Customers are positive about the fun gameplay, interesting story, and the wide variety of weapons available. Many enjoyed the large map size, numerous side quests, and the unique targeting system. However, some found the difficulty level challenging, particularly at higher levels. A few players also expressed disappointment with the level cap.

One of the best games I have ever played.

I'm honestly not sure why people say this game is hard to play and/or boring. If you think it's hard to play you may need to rethink the way you have your character set up or how often you heal, there are stimpaks nearly everywhere, and plenty of stuff to sell that you get from just wandering around to buy them with. And I must admit, you actually need to think sometimes about how you set/level your character up. If you think it's boring, you probably shouldn't be playing an RPG, as it requires talking to people and exploring, not just constantly shooting and jumping on things.
That aside, Fallout 3 is a great game for the RPG fan, and maybe a decent one for the FPS fan. If you have no skill at FPS's, that's what the VATS system is, it's basically a strategic way to shoot people. It pauses the game and allows you to select what target and where you would like to shoot/hit/throw grenade at. The VATS system is limited so sometimes it will come down to blind fire or beating something to death, which is where the FPS player will shine, even though the controls are a little sluggish compared to standard FPS's.
There's plenty of skills to customize your character type, the brutish guy that beats things to death with a sledge hammer or the stealthy sniper that kills things from afar, or maybe the guy that likes to shoot things in the face with an automatic shotgun. There's tons of weapons and clothing/armor to use, and there are a bunch of miscellaneous items to collect/decorate your one of two ownable houses.
Karma is an interesting system, if you steal something your karma goes down, if you give water to a thirsty hobo, your karma goes up. It can be affected by little things like that or by big things like blowing up an entire town or saving the world.
There are a lot of main missions and tons of side quests, plus places to explore that don't have missions associated with them but have their own little stories to discover and learn if you're interested.
Fallout 3 is a great game, especially for the RPGer, but don't expect to pick it up and be able to just run around shooting at everything you see in a post-apocoliptic environment.

