Customers are enthusiastic about the fun gameplay and cool story mode in Dragon Ball Xenoverse. Many also praise the fighting mechanics, noting the unique and competitive aspects of the combat system. However, some players found the controls challenging and require time to master, while others mentioned difficulty spikes and inconsistent online functionality. Overall, the positive feedback on the core gameplay outweighs the concerns regarding controls, difficulty, and online features.

This game starts off by letting you interactively relive some critical moments in Dragon Ball history. But then something causes historical events to be altered. Trunks calls upon Shenron to send him a warrior who can help to fix the timeline. Guess what? That's you. =)
In this game, you get to create your own character (Majin, Saiyan, Human, Namekian, or Freiza race) and customize his/her appearance, equipment, etc. along the way. If you've enjoyed previous Dragon Ball fighting games, you'll probably enjoy this one a lot. It's essentially the same thing but built out a lot more.

The game is fun and original while still sticking to the original source material. It even throws in those non-canon movies and series into the fray.
You are allowed to create your own character out of 4 races: humans, sayans, frieza's race, and namekian. While the characters physical features are limited the clothes they ware can be customized mixed and matched and at time the color can be varied.
Once you have created your character you are thrown into the main story where you meet future Trunks and explains the situation and why you were summoned. The story takes you through key points in DBZ history and lets you experience first hand what its like to fight next to Goku, Vegeta, and all the other z fighters.
Aside from the main story you have parallel quests. These are missions that fill in the missing gaps in the main story, take you on "what if" tangents, and allows you to collect some awesome items and dragon balls. One of the best features in the game is that you are allowed to play the parallel quests with your friends in case you ever hit a tough mission.
The online functionality is not the best and could have been done way better. It took a while before my friends and I figured out how to set up in game parties and invites. This wont effect the overall gameplay though as once it is figured out it is quite simple.
I recommend this game to any DBZ fan who hasnt been inticed to buy a dbz game in the past few years. It is a nice refreshing take on a franchise which had stalled for a few releases.

This game features an original story line in the dragon ball universe and uses the premise of time travel to put your very own created character as the center of the story.
The controls take a little getting used to but once you master them this game is a blast. At it's heart its a fighting game with some RPG elements, there are tons of unlockable characters, skills, items, and outfit sets to collect that greatly enhance the replay factor of this game.
The only negative thing I can say about it is the servers leave much to be desired on the PS4 version, constant disconnects and such but once this is resolved it's easily the best dragon ball game ever created.
You can play with 3 friends online in cooperative missions, or do 3v3, 2v2, or 1v1 matches online. You can also create and participate in user-generated tournaments.
There are 5 playable races, Human, Saiyan, Majin, Namekian, and Changelings/Frieza's race all with different stats/attributes that you can customize.
Highly recommend, 5 stars. If you love DBZ get this game, If you want a fun fighting game you can sink numerous hours into give this game a shot!

The game starts with an interesting premise. Bad guys are going back in time and changing history. You create a character and tackle missions. The problem is, right now, the server seems to be unstable as I've been kicked off too often. Combat is fun at first, but as you get to higher levels, becomes cheap as the computer opponents can do things that you're not allowed. For instance, I can't use my ultimate evade while I'm getting hit, but isn't that the whole point of "ultimate" evade? But, mid combo, my opponents will break my combo and then start unleashing on me. Targeting in combat is wonky, as you're really not supposed to fight more than one person at a time. Whoops, because later missions will have you fighting 3 or usually more people at a time.
That being said, these are the technical negatives. From an overall package, despite the technical issues and flaws, I'm having a really fun time playing through iconic DBZ battles, using super moves from my childhood fave characters.
So in summary, if you like DBZ, this is probably the best DBZ game that's come out in America to date. If you're not a DBZ fan, then the mediocre combat and finnicky online will probably mean you should wait until the price drops.

This game was for my son and he is a huge DBZ fan. You get to customize your character and the story has an interesting twist to the story line that involves jumping in and out of critical battles that could affect the timeline.
The controls can be a bit difficult at the beginning, but once you get use to them, they flying becomes easier.

