I know it’s rather inexpensive, but I’ve tried other ones that I have been able to pick up for less than $100, and they are much sharper than this lens. However, I will say that I absolutely love this lens. It works perfectly with my Sony Nex F3, I think that’s what camera I have. The sharpness is a bit hazy when you are at f/1.8-2.8, but after that, the image quality has blown me away.

Great entry level lens!

An adorable, quality, entry level 50mm lens. I have used it quite a bit now and very much prefer it over yet kit lens I got with my camera, to the point that I will use it even when it's less convenient than my variable zoom lens.

It'll get you those nice and blurry backgrounds, for photo I think the lens is worth the price, it does however tend to hunt for focus a bit and it is a little loud, but it should be fine for photo. i probably wouldn't recommend this for video though.

||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.If you were looking for a cheap native prime for your Sony a7xx camera well here it is. Unfortunately it is a very mediocre lens. If you have an APSC e mount the 50 1.8 OSS is a much better investment. The big downfall of this lens is a very poor AF motor. This is the slowest focusing native lens. There is a firmware update that makes it OK. I would imagine that AF would be brutal with the a7r or s. Completely forget tracking with this lens. Now for the good. This lens is small, light, inexpensive, and the optics are actually pretty good. I no longer have any cheap 50s but optically this lens seems competitvewith any cheap 50s out there. So if you want a small light fast 50 and can live with slow AF then this is your lens. If you have a larger budget the 55 1.8 has a great AF motor, is better wide open, and just a beautiful match for the sony a7xx cameras.

The only downside is the noisy AF ( autofocus) and plasticy feel. Overall great lens for the price.

Don't compare this to others

Well, if you want silent and deadly accurate, get the f1.4 for $1k. If you want A BUDGET lens that outperforms the kit lense and is faster, get this. It's regularly $199 on sale and can be had cheaper on open box! I use it mainly for product photography but occasionally portrait and landscape! Sweet spot for me in product photos is f3ish. For portrait, wide open will cause blooming on white clothes in bright light. I actually enjoy it in most cases. For landscape, f5-12 are super sharp. Autofocus isn't too slow if you update it and for video where I do "talking head" YouTube stuff, it's great as long as you record via external audio. You cannot compare this to lenses several hundred dollars more. Much like you wouldn't compare a Miata to a supercar. They both drive, just differently! Give it a shot, if you don't like it, sell it or trade it.

Excellent Affordable Lens

Portrait shoots is what I use this lens for. Excellent sharpness, fast focus and the bokeh behind the subject is nice and smooth.