Long long RPG

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I knew little about the fallout series before I played this game. Since Fallout series was popular and this game received great reviews , I decided to give it a shot. After finishing it (60+ hrs w/o DLCs; 80+ hrs with all 5 DLCs), here is what I thought.
**********PROS.**********
LONG, JUST VERY LONG AND ENTERTAINING RPG: These days when most of the games (even RPGs) are 10hrs, it was a rejuvenating experience to play this long RPG. Just like other RPGs and games in general, while some elements were redundant, it has plenty of variety to offer as you progress in the game. Even after playing 50+ hrs (not even touching the awesome DLCs), there were always exciting and unexpected events in the game. Great job Bathesda, great job.
CHOICES, CHOICES, CHOICES: In this game, just like Mass Effect and Bioshock, you will have to make choices, lots and lots of them. And each choice you make will have major consequence on the outcome your missions and game all together. Again wonderful job. There will be time you will make a choice, finish the mission, get the results and out of curiosity replay the same mission again (assuming you saved before the mission), to see what outcome you might have gotten if you were to make a different choice.
KARMA METER: The choices you make will give you extremely positive to extremely negative karma. And different karma will change behavior of people of wasteland towards you allowing you to do different missions, unlock different achievements and different rewards. Depending on the choices you make, you will turn certain groups into your friends and others into enemies. Words simply can’t describe the experience. You have to play it get the feel for what I am saying.
OPEN WORLD: Yes you are free to roam in wasteland and go wherever you want to go. I personally loved it. While to progress in the story you have to go to specific places on the map. You can take whatever route you can take and complete whichever missions you like.
SURPRISES WHILE ROAMING IN OPEN WORLD: This was one of the strongest aspect of the game. While roaming in open world and exploring new areas and wastleland towns, you never know what you are going to encounter. While a lot of open world games have the same type of enemies and areas in open world, this game will introduce to plenty of varieties. Can’t tell more without spoiling.
RPG ELEMENT: As you defeat enemies, complete missions, solve conflicts and progress through game, you gain experience and level up. Leveling up will allow you to enhance your traits and unique abilities (for example, your aiming, your melee power, unique abilities like your conversation skills, atomic explosion when you are damaged enough etc.)
COMBAT MECHANICS: The game is First Person Shooter for most part, but it has unique combat mechanic. While playing FPS, you can freeze time so do speak and target specific enemies part for higher damage of decapitate them. This can make game very strategic as some enemies faster or bigger than others and sometime enemies can have devastating weapons. So if you use this time freezing and aiming trait well you can target specific body parts or their weapons and slow them down.
VARIETY IN ENEMIES: A lot of long games becoming boring in short time as they have the same enemies over and over again. But that is not the case for this game. As you explore the wastleland, you will come across plenty of different enemies ranging from thugs and little creatures to heavily armored soldiers and super mutants. LOVED IT JUST LOVED IT.
DECENT STORY: While it is not the strongest aspect of the game, it does have decent story with somewhat of a suspense and oh depending on the choices you make, story and ending changes.
DIALOGUE TREE AND GOOD VOICE ACTING: If you played Mass Effect than you know what I am referring to. While talking to different characters, you can choose what you want to tell them. You can be charismatic and friendly or you can be rude. You choose. Again what you choose affects the end result of the game. To me what was nice was these dialogue were well designed and voice acting of hundreds of people you talk to was much better than what I expected. This truly makes gaming experience more rewarding.
(IF YOU HAVE GOTY)
FIVE DLCS = 10+ MORE HOURS OF GAMEPLAY: The five DLCs will add to the main story of the game, but in addition it will take to you to a hidden slave town, alient space ship, pre-nuclear explosion war era and on a mystic island. I loved all five of them especially the island and story+ dlcs.
INCREASE LEVEL CAP TO 30. If you don’t have these dlcs, you can level up only to lv 20, but if you have these dlcs you can level up all the way up to lv 30. That means more traits, more choices and more unique powers.
******************CONS******************
GLITCHES: This is simply unacceptable. There are glitches in the game that can make you go crazy. For example for me I completed a mission and I didn’t get achievement unlocked for that particular mission. Fortunately for 360 version a lot of these are fixed by patches. Nevertheless you will still encounter some.
LEVEL CAP: I also didn’t like you can only level up 20 or 30 depending on which version you have. I wish they would at least let you level up to lv 50 and get all the traits possible.
****************CONCLUSION*****************
I truly wish they would have worked hard to fix the glitches, but contrary to those glitches this game has a lot to offer. 80+ hr of gameplay paid me back every single cent I spent to buy this game. I highly recommend this game to RPG and FPS lovers. If you can get GOTY (9.5/10), if not then at least give normal edition a shot (9/10).

Fallout 3 is Oblivion mixed with Bioshock : D

This game was made by the creators from Oblivion. Both games are very similar but there are some big changes too. And Oblivion was great but this game beats it by a long shot. Bioshock is another great game, that especially had a good story and very eerie graphics.
Story:
I do not want to ruin too much so i will keep it brief. In the beginning of the game you get to decide your stats and what you look like. You live through your childhood with your father since your, well... i won't ruin that. Anyway, your father eventually leaves YOU AND THE VAULT BEHIND!! So you decide to leave the vault and look for your dad or you don't, its your choice. I don't want to ruin anymore of it so get the game if you want to learn more.
Gameplay:
Well, you can either be in a first person or third person view when playing. Personally the first person is easier when fighting. Controls are not to confusing and will not take long to get used to. There is a special mode which makes this game more interesting then the average first person shooter. The mode is called VATS. This allows you to freeze time and pick specific parts on the body to shoot at. You can do this by the amount of Action Points you have available. It is very cool and i love using it.
What makes this game fun:
The games graphics make it seem very much real. Especially when you have HDTV it looks just breathtaking. There are many different types of guns which keeps the game fresh. Also the map size of this game is huge. It is unbelievable how much detail was put into this game. What also keeps you from getting bored of this game is all of these secret locations and weapons. You will become addicted and will want to find the best of the best weapons and armor in the game. A another thing that keeps this game int resting is Bad and Good Karma which determines what kind of person you are. Will people praise you or will everyone be against you. This game will keep you occupied for hours, im guessing over 100 hours.