Whether or not to recommend this game is rather difficult, because it depends on what you're looking for. If you just want an action-packed romp through childhood nostalgia, Dragonball Xenoverse will serve you well. Ultimately this game is competent and you can get many hours of enjoyment out of it, but it does have some noticeable flaws that dirty a game with a lot of potential. I'll list some positive and negatives about each key feature I can think of.
Create-A-Character
+ Being able to create your own avatar is very enjoyable, and you can customize everything about them, from what race and gender they are, to how tall or wide they are. You also distribute stat points to determine how much health, ki, and stamina the character has, as well as how powerful each type of attack (basic, strike, ki) is.
+ Large variety of clothing types that you can mix and match (some can be custom colored, some cannot).
+ Huge list of skills and special attacks for you to use.
- Character features, such as hair, eyes, etc. are somewhat limited. Hairs in particular have very few unique styles; many are based off existing characters.
- A potential annoyance comes from how much effort is required to respec stats and redo appearance options (more on that later).
Story Mode
The story mode of this game revolves around you. You're a member of the Time Patrollers, who make sure time doesn't get messed up. Obviously, the plot dictates that it does, and you get thrown into the DBZ storyline at certain points.
+ Hits all of the key arcs, has some unique twists. It's nothing mind-blowing, but this is DBZ, so you kind of expect that.
- Rather short; probably 6-7 hours worth, max. I wouldn't buy this game if all you're interested in is the story.
Gameplay
You'll be doing one of two things in this game; exploring the hub, known as Toki Toki City, or fighting things. Exploring the hub lets you buy items and clothes, talk to NPCs, and so on. But the whole core of this game is in the latter aspect, and it's what you'll be doing 90% of the time. When it comes to fighting things, you have a bit of variety in how you go about it. First, there's story mode, as you'd expect. Second, there are what are kind of like 'side-missions' known as Parallel Quests.
Parallel Quests can be done offline with NPCs (or by yourself), or online with up to 2 other players. They are how a large number of clothing and special items, as well as special attacks, end up being obtained. They are entirely co-op; you and everyone else work towards the main goal of the mission, which differs depending on what it is. There are basically two varieties; beat all enemies and collect the dragonballs while beating enemies.
Another important aspect of Parallel Quests are that they have conditions for unlocking special events that trigger an 'Ultimate Finish'. For example, you might have to beat a certain character before another character, or the special event won't trigger, which may lock you out of a certain skill unlock reward. Parallel Quests can be completed any number of times however, and there are a few reasons to do so, whether it be ranking or... farming items/skills.
Yes, everything you can receive from a Parallel Quest is based on a roll of the dice. On the one hand, this gives the quests some replayability, and on the other, you might find this frustrating when you really want a certain skill or clothing item and find yourself farming the quest for hours without it dropping because you were unlucky. It didn't bother me much as someone who plays a lot of RPGs and Roguelikes, but I can certainly see how it could get on a person's nerves.
Another thing you find in the Parallel Quests are the Dragon Balls. Yes, you can summon Shenron and make a wish, which is the only way to obtain a few of the many unlockables in this game. However, it is also the only way to respec your character's stat points, or change their physical appearance/voice set. Since collecting the Dragon Balls can take an hour or two even when you know the most efficient way to 'farm' them, it can be very annoying if you find out your build sucks and want to redo it.
+ RNG aspect and special events give some decent replayability to the game.
+ Gives a much-needed co-op 'PvE' option where you and a couple other guys can just beat up on Cell or something.
+ Getting a new skill or item to try for a little while as you get more makes you feel less pressured and overwhelmed.
- RNG aspect can also cause frustration through repetition or for people who dislike the thought of farming.
- Dragon Balls, and therefore character respec and appearance edit, are locked behind RNG. Since your only other option is to level up a new character, this can be a problem.
There are also a number of PvP options, including 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 player matches, 1v1 ranked matches, and Endless Battle, which is similar to any console fighting game player lobby system, where two players fight, and everyone else in the room (up to 6 players total) spectate. There is also a (as of this review) unreleased World Tournament mode. Unfortunately, this is easily the weakest aspect of the game for me.
I'll put it simply; PvP is broken. Even after bug fixes to some of the worst offenders, playing PvP in this game is rarely satisfying, in part due to the flexibility of CaC, letting you mix and match the strongest skills, and in part due to some questionable design choices for some skills and Z-Souls (special ability items basically). In some respects, due to the way these function, if you want to PvP, you may be required to use specific skills if you want to be able to play at all. I'll give you an example.
Super Saiyan. In this game, Super Saiyan lets you use all Super and Ultimate attacks that cost Ki for free. Normally, these cost 1 and 3 Ki bars respectively. The downside is that Super Saiyan will slowly-but-constantly drain your Ki while active, but during this time, you'll be able to fire off way more Ultimate attacks than you could have otherwise. So if someone goes Super Saiyan and starts spamming an Ultimate with super armor (which prevents flinching/interrupting the attack), you are going to die quickly and can't do much about it. There are counter skills, such as Change the Future, which can let you deal with this strategy to some extent. But there are some more powerful setups you can't do anything about.
To be fair, these issues could be patched, but that's the state of the game right now. And when you do find an opponent who doesn't use a 'win-button' strategy (which is rare), it is pretty fun.
+ Modes do exactly what you'd expect and want the game to.
+ Combat in general is deep due to the number of skills and unique movement options.
- PvP is hard to enjoy due to a few overpowered skills, attacks, and Z-Souls.
Sound
There's not much to say here, the sound effects are classic and the soundtrack is memorable and well done.
+ It's good.
---
tl;dr - Buy if you're a DBZ fan, don't mind RNG unlockables, and either don't care about PvP or are okay with DBZ-levels of power that goes on within it. This is a good, but flawed, game.

