Kathryn Bigelow has been a long time favorite director of mine as she has a unique talent for capturing tension while doing so through fantastic character dialogue. Point Break, Hurt Locker, And Zero Dark Thirty all prove this and Detroit is no exception.
Set in the late 60’s, Detroit explores the 1967 riots that I’m turn spurred a horrific hate crime perpetrated by racist police officers against the black community. This film pulls no punches and forces the audience to not only feel the experience of what the people in this story went through in real life, but to come to grips with how our society functioned then and the problems we STILL face today.
This was a film that didn’t get nearly enough recognition on its release but is a movie that everyone should watch. Available for a fantastic price and a powerful film to add to the collection. Comes with a host of special features and a free digital copy.

Kathryn Bigelow directs John Boyega in a stunningly shot story of disturbing police brutality and civil unrest in 1960s Detroit. In the days where unarmed people are being executed, Detroit travels back in time with this movie. Revisiting a shocking “incident” that took place amid five days of rioting in the summer of 1967, Detroit is a provocative period piece made all the more alarming by its stark contemporary relevance. More than 40 people died during the so-called “Detroit rebellion”, most of them African Americans, many shot by the police or national guardsmen. In attempting to unpack “the anatomy of an uprising”, Bigelow focuses in on a harrowing tragedy that has become emblematic of the racial tensions still haunting the US.

Directed by Katherine Bigelow ( Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty) This is a gritty telling of actual events that took place back in the 1960's. It has a an outstanding cast with John Boyega ( Star Wars films), Will Poulter ( Maze Runner Films and Voyage of the Dawn Trader), Algee Smith, Jason Smith, and John Krazinski.
As I mentioned earlier this is a difficult film to watch. It does show the awful racism and inequality that existed then, and still does exist now - just not as bad as it was then.
A must watch!

Difficult But A Relevent Truth

This is not an easy film to sit through, but the truth it tells must not be forgotten. Racial profiling justified by bigotry left unchecked and given a license to kill results in a history of horrors against humanity. This film was executed so well that it is near impossible to watch, but if we turn away from witnessing the beast, we will remain powerless to stop it. You only have to turn on broadcast news to realize that this is true.

I purchased the movie because I live in Detroit when it happened.. My office was on Grand Circus PArk off from Woodward Ave. When the roit started I was in my office and could hear the gunfire outside of the office. I stopped going to the office when the Army National Gusrd took over. I enjoyed the movie.

The acting is excellent and the story is believable. Unfortunately that's all this movie does: tells the story of one series of events of one group of people during a difficult time in US history, while somehow not capturing the feel of the time. It felt like the person who wrote the story didn't live in Detroit.

I didn't know a lot about this movie, the first time I saw it. I definitely didn't know it was based on a true story. This movie is gut-wrenching, but, that's what I love about it. It makes you feel and it makes you think. Definitely check this out if you havent.

I remember when this was in the theaters but never saw any previews for it. Then found out Kathryn was the director who did the Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty so I did a blind buy of this blu ray release. Good movie. Based on true events. Recommended

I caught this movie during one of the deal of the day sales that Best Buy was having. It was a hard watch because it details a dark spot in America’s history but it’s a film that all should see to be informed. No regrets with this purchase

Terrific story that holds your attention from beginning to end. A story that was important to tell, and was told in such a way as to have hopefully had a positive influence with those who saw it.

Being based on actual events is what makes this film more disturbing. Very well acted and executed. Can be intense at times, but an appropriate mood for this type of film.