Intense post-apocolyptic RPG. After a nuclear war with Red China in the 1950s, the united states lay in ruins.
Large selection of weapons including melee, small guns(bullet firing guns), big guns(explosives and such like my personal favorite, the mini-nuke), and energy weapons(lazers/plasma).
Enemies get boring after beating the game. Enemies include sadistic raiders, super mutants, rogue robots, and mutated animals. Radiation adds some challenge, consume or take too many rads and you'll get radiation sickness.
Difficulty modes allow you to chose how hard the gameplay and enemies are.
Targeting system lets you pause combat, and target specific limbs or spots on your enemies body, including their weapons to disarm them.
Lack of vehicles makes getting around harder, but fast travel allows you to go straight to a destination you've been to already.
Large area to explore, over 100 hours of entertainment. Hard to get bored of.
Beautifull graphics on an HD tv or monitor, 720p or greater.
Some common glitches and bugs can get annoying, be sure to save often.

It’s not perfect by any means, but Fallout 3 is easily one of the best games I have played this year. As you may have noticed, many people on here have compared Fallout to Oblivion. Some of these comparisons have valid points but it is unfair to judge a game just because it is similar to others. Games speak for themselves, regardless of what they are based on.
One of the best features of Fallout is the sheer scale of the game. Right off the bat, you are immersed into a huge realm to explore and grow in. From the storyline and side quests, to questions of morality and character development, you have the choice to go where you want and do what you want. Simply put, the interaction level is this game is incredibly deep. This aspect of the game also provides an almost unparalleled level of replay potential.
Another great feature of Fallout is the theme. As I play, I am constantly reminded of old sci-fi movies from the 60’s. There are also numerous “Easter Eggs” hidden throughout the game that reference things outside the game. Bethesda (the game developer) even put their office building among the ruins in the wasteland. You’ll just have to find the others for yourself.
As for the style of game play, Fallout 3 is not a pure first person shooter. At the same time, Fallout 3 isn’t a pure RPG either. It is more of a merger of the two, combining elements of both. I personally find the resulting product to be excellent. From my experience, most of the complaints about the game play itself are coming from players that have no patience. Even if you are sneaking, the speed at which you are moving is important to you being detected. You have to move slowly to get that optimal sneak attack; so no…the enemy does not always no where you are.
The VATS system is one of the best fighting systems I’ve used in a game. The system is simply a lot of fun and very easy to use. VATS is a targeting system that lets you use action points to target specific body parts. This lets to cripple an enemy’s leg and slow them down, reduce their accuracy, or even destroy the weapon they are using. Besides being a great system, VATS also is very reminiscent of the original Fallout games which makes it even better.
Overall, Fallout 3 is a great game. If you take your time with it, you can put countless hours into a character yet still be excited to start a completely new one. Hands down, this is one of the best single-player games in my collection. Highly recommended.

Well folks, Bethesda has done it again. Fallout 3 is hands down one of the best games of 2008, being knocked from the top by Gears of War 2 (in my opinion). In a long line of great games, Fallout 3 will be at the top with Oblivion, Mass Effect, Call of Duty, Gears of War, and many others as one of the legends. I mean, who can't like an open-world game where your every decision affects the gameplay? The weapons are somewhat unique for the most part. The main story is pretty short, but the amount and length of the sidequests more than make up for that. The graphics are amazing, with every color, the landscape, buildings, etc being richly detailed. Every second, minute, and hour I spent playing were not a waste at all. This game is a must have for everybody.