First and foremost, if you have no idea what Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, or Dragon Ball GT is then you will absolutely be confused playing this game. This game does not tell the series' story in a way that would make sense to anyone who hasn't seen the series before. But considering HOW LONG the franchise has been around, in both games and anime, you most likely already know everything there is to know with this series and its' story.
That all being said, this game is seriously amazing and a love-letter to fans of a series that even has its' creator stunned on how much people love it. (Toriyama INTENTIONALLY made characters like The Great Saiyaman and Majin Buu almost annoyingly silly in one of his many attempts to end his own series.)
Anyway, as soon as you hit "Game Start", you are thrown into the game. Future Trunks uses the Dragon Balls to summon a warrior to help him fix the DBZ storyline and that warrior, is you! From there you create your own character using one of five races. Male or Female! You can pick from Majin Buu's race, Saiyans, Earthling, Namekian (Just Male here. But feel free to create your own Super Mega Kami Guru.), and last but not least Frieza's clan. You start with very basic attacks and clothes but the hubworld of Toki Toki City quickly opens up to you. This is NOT a straightforward DBZ fighting game. There is so much content in this game that if you are a fan of the series, then I cannot recommend this game enough. Seeing the alternated events such as Raditz not getting killed by the Special Beam Cannon, or Vegeta and Nappa going Great Ape and overpowering Goku, or Captain Ginyu switching bodies with Vegeta!
Graphics look gorgeous but nothing that screams "Next-Gen" but everything looks clean, bright, and crips. Load times are quick and the framerate looks solid. Sort of like next-gen versions of TellTale games. They won't push the console to the limits, but they do seem to be the best/smoothest versions of the game.
Incredibly deep, easy controls, and 100% required for any Dragon Ball fan. Enjoy!

This game is pretty good. I like the fact that they put a twist on the regular story line. Almost as if it was a new series call dragon ball time patrol or something.. Graphics are not too bad but does fell like they haven't taking use of the ps4 full potential. The controls are ok but find myself punching air because my character is facing the wrong way. Also wish the fighting world was larger. I Kept running into that invisible wall.overall game is good for hardcore dbz fan.

This is without a doubt the DBZ game we have all been waiting for. Not only has it met my expectations but even exceeded them. The combat is a ton of fun and the character creation options are vast. Honestly it is pretty similar to Destiny so take that for what it's worth. My only complaint is the online functionality is completely broken at launch. You can still play offline just fine, but playing with others is incredibly difficult at the moment.

I got the day 1 edition but the box didn't have the DLC code. I tried contacting Bandai Namco for help but haven't had any luck. The game play is fast and smooth on the PS4. New create a character and story mode makes the game different than the others DB Z games. You have to play through parts of the story mode before you can jump into online battle. The server wasn't working for me when I tried to play online.

The Dragonball games have been subpar but Dragon Ball Xenoverse puts the series back where it should be. It lacks in the mechanics department but the makes up with visuals and an original and intriguing story arcs. Besides the shallow combat system and ridiculously swollen enemy health bar, the game is worth hours of play with your favorite DBZ characters.

The last few entry's for Dragon Ball Z games have been a bit disappointing. But now it's back in time for a new gen and along it comes a whole new story and character created by you and brings back the fun an exciting gameplay based off of Battle of Z. This has been one of the better DBZ games of the past couple years and way worth checking out!

It's a pretty good fighting game if you are already familiar with and a fan of the DBZ universe. The game's story and elements require you to already be familiar with DBZ to understand what is happening and why certain plot points are significant. PvP is okay, if a bit cheesy. The story and RPG elements are pretty fun.

Xenoverse is a good game, and a fantastic Dragon Ball game. The problem with recent Dragon Ball games for me has been that they have been essentially telling the story over and over. This game has a nice way of having a different storyline, and at the same time the story we all know and love. The ability to build up you character RPG style and interact with the characters of the universe is fantastic as well. The fighting mechanics are also pretty good as well. I would say a step up on the Budokai Tenkaichi series. The only issues are the dialogue scenes could be better, and I would have like a little more appearance customization when creating your character. Overall a 4-star game and probably 5-stars if you are a DBZ fan.

I am very happy with this purchase. I am at level 10 and there is so much to do in the game. You can buy items to heal yourself, revive yourself, and pick different attributes to fit your play-style such as more health, melee attacks, long range ki blasts attacks, etc. You put the points in to where you see fit. I recommend to not balance the stats out. Leveling in this game is a must so don't play at a low level fighting high levels. It takes a while to get used to the controls. The games graphics and gameplay are A++ but the story could use a little work. I give the story a B because it's still great to see the DB story. The Day One Edition comes with Super Saiyan Vegeta who just totally wrecks stuff.
