Great fun, outdated in only the right ways.

I purchased this product as soon as I saw it was available, as I am a massive fan of the show, particularly the Peter Capaldi era, and had for a long time been trying to get into the classic series. If I were a newcomer to the show, the season premiere, Robot, wouldn’t have been a perfect introduction, but a suitable one nonetheless, creating an excitement and humor that’s so perfectly 70s.
Of course, being from the 70s, the production is outdated and the monsters can come across as cheesy.
Despite the visuals being outdated, it really surprised me just how progressive the storylines were. Sarah Jane is a perfectly feminist character that would fit perfectly in the modern age of television. Her and Tom Baker have such a great chemistry that still holds up nearly fifty years later as one of television’s most iconic pairings.

This is a complete collection of episodes from Tom Baker's first season as Doctor Who. The video has been up-converted to HD. It does not and will never look as good as true HD, but the picture looks better here than it ever has before. If you like Tom Baker's run as Doctor Who, I highly recommend picking this set up while you can. Here's why...
You remember that caveat I mentioned earlier? The caveat to this set is that it has two faulty discs, specifically with Disc 3 (The Sontaran Experiment) and Disc 5 (Revenge of the Cybermen). Disc 3 has a sound issue, and Disc 5 has a frame issue.
The good news is that you can get replacement discs from the BBC free of charge by emailing them at [email protected] with your proof of purchase.
I recommend picking this set up now because the BBC has said that they have no plans to re-release this set in the future. Prices on the secondary market have already started to rise. It's possible that you will get another chance at this set at some point in the future, but it won't be any time soon, and there still won't be any guarantees that other problems won't plague the next set.
All that said, if you're on the fence, get this set while you can. This is Doctor Who at its finest, and looking the best it is ever likely to.

This set has all the features of the DVDs with new ones added and fits in a package that sits tiny on the shelf. The video picture is improved to current quality standards and even some of the audio is brought up to grade.

Fantastic Release of Classic Who in a season set!

This is the best this season's episodes have ever looked (and it's quite possible that it's the best they ever will be able look to given the fact that their source material is 1970's interlaced SD videotape footage). HUGE step up from the DVDs - with the additional PAL resolution factored into the upscale and better video compression. And also keeping in mind that the previous DVD releases of the individual stories alone being around $25-$30 per serial, the price point of this Blu-ray season set is unbeatable (especially with it being on sale at the moment). Not to mention that all extras previously released on those DVD sets are included here along with brand new bonus features.
So, while plot lines and acting of this era of Doctor Who may be a bit cheesy and the fact that this Blu-ray is sourced from (wondrously restored) SD material, fans of this classic show should jump at the chance to pick this set up, ESPECIALLY if you do not already own the previous DVD releases!

It's great to have classic Doctor Who on blu-ray and Tom Baker is a legend. The set is great, but be warned that it does not look like what is pictured above.

Tom Baker is arguably the most beloved actor to play the role of Doctor Who. This release on Blu-ray of his complete first season is a must-have for fans. The video quality on Blu-ray of this old classic series is excellent. The 6 disc set also contains a plethora of special features on every disc, including previously released and all new special features. The episodes Ark in Space and Genesis of the Daleks also include 5.1 Surround Sound mixes in addition to the 2.0 "dual mono" stereo audio mixes for all episodes. This is a great set and I hope that they continue to restore and release more classic Doctor Who season sets on Blu-ray.
