Tour de force performances by Davis & Washington

Ms. Viola Davis and Mr. Denzel Washington dominate the screen in this heart-wrenching depiction of the experiences of a Black-American family in the years after World War II. Mr. Washington portrays a proud and bombastic Troy Maxson along with his hidden insecurities of being underappreciated by white society while trying to provide for his wife, sons and brother. Ms. Davis is his long-suffering wife Rose who puts her heart and soul into keeping the family together despite the tempestuous relationships between father and sons and her ultimate betrayal by Troy. Ms. Viola Davis most definitely earned her Oscar. The remaining cast members - Stephen McKinley Henderson, Mykelti Williamson, Russell Hornsby and Jovan Adepo - also deserve kudos for their fine performances.

    A Tour De Force!

The quality of the Blue Ray is as expected. But this Movie is a Denzel "Tour De Force!" Just and incredible movie, amazing script, extraordinary performances from Viola Davls and Denzel Washington. Washington also directed this and keeps true to the feel of the play. The script is powerful and driving, but the performance of the two principals makes this a Must See! It can be argued that Washington deserved the Oscar for his performance, but there is no argument about Davis. Viola Davis "Rules" and her Oscar is "Well deserved." This is a movie you will want to own.

My Theater class, several years ago, selected me to play Rose (the leading lady that Viola Davis plays in this movie) so I bought it to put with my other memorabilia. These two actors have for the most part ALWAYS been strong forces in adding to a great theatrical experience. Therefore I am glad that they were able to blend their talents together to present this awesomely eye opening play; which has given on the stage (now to movie goers as well) a glimpse of Mr. Wilson's, work & another way of seeing struggles that were faced by many in the 1950's going into 1960's. Side note; August Wilson wrote this play & it actually went on to be the Winner of the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. So job well DONE Viola & Denzel!

    Oscar winning performance

Denzel should have won the Oscar for his performance here (without disrespect to Casey who also played his part well in Manchester by the Sea). I really can't describe Denzel's acting in this film because it's so phenomenal. I know that I cannot cast any vote for the Oscar (plus it's too late, if ever). At least, I can send a message to Denzel, through this review, that he deserved another Oscar. Well, there is always a next year. By the way, this is a great movie. Viola and the others acted convincingly.

    Who doesn't like Denzel

Denzel is one of our national treasures - I can't recall ever seeing a Denzel movie that wasn't good. And, in this case, as you watch his acting, the amount of dialog and interaction required by his character is immense. Rich characters and a reminder of how things were - and, as I recall, this was based on a stage play based on a story and, in that case, you have to fill the gap from Denzel's last scene to the final chapter of the movie as a stage lights out.

Denzel Washington shows what's behind Troy Maxson's anger, while Viola Davis as Rose Lee Maxson shows what it takes to be with him through it all. Having seen the play before, it was nice to see it out in the open in the 'real world'...this in no way, to me, lessened the impact that it makes when seen on a live theater's cloistered stage set...the power of 'Fences' the 'play' is very present in this film. P.S. Denzel should have got that Oscar!

My husband and I finally got around to watching this movie. It had been a long day and right after it started my hubby said he wasn't sure if he'd be able to stay awake for the 2 hours to watch it. Even though there's very little "action", the acting is wonderful (especially Denzel and Viola, but the other performers do quite well too) and it kept our full attention the entire movie. He didn't have any trouble staying awake.

One of my favorite new films! It took me a few minutes to get over the language, at first, but it is key to the Washington character. The acting is superb, and Viloa Davis...well, she just gets stronger and stronger with each role she inhabits. The story of a black family at the end of WWII, is emotionally powerful, and the script, is strong all the way. Easy to see why Viola got the Oscar. Just great does not do it justice.

Denzel and Viola Davis are really great cast work together in the movie fences. Some movies have such an impact that you can relate your life or struggle to it. Watching fences saying a father take care of his family from living middle class in living trying to make ends meet as an experience no father wants to go through. This movie shows the ups and downs of the black family that through their struggle love was the most important thing from a supportive wife while trying to teach his son the important things in life. A definite must watch. Denzel has definitely made another hit.

"Fences" is a very powerful movie about a African-American family trying to make it in America. T he story line is strongest between Father and Son, the reason the Father has so much trouble showing the Son the meaning of parental love. Denzel Washington was nominated for "Best Actor" Oscar for his acting in this motion picture, personally speaking, I do believe he should have won for fantastic artistic venture.

Denzel Washington directed and stars in this adaptation of August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, which centers on a black garbage collector named Troy Maxson in 1950s Pittsburgh. Bitter that baseball's color barrier was only broken after his own heyday in the N e g r o Leagues, Both Washington and co-star Viola Davis won Tonys for their performances in the 2010 revival of the play.

Fences is just an awesome story and movie. Denzel Washington and Viola Davis performance was above outstanding. Viola owned winning the academy award for best supporting actress for her performance. It is still unbelievable that Denzel did not win the academy award for best actor. His performance was superb and some of his best acting. He was basically cheated out of the academy award.
