Customers are saying

Customers value the Home Cinema 5040UB's exceptional picture quality, brightness, and ease of setup. Many appreciate the lens shift capabilities and quiet operation, finding it a great value for the price. However, some customers note the projector's larger size and limitations with HDR performance. Overall, the positive feedback on image quality and user-friendliness outweighs the concerns about size and HDR.

We just moved into a new house and really wanted to do a theatre room but didn't think we had enough room and also didn't know if the room could be dark enough. We did the Magnolia Home consult he was able to show us some options in different price ranges that would be good, better and best. This projector looks amazing--its just like we are at the movies! We have watched a blu ray, played the wii U and PS4 and watched our regular cable on it--we couldn't be happier!

I have been looking to set up my home theater for over 3-4 months now. And i have been spending time in identifying the right components. While looking for projector i came across Epson 5040 UB and 5040 UBE. The reviewed unanimously were high with very positive user stories and experiences. I purchased this during thanksgiving and best buy also gave me a price match. We have been using this for over 3 weeks now and are extremely happy with the quality of picture. I am not discussing any technical specifications during my review as you can find them all over the web. My best experience relates to the ease of setting up the projector. This was my first projector but going through the AV settings was a breeze. The ability to adjust the picture size and the move picture up/down or sideways with the moving lens is excellent. The projector is also 3D compatible which we have not tested yet. I did not go for UBE as i did not feel the need of online streaming HD / 4K movies over the web and spending $300 extra for it

This is a generally excellent projector, producing a gorgeous, bright image. And it produces the best 3D I've seen yet. But, there are a couple caveats that buyers ought to be aware of... First, even though it supports 4K signals and HDR, it will not do 4K HDR at 60fps. The HDR features are limited to 4K30 and below (which does include 1080p60). The HDMI chip on the projector has a maximum bandwidth of 10 Mbps, which is lower than the 18 Mbps required to achieve 4K HDR at 60fps. Second, even though it supports HDR, it really isn't quite bright enough to do it justice. When projecting an HDR image, overall brightness drops quite a bit, to the point where the image is too dim by default. You can put the projector into a different HDR mode to get a brighter image, but then you lose the benefit of HDR in the first place. Even though this projector is generally pretty bright, true HDR support would really require a projector that can put out a lot more light -- 10,000 lumens or more. Third, currently the Xbox One S won't do 4K HDR with the projector. It's the Xbox's fault, and supposedly a software fix is coming. But for right now you can't watch HDR in 4K if you use the Xbox One S as your source. Other sources seem to work fine, though (as long as they keep 4K output under 30 fps). But overall this really is a great projector. It is amazing. I do love it!

I have been looking for a projector for a long time. I came across the 5040 in an article that was actually about the 4000. I then researched the 5040. It had all the things I wanted and more- power zoom, keystone correction, 4k up, 3d, up to 300in screen, 2500Lumens, 1,000,000/1 contrast, and more pro corections then I would ever need. I set it up a few weeks after it arrived. I had to order a heavy duty ceiling mount since the projector weighs over 30lbs. It took me about 10min to plug it in and connect the wires and have a picture that was fantastic right out of the box, with out calibration. After some calibration the picture was out of this world. And this was only 1080, I set up a 4k blue ray and picture was even better. You can have some ambient light in room but best is almost dark room ie: theater. I currently have on a 90in screen, did try it on an out door screen that is 17ft and was like we were at a drive-in. All I can say is have had for a month and enjoyed every minute of use. If we get more nice weather will have plenty of drive-ins in my back yard!

