. I have consulted several Windows support forums, including Microsoft’s (their forum is useless and worse than any of the independent Windows support forums), and found that other users were experiencing similar problems as mine, but no one, not even Microsoft, had any resolutions. I’ve worked with Windows 3.1, 95, 98, and XP, and those were a pleasure to work with compared to this operating system. The bottom line is that Windows 10 Home Edition is not a user-friendly operating system and is a nightmare. I’ve been a Microsoft Windows user from day one, but next time I buy a computer, I will seriously consider looking into getting an Apple computer.

Dear OLDGUY70 - Thanks for your review. We're sorry to hear about all of the troubles that you've been having. If you are still experiencing Blue Screen Errors we'd recommend the following:
      1. At the desktop, click the Search the web and Windows box and type "problem reports".
      2. Select View all problem reports to view a list of errors that have occurred on your computer and possible solutions for them, such as updating drivers, flashing your system BIOS, or checking for updates to the software.
      3. Under the Source column, look for Windows and under Summary, look for Shut down unexpectedly.
      4. Right-click the line item and select Check for a solution.

So far, so good! I've always loved Dell XPS computers. I had to purchase an Inspiron previously and wasn't happy with the speed or the ability to run multiple programs at one time. I was able to purchase this XPS system and love it! I purchased an extended warranty with the Geek Squad and they set everything up for me so it was ready to go once I got home.

I had been looking for a new computer for some time and became overwhelmed with the variety available. When I was finally ready to purchase this model was on sale at a great discount so I got more computer for my money. I have used Dell computers for years and have not been disappointed. This unit is fantastic! Very fast and set up was easy.

This computer replaced my 10 year old computer. I don't like Windows 10. My old computer ran good but, a little slow and would limit the cookies to about 150 per on-line session. With Windows 10 I get 750 to 800 cookies per session an loads of unwanted advertisements.

This computer is good for running virtual machines. I like the ability to expand the RAM to 64GB. I just wished this model included a SSD and came with Windows 10 Pro instead of the Home edition.

I was replacing a laptop that I used for work. I wanted something with more speed and better processing. This computer has given that to me. The set up was easy and I had the computer up and running to my needs within a very short time. I highly recommend it!