If you played Oblivion, then you will be at home with the controls and options in Fallout 3.
This game seems to use quite a bit of the game engine from Oblivion, The same slurping/gurgle sounds of Blood Sacks when opened, excpet in this game it is a bag of body parts. When you bump into skeletons it makes the controler vibrate but no damage is done to your character.
It's pretty much free form, you can do the quests in any order you like. You're not held to the main quest and if you do something ahead of the timeline in a quest it will update that particular quest even if it is not set as you active quest.
There are some glitches in the game though. So, be sure to save often so you can continue without much fuss if your character gets stuck or the system freezes while loading a screen.
I'm not a first person shooter type of person so I cannot compare this to other first person shooters. But I think this a good mix of RPG and a first person shooter.
I would suggest spending the extra money and getting the Game of theYear edition so that you have ALL of the add-ons and I hear that with the GOTY edition you can get to level 30 instead of just level 20 in this version of the game.
I basically got this for free with my Best Buy Rewards and will be getting the GOTY edition before getting New Vegas.
Solid game for the money. You can start with this one and then upgrade later if you want & keep all your stuff.
My one dislike is having to go back to someplace that you can safely store the stuff you pickup. This game uses weight to limit what you can carry. So, you have to keep unloading stuff so that you can get new stuff. Gets old sometimes spending the time to do this rather than fighting or exploring.
Thankfully Meds either have no weight or very litle. Ammuniton has NO weight, whether it is a Nuke, Missle, Flamer Fuel, Laser Cartridges, or bullets. Grenades and Mines do have weight but it's like a half point or one point each.
P.S. If you're looking for a Gore factor, there is a level up perk that will intensify the blood & guts splater of combat.

One of the Greatest RPGs Made

Fallout 3 is one of the greatest RPGs made, the graphics are outstanding, the gameplay is great enough to keep you glued to the seat, large D.C. area to explorer, and the available DLC. The main story in Fallout 3 is interesting, though I found it to be somewhat short, but thats what the DLC is for, adding more hours of gameplay and fun. The enemies you face in the wasteland range from super mutants, ghouls, raiders, deathclaws and some others. The bugs I found in Fallout 3 mainly happens during battle, I experienced some freeze ups, slowdown, and while in VATS my character would totally miss the target, even at a 95% hit chance, but these bugs I easily ignored and still enjoyed the experience. Fallout 3 also offers replay value, will you be the good son? or the evil son? Either case, if you have not played this game, you should play it and go out and buy it.

this game has lived up to the hype so far.. such a massive game is so impressive words really do not give justice... this is a must buy. the graphics are beautiful, the gameplay is fun.. good pace.. some may be turned off by the complicated start of the game.. its not linear and some may not be willing to invest the time it can take to get going.. there are hints of oblivion but these are merely subtle and it does not feel at all like its predecessor.. there is sooo much dialogue.. you can tell some work went into this masterpiece! choose your own path! the weapons are sweet, a new targeting system allows you to pick where you want to inflict damage.. that part doesnt get old.. pick up the strategy guide to get started out strong

Graphics: Breathtaking 9/10
Sound: Great – 8.5/10
Gameplay: Spectacular – 9.5/10
Replay Value – High (for a single player only game) 9/10
Overall – Near Perfect 9.5/10
Please note: I have never played any prior Fallout Titles, and this is from a n00b prospective.
Graphics: Breathtaking 9/10
The graphics are make you look twice – When you first exit the vault and see the landscape, you think to yourself “what next”? The graphic interface, use of PiP Boy and the movements really show that Bethesda took the time and care to make this well worth your hard earned money.
Sound: Great – 8.5/10
The sounds, music, effects, and voices take you immediately into the game. The time specific music, the radio channels, and the voice acting are all A+. The reason for the slightly lower mark is the repetitiveness of the radio, some of the sound effects, but overall, a lot of time, and thought, went into putting in effective music, voice acting and emphasis, and surrounding wasteland. The best, yet simplistic feeling is when you first turn on this gam for the first time, and all you hear is the old 50’s radio sparking on with the tube. Well done.
Gameplay: Spectacular – 9.5/10
Smooth animations, huge world design, and interactive and smart A.I. This game can be streamlined to do the main quest, or you can help the citizens of wasteland in their personal affairs. The single player game takes a lot of chances, but succeeds, in making the player make hard choices and customizing the game to their own path. Some find out too late that it is important to make hard choices to choose which attributes to build up. This aspect alone warrants multiple play times.
Some critics and players are commenting on the ending (no spoiler), but I must say that for the amount of customization a person can have in this game, it goes right along with the story.
Replay Value – High (for a single player only game) 9/10
Even without multiplayer, this game has replay value with the limitless ways you can play as – via good, bad, neutral, thief, etc. This did not feel like an RPG to me, and was well done to the point that I am on my second playthrough.
Overall – Near Perfect 9.5/10
I am not a fan of RPG’s, nor long drawn out games over 30+ hours, but I was swept away in this post apocalyptic wasteland. This holiday season is rough with the shear amount of great games, and this is definitely in the Top 5 for contention of game of the year.
This would normally be a game I would run from, but I rented it, and then bought it. It is so engrossing that others will want to watch you play and help you make those hard choices.
The game is not perfect, but close to. The story flows, as with the action, and it makes you feel as if you were there with your character trying to survive.
It has elements taken from genres such as RPG, puzzlers, action-adventures, but is not pigeonholed into this experience and to say it is an RPG is gives too little credit. This is an experience that should be played by any hardcore gamer.