Please read before buying! (Purchaed from Best Buy) 5 stars on picture, 4 stars customer service, 1 star on quality. The fact I used it for 6 weeks under less use than I would a normal TV in a nice cool room before it failed, I cannot give it a full 5 stars overall. I have to take yet another day off of work (in addition to the many days I took off of work receiving all my other home theater items) to receive the replacement. Also, they are sending me a refurbished unit in trade of my 6 week old unit and I've had bad experiences with other refurbished products with disgusting animal hair, human hair, scratches, filth on them. I hate getting something older and used when I paid for brand new. I would understand if it was a year old, but 6 weeks? It hasn't even had time to let dust settle on it. I wasn't happy with the $2,000.00 hold on my charge card when I am going on vacation a few days after my replacement is due to arrive. Otherwise, their customer service is OK. They're sending a refurbished one right away. Today is Thursday and they say I'll have the replacement by Monday or Tuesday. However it's going to be a long weekend having to watch my tiny 65" LCD (be forewarned, this thing will make you feel like every other TV in your house is a computer monitor) As far as the picture. I sit roughly 13 feet from a 120" projection in a fully light managed room, onto a ceiling paint screen, and I cannot see the pixels. The quality and color is as good, if not better than a theater. It's a nice looking unit and easily ceiling mounted. It's pretty quiet when in the 2 low power consumption modes. The 3rd mode with unfettered power consumption is pretty loud without much benefit. It's just a hair brighter. HDR isn’t that great on this unit because it’s not bright enough and really makes the image difficult to watch. It’s kind of like an iPad with the brightness turned way down. I prefer watching without HDR. The motorized lens shifting is great. It has a lot of range shifting up/down/left/right and can adjust/compensate for not being perfectly level with its lense adjustments. All in all, great picture for the money but I have never had something in this price range just cr@p out before, ever (add to that, it’s failed multiple times). I hope this isn't an indication of the remainder of my 2 year warranty (update, looks like it will be). That being said, (edit here, I once said “go ahead and buy the unit, now I’m not so sure). Maybe you'll never have an issue and I usually never do. It seems others have reliable units. I guess my luck just ran out. Update: Received my REFURBISHED unit and the picture it is projecting is unacceptable. When I pulled it from the box the lens shutter was open! I was assured that the refurbished units went through many quality tests before they are sent out. I went through all possible color adjustments and it's still projecting red in one of the corners. I've had it with this. I've been trying to get my home theater in working order for 7 weeks now and if it's not one thing it's another and this is just one more thing to irritate me. I just want to watch a movie in my finished theater and I'll be going onto the 3rd projector in 7 weeks. Update #2 I got a NEW unit overnight and all is well for now. I would have given this unit 5 stars had I not had to return 2 units within 7 weeks and make arrangements to receive a replacement unit twice during my working hours, having to disconnect and remount multiple times, make phone calls and go through the usual routine of plugging cables in various components and sources only to finally have an American get on the phone after 45 minutes, take 1 look at the picture I sent and say "Yeah that's a bad unit". At that time I asked to be sent a new unit and he said he would try. He delivered on my request for a new one so that made me happier. So time will tell. Maybe I'll get through the rest of my 2 year warranty without an issue. ANOTHER UPDATE! My NEW unit that I received in mid June succumbed to the same failure as the first projector. It’s early December 4th today so it made it roughly 5 months under moderate use. I hadn’t turned it on for about a week and I wanted to watch a movie tonight and the thing is fried again, it won’t turn on, flashing blue lights. I don’t know what to do at this point. I’m going to have to switch out the unit AGAIN. I’ll have to battle them for another NEW (not refurbished) unit, AGAIN! Or do I just ask for a refund and spend more money on a different more trustworthy brand? So annoyed right now... I really like everything else about the projector it just kills me that it doesn’t seem likely to last more than a few months as I will be going on my 4TH projector in about 7 months?! That’s just ridiculous... I’m really a fair person. I’m hard to get worked up. I would have LOVED to give this 5 stars, I just can’t due to multiple unit failures. If the next replacement last me 10 years, the best rating I could give would be 3 stars because of the quality.

    Definite upgrade over 1080 projector

My previous projector was a Panasonic AE7000, and the Epson 5040 is worth the upgrade. It is brighter with better colors and contrast. The 4k enhancement does improve perceived resolution of 1080 broadcast and Blu-ray material. The 4k Netflix and Amazon Prime shows look great as do the 4k Blu-ray movies (played on a Phillips 4k player). It also does a great job with 3D movies.

