Rock Paper Scissors with bloody consequences

This is an action game that is heavily influenced by the fighting genre. It plays like a visceral game of Rock Paper Scissors, whereby you must predict where and how an enemy is going to attack, and either dodge or counterattack. That is easier said than done, as while you are dueling with one other person, there is a whole battlefield full of enemies and other online players hunting you down. This is an online only game, be aware that even the single player has an always online requirement.

For Honor is the bane of all existence to gamers who are button mashers. The combat system is well thought out and skill based without having to use complex combos. Built as an online multiplayer melee battle sim, For Honor beautifully exhibits how blocking, deflecting, dodging, and feints are key skills to becoming an advanced player. Couple those skills with unique 'heroes' that play quite differently and are customizable and you have a fighter that is very watchable and suited for vs. play.

It's a good game, but not a great one.

This game leaves a lot to be desired. The mechanics are great and it has a solid idea at its foundation, but its execution is poor. For one, most people who did nit buy this game on day one are going to have a hard time in any game mode that uses gear stats. It is almost impossible to play against anyone who has invested any significant amount of time into this game. Some sort of matchmaking system could solve this but it does not exist so players who are starting out may get matched up against people with reputation 5+ characters with gear scores over 100. Another thing is that the game relies on p2p matchmaking so some people may find their connection to be spotty at times and it might fail and disconnect you. I myself have only had this happen to me maybe 3 or 4 times but even then it is still disappointing. As with many other Ubisoft games, For honor has a micro-transaction marketplace to buy steel which can be used to unlock cool skins or celebrations. While this itself does not bother me, what does bother me is that steel is also used to upgrade you weapons, for example you might receive a level 4 sword after a match which you can then upgrade to a level 5 with steel, and that steel does not come by very easily when playing the game without using real money to buy in game currency. Overall, the game has a novel idea with solid mechanics but fails to deliver any semblance of fairness or balance.

Amazing and elegant fighting mechanics however the menu UI is hideous and designed around getting you to spend $ on "steel packs" to unlock more gear. Also the servers are not strong enough to support the traffic. In a game so based on timing, it sucks to have a laggy match. Which happens often. I don't lag on any other games. I have 150mbps internet and a powerful router.

This game is really fun and engaging. It's graphics are blockbuster grade and it's controls are fluid. I really enjoy the fighting mechanics. Challenging but not impossible. The story mode is fairly long and absolutely beautiful. I have to stop and admire the landscapes. There is a variety of enemies to keep it interesting and a variety of fighters you get to choose from. A good amount of customization. Even after beating the game I find myself replaying it because no two battles are the same. This is a really good game. If you want to get away from call of duty shooters for a little bit this will be a an enjoyable alternative.

Finally a tactical hack and slash. I was a bit tired of the Musou game (Dynasty Warriors and cie). This is way more tactical. You need to learn the right moves in order to become efficient. Overall a solid game and a unique experience. Even the story mode is decent.

My first night with this game i was not too thrilled with it. Tge 2nd day it became more fun. The controls are what discourages you but does not take long to get used to. Once you get the controls down, the fun begins. The story mode is good but the online is lots of fun. Trying out different heroes is a must. There are pro and cons to each hero and Ubisoft has more heroes on the way thri the season pass. I cant wait.

Having enjoyed fighting games when I was younger, but no longer able to complete the complex motions as I aged, this game gives me a similar feel in the 1v1 duals but allows me to still be competitive with my dulled reflexes. The campaign is interesting and weaves a tale that give some background to the origins and continuing conflict, but the game shines in the different multi-player modes.

Deep tactical combat system but may get repetitive

I played the beta and was amazed by the depth of the combat system. This is a thinking man's fighter as you must analyze your opponent's blocking stance and change your's attacking stance accordingly for your strikes to land. You can "throw" your opponent but even that can be blocked. I haven't even mentioned the parries and feints yet. Button mashing will get you slaughtered. There are four classes of warriors to pick from and the balance feels right between them. Each has their strengths and weakness and a player's skill level with each can make the difference. When in doubt, gang up on the stronger warrior. Now the bad: Due to a limited number of choices for online matches, the game has the potential to have a small replay value. You are limited to domination, team deathmatch, and duels. Team work is essential to win in the multiplayer matches as solo play will get you annihilated. The combat system has a steep learning curve and the AI bots, that can fill in the team during 4v4, can be maddening difficult at times. There is a single player story mode that I have not played yet but that was not the reason I purchased this game. Overall, I'm having a blast passing this game. There is no better feeling than to epically duel your opponent and landing the decisive blow that wins the battle! Even when I lose the duel, I've learned new techniques and strategy every time. On to the next battle!

The game experience is as advertised, the campaign mode is short and really does not provide much replay value. The heart of the game is the online multiplayer where you get to build up your character and play through similar to other Ubisoft games. for what is offered its a pretty good game, better than some overly hyped games that have come out in the past few months. (no mans sky)

The graphics are awesome in this games, and it's take on fighting/battles is unique and really cool when it works. This game can be a bit frustrating when certain classes have clear advantages over others, making countering or even blocking useless. Once you have practiced and get in the zone, it is actually a lot fun and a sweet take on the genre. Just be patient.