When I first bought Fallout 3 it was incredibly addiciting. The game has amazing visuals, is very exciting gameplay, has a great story and I found 80% of the games missions to be challenging. However the game ends when you complete the main quest, also you can't level up past level 20 which I found makes it difficult to face some enemies. Still the game is the best RPG of 2008 and the DLC is also incredible. I would recomend this game to anyone fans of the series, anyone who enjoys RPG's or shooters, and anyone who is looking for a new vidoegame experience.

This is hands down one of the best games I have ever played for the 360. The whole karma point system is a great idea. You can be an evil, good, or neutral character, all of which have their ups and downs. For instance, some NPC's will join you only if you are evil, some only if your are good etc etc. If you are expecting this to be another Halo game then look elsewhere. There are a ton of enemies, but nothing like a non stop action game like Halo. The sheer vastness of the "Capital Wasteland" is enough to keep you playing for hours on end. (About 60-80 hours give or take to explore EVERYTHING). This game, I can only gripe about a couple little things. Easy and normal modes are just a tad too easy after you get the hang of things. Once you catch onto everything, towards the end of the game (after about 40-50 hours of gametime) youll be killing everything with a little too much ease, which can take away from the challenge a little. Also, some of the NPC's who can follow you (and especially a large one in particular who you may encounter later in the storyline) can be quite idiotic at times. Either taking the long way around drops or steps, or thinking they're Rambo and run into a group of enemies only to get themselves killed. Also, and this doesnt happen very often, you can get stuck in tight quarters with no way of getting out, and are forced to load at an earlier saved game. So SAVE OFTEN. This IS a long game, where, if explored fully, can consume at least 60 hours of your time. Overall, I give this game a 9/10. You will not be disappointed.

The game is a blast from the begining. The environment is cool. It kinda reminds me of a Mad Max movie. I liked the VATS targeting system. The enemies you fight get a little boring after awhile. I liked all the side quests especially the on where the dude had a tree growing out of his head very funny. There is also new DLC on Xbox live. I played through it and was fun as well. Fallout 3 is one of the most amazing games ever. Very addicting! The most awesome thing about this game is V.A.T.S. mode. It is a slow motion mode in which you kill the monsters or whoever you want to. In this game you can be good and be bad. Pickpocket people and put grenades in them to explode them. Help out people and gain karma.Whatever you feel like doing. Whats so cool about this game is that you can do whatever you want whenever you want. The game takes place in D.C. and WOW it looks real. You can travel to the lincoln memorial, the capital building, the pentagon, the momunent, go underground through subway metros, i mean it has everything! The game map is huge but you can fast travel to locations youve discovered so you dont have to walk over there. In Fallout 3 you will encounter the GOVERNMENT! called the Enclave. These guys are bad and try to destroy in any way!!!!! No problem, not when you have a missile launcher, minigun, flamethrower, assault rifles, any weapon. You can also get assistants in the game. Such as a dog, a special trained soldier from "THE BROTHERHOOD OF STEEL" or my favorite, a super mutant called Fawkes. This game is just amazing, i play it everyday. It is worth buying it, so i highly recommend getting this game!!

