This is a very good movie about an important time in England's fight against Germany in World War II. The blu-ray version is stunning.

Dunkirk is not a war movie; it's a survival film

Dunkirk is a great film, as long as you don't go into it, as my parents did, expecting a standard World War II story of heroism and valor in the face of a powerful evil force. Dunkirk is not a war movie; it's a survival film. And that's not to say I don't personally enjoy war movies, because I absolutely do. But Dunkirk is something else, something different. It's almost akin to an arthouse flick, but created with the budget and scale of a traditional summer blockbuster. Christopher Nolan, the director, does an excellent job of promoting a sense of anxiety and dread in the mind of the viewer. Oh boy, does he really do an excellent job of this! But Nolan does not make you care for the characters as would another director, such as Spielberg or the Coen brothers. That's not the point of this movie, or really any of Nolan's other films (with Interstellar perhaps being the sole exception). The point of the film is the atmosphere, the tension, the visceral FEELING of being trapped alongside hundreds of thousands of your fellow soldiers on the beaches of Dunkirk. It's the seemingly fruitless struggle against an unspeakable, creeping darkness that cannot be stopped, much less seen or understood. Dunkirk is not about a war; it's about the sensation of war. And if you go into the film with this in mind, you will find yourself appreciating Dunkirk much more than you otherwise would.

Great movie from a historical AND cinematic point

Saw this movie on the “big screen” at the theater and enjoyed it. Nevertheless, the 4K version at home really looked great with the improved contrast, deep blacks and nice surround sound ! This is actually a gray/cloudy movie with certain scenes such as the air battles being bathed in glorious color. I viewed both the 2K (1080p) version and the 4K version in back-to-back evenings. Both were excellent cinematically and sound-wise, but of course 4K trumps 2K. What an inspiring piece of history ! So glad this 2017 version was made to depict it. Highly recommended for those that have a historical interest.

    Another Great Christopher Nolan Film!

Christopher Nolan takes us through the harrowing experience of the survivors at Dunkirk - just little before the entry of America in WW2. Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Cilian Murphy, and Tom Hardy turn in top-shelf performances. The rest of the cast are relative unknowns, but who also turn in great performances. The story takes place on the shores of Dunkirk, the ships at sea who are there to rescue them, and the skies above from the RAF pilots who risked their lives for their countrymen below. It's the story of how hundreds of civilian volunteers in their own boats came forth to rescue thousands of men. Mr. Nolan takes us from edge-of-your-seat suspense as in his early films, to moments of reflection.

Dunkirk is a great film with amazing soundtrack and keeps you on edge with a great story about heroism from not just the soldiers at war but with the citizens as well. Not so gloomy or violent like other films, but I’m fine with that as this can be a film to just pop in and see a gripping story.

his movie has very little dialogue, it’s more of an illustration or “watch and see what happens” kind of movie.” It’s graphic, hardcore, and brutal with lots of carnage. This movie demonstrates the intense brutality of war and the (basic human will to survive) at all costs. The movie is a masterpiece and all veterans will appreciate it. The only problem I had with this movie is the ending. The movie ends way to fast, leaving you with lots of questions about the outcome of the main character, otherwise, it’s absolutely amazing!

I have friends that have complained about this film saying that it is too slow and there is not much dialog / character developement. I agree with the last 2 statements, but this film does exactly what it is supposed to do, puts you right in the action of the war. Not to mention the IMAX scenes (many) were amazing. The detail is breathtaking. The audio (while not Atmos) was still very loud and aggressive. Great demo disc for your home theatre.

The mostly fictionalized screenplay has plenty to recommend it as a historical/action drama. The characters are only loosely based on the real participants but overall it captures the plight of England's efforts to save their army off the shores of Dunkirk. The varying aspect ratio works well on large screens (IMAX to 2.35:1). The time frame shifts events of key characters may be off putting to some but the narrative as such rewards those than can grasp director Nolan's style.

Rather different than the usual types. This movie is great, has amazing FUNNY lines, fast action, really sets a nice pace. The sound is great, can't say enough good things about the sound, it has what you expect for the money you spend on a disk of this magnitude, the money they spent was well placed. You get high quality content. The CGI is so realistic you forget its CGI and just fall into the story and lose yourself in the emotion and staging of the drama and action.

As Christopher Nolan always uses film for his movies, the details and colors always look stunning in 4K. The time jumps in the film can be a little hard to keep up with as you experience the different interconnected stories, but still a good film.

Dunkirk, written, directed, and produced by Christopher Nolan, is the remarkable World War ll story of the evacuation of the British army from France. It is arguably one of the best war movies of all time. The Steelbook Blu-ray version captures Dunkirk's outstanding visual and sound effects giving the viewer an expansive and all encompassing cinematic experience.

Movies serve the purpose of reminding us of important times in history, and educating a younger generation who didn't live through these times. My father, who in his 80s did live through WWII, remembers that there was another movie based on the events at Dunkirk--but I didn't know and I imagine most of the people who saw and loved Dunkirk. Keep history alive and learn from its lessons!

I was kinda meh when I heard Nolan’s next movie was gonna be WW2 film. We have pleeeeeenty of those. I’m also an idiot. It’s beautiful to look at, well acted, sound design and practical effects are so good. Classic Nolan time shift storytelling craziness. All great, but the score steals the show. Tension the whole way. So good. Watch it too loud on your OLED of choice.

Its 1940, and Allied soldiers in France are surrounded and forced onto the beach at Dunkirk. Amid the chaos, several English soldiers await some kind of transport back to England; at one point, they discover an abandoned, beached boat and hide inside to await high tide. Meanwhile, private English citizens who own boats have volunteered to cross the channel and pick up as many soldiers as they can carry.

Although Nolan did it again and made a great movie I feel like DunKirk is stretched out too long. And that's mainly due to the source material. In reality the battle was over quickly. It wasn't some stretched out battle that took days. But Nolan pays respect to the soldiers that stood their ground and gave their life to do what they knew was right.

Purchased this disc as a gift for someone else, because I already had it myself, and I will gladly encourage anyone reading this to purchase it for yourselves. “Dunkirk” was shot on a combination of IMAX and 65mm film, which shows up with pristine clarity on Blu-ray. A truly immersive film that everyone should see!

One of the best movie I saw. Everything felt real and the stakes of everything happening keep you on the edge of your seat. The attention to detail on the audio is bar none some of the best I heard in a movie. The cinematographic take is amazing as each take feel really important. Highly recommended to watch it!

This is recommended for showing off 4k and hdr. The visuals are incredible. It's like you're at the beaches or flying in the sky. Christopher Nolan shot much if this movie in IMAX. It is awe inspiring. I can't say that the movie is as good as it's visuals. It's a survival story but I never felt the the tension or desperation of their need to escape. It was just kind of boring.