Got this installed without any issue, the setup was easy and straight-forward. Using this with XBox1S and DirecTV (C61 mini receiver) input sources. The clarity, brightness, HDR, and color are all amazing! Viewed Magnificent 7 4K movie, the picture was noticeably better than the accompanying Blu-ray version. I'm very please with my purchase. Note: When switching satellite channels, I could hear the lens adjusting and a momentary lapse of not seeing a picture. My Samsung does the same thing but not quite the same duration.

    AMAZING PROJECTOR

I have owned an Epson Powerlite 1080P projector for over 7 years and decided that it was time to upgrade to a new projector. The reviews for the Epson 5040ub have all been fantastic and I wanted 3d capability since I have been buying 3d versions of the movies that we want to own. Plus this projector also has 4K capability. My projector is mounted on a 10 foot ceiling with a 14" rod extension. The 5040ub projector is large and heavy and two of us struggled to get it attached to the mount. Don't try it by yourself! When I finally powered the projector up my wife and I were blown away by the picture. Colors are bright and vivid and really pop. Even in a bright room the picture is great. although you do need to change to color mode to a brighter setting. Our first viewing of a 3d movie (Avatar) convinced us that this is an amazing projector, especially for one that costs under $3000 or even more. The projector only comes in white which might put some buyers off but it does blend in better with our ceiling. This is a fantastic projector and provides everything and more than I was hoping for.

What can I add that hasn't already been said? This PJ is fantastic. The colors are rich, even in a fully lit room, though I have it in a light controlled theater room. I can't distinguish the difference between the "faux 4k" feature and real 4k. I have not tested the 3d feature but I'm sure it's as good as any other active 3d. Epson hit a home run with this baby.

Wow. This projector is awesome. Paired with 135 aeon cinegray 3d screen and it's perfect. Purchased ube version and it's flawless so far. Read other reviews on how big unit is and i didn't think it was too big, does help that it's white it blends in with our drop ceiling. We now have a theatre in our home couldn't be happier. This is my first projector for my home theater. I did alot ow research at the time and decided on this projector and cannot say how pleased I am with it. It has many adjustment points with motorized shift. You can be quite off from center and still project a square image easily. Very bright and colors are vibrant!

Astounding image & product quality. Easy to setup & manage. Bulb life could be better, but it's on-par with other mfrs. Also wish updating firmware was a bit easier (without using USB) since it's not easy to get to once mounted. So far, so good.

I did the research, read countless reviews, along with getting familiar with all of the proper jargon. I kept coming back to this projector, but it wasn't released yet. I pre ordered it and I am extremely pleased. This picture is amazing on 4K movies, reg blu ray, reg HD channels, football games, non HD channels. My biggest surprise was that I could watch with the light on!!! I even purchased a inexpensive 125" elite spectrum screen with a 1.1 gain. Picture quality great!! Don't spend $8k for a 4K projector when you would prob have to have it side by side to even tell a difference. This projector is that good. Highly recommended, especially at that price!!

The Epson 5040 UB produces such an incredible 4K enhanced image quality that you will not believe it is from a projector. We have this wall mounted in our theater room and with the zoom and lens shift feature, we are projecting a 200 inch diagonal screen with simply unbelievable clarity, detail and depth of color. Anyone considering a 75 inch or larger 4K TV should absolutely look at this projector if you want an even larger image with incredible image quality and a great price! Hands down I recommend this projector!!

This is one of my most favorite projectors that I have owned. Works great when paired with the Screen Innovations Slate screen. Picture is much brighter and more vivid with this screen. The projector's Wireless HDMI worked great and made less cable clutter. However, there are a few glitches with the Wireless HDMI. Sometimes it would cut out the image, and I had to restart the projector. When using my Roku or Xbox to watch Netflix, the screen goes black when loading into Netflix, and sometimes when starting a show, I needed to pause the show for the Projector to display the image. Other than that, this projector is perfect for 4K content.

This projector is so bright and clear!! Awesome 1080p picture with faux 4K but the projector does except signals from a 4K player as well as HDR compatible. In some shoot outs people couldn't tell the difference between a real 4K Sony projector and this model.