I like practically everything about this game. If you didn't know already, it was produced by the same people who brought you Oblivion. I liked that game, but enjoyed this one much more. It is obvious that they learned from their previous errors with Oblivion in order to enhance the RPG experience with Fallout 3. So much time can be spent doing side missions that one nearly forgets about the main story. Unlike Oblivion, every place that you discover has a story behind it. You character is completely malleable and simple choices that will determine you fate will stem from the the very first choices you make as a kid. The story, once completed, is deep and full of twists and turns. I am nearly beating it for the second time...the second experience was completely different than the first. Love this game and highly recommend it to any true RPG fan.

This is an excellent game overall. The amount of content is simply incredible. You will literally get 100 hours of game play out of this game, probably a little more. The weapons in conjunction with the VATS system are excellent as well.
The AI is fantastic and the ability to saveanywhere in the game is what every game should do.
The graphics are phenominal on the PC and 360 not so good on the PS3. Plus the PC and 360 versions will get downloadable content, the PS3 will not.

This game is a complete waste of time in a GOOD way. You can spend hours playing and not realize it. It has a great story line. I love all the choices and how you have the freedom to explore. And the game flows differently based on how you play (Good or Evil).
The only negative I can come up with is that the fighting can become repetitive in VATS. If they could shore up the 3rd person version of the game that would be nice too.
Overall, a must buy for Xbox 360 owners.

Fallout 3 is the story of the character that you choose to create and there quest to leave a vault that they have lived in there entire life so far, to find your father who has also just left the vault. Along the way you will find more and more out about your family. You are inside the vault in the first place because nuclear war has taken place and you were lead to believe that there was nothing left outside. However, when you come out of the vault there is a lot going on.
Throughout the game you have endless side quest that can take hundreds of hours to complete as well as you have the choice of how you want to complete them. You can be a very good person, evil, or somewhere in between. In the end your choices will change the storyline of the game as you go. Unlike Oblivion a game also made by Bestheda, the makers of Fallout 3 this game can actually end. You will know when it's going to end so if you wanted to complete any side quest you should do this before ending the game, because you will have to start again or revert to an old save point.
Many people ask if this is just Oblivion with guns. The one thing that I will say is a difference is that unlike Oblivion when you level up in Fallout your enemies do not. So you will become stronger then most of your enemies by the end of the game. Where in Oblivion they leveled up with you. I would also say the tone of this game is very different as it's much more dark. Graphically it also differs as the world is very dull with a lot of browns and blacks.
Overall this game is a 5 out of 5 and is a must for whatever system you bought it on. The only negative to this game is that it is very addictive and you might not stop playing once you've started.

bethesda is one of those companies that since Morrowind, makes me think of games with a higher set of standards than most game companies. they put alot of detail into their worlds (morrowind, oblivion, fallout 3) and make games that actually make you feel part of it. the graphics are amazing and the detail is awe inspiring. very few times does a game company take pride in their creations like this company. i will admit i was as impressed with oblivion as i was with morrowind but it was still a great game to say the least, and fallout 3 follows in the tradition of what to expect.
fallout 3 is one of few RPG games on the new consoles unfortunatly.
i do have a few gripes about the PS3 version not getting the expansions and have yet to find a reason why, and there could be more weopons in the game (which the expansions added but not on ps3). those are the only issues i have with the ps3 version, but hopefully if they do not come out for download they will make a game of the year edition like oblivion and morrowind.
all and all this game is very good, and their are plently of choises to make and you can go anywhere you want. the game gives you the freedom to make your character, assign your skills, and other customization options. all in all it is a great game to add to your collection, if you havent played it i would recommend buying this game, however as a warning, the game does feature gore and limbs and heads do come off when you shoot them so if you are reading this as a parent, you may want to keep that in mind, also there are some curse words in the game as well, the f word to be precise.
