I've tried smartwatches in the past and they all found the shelf before too long. Given to me recently as a gift from someone who knows how deeply involved we are in the Google ecosystem, it was a solid idea and I'm fairly pleased with it. It seems to have a decent effort in most respects: information, easy to read, Google Assistant, Fit, etc... But I'm not overly impressed with any one function. I'm most pleased with how easy it was to set up with Google account and quickly customize notifications. Very easy, and when I want to be notified, the vibration is impossible to miss. I'm most displeased with the band, which tore in a matter of hours. Cripes I was mad. But it was also because the watch itself is bulky... too thick with some sharp edges that can easily get caught on a door knob or a hanging piece of clothing, which is how it happened. The saving grace there was ordering immediately 3 different types of Barton bands, which arrived today. Quite simply, they make the watch so much more bearable (and wearable). They provide a huge amount of sturdy comfort to an otherwise cumbersome piece of equipment on your wrist.

I bought this watch on 6/11/2020, mainly for going to the gym, but it's great for everyday notifications as well. Can't forget about the NFC feature which saves time at participating retailers. However...there were a couple of really minor annoyances. Like syncing the watch to my Samsung phone. Basically the watch does not auto connect via Bluetooth to your phone once you've paired it. So you have to turn the bluetooth off on your phone and then turn it on while simultaneously activating the Bluetooth on the watch. The watch says disconnected, but once you switch the watch screen to something other and come back to the Bluetooth connection screen the watch should now be in "connected" status to your phone. I wish the watch auto paired but every piece of tech has a quirk. It's late October 2020 and I was curious if a Samsung Galaxy Active 2 would be a better choice. Initially it looked like it was, but in less than a week the Spotify app on it got really quirky...to the point that I couldn't justify it over the Fossil Gen 5. When you switch tracks on the Fossil the screen updates with the song title etc. This feature on the Samsung worked for a minute, then stopped. Maybe it was an update, but it's obvious that Fossil has this area under control. Imagine going to the movies and there were literally different movies playing but they all had the same title.... That's what the Samsung does. You can skip through your tracks but the watch screen does not change accordingly. This is way more annoying than the lack of auto connection. The Samsung is going back. Kudos Fossil!

Wow. Definitely an upgrade from my last watch, the gear s3 frontier. Only four stars because it still seems to be lagging a big behind processor and RAM wise. Good for the money I guess though.

    Pros mentioned:
    Operating system, Price
    Cons mentioned:
    Battery, Display, Ease of use

For this item whether I recommend it or not depends heavily on the use. A simple yes or no can not suffice. Nor can the meters for Quality, Ease of Use, and Value. It all depends on your expectations. For example an audiophile will love Martin Logans, while the same person will hate them because they sound aweful after their spouse/partner forces them to be hidden . A first time buyer of a smart watch will not be impressed, while those of us that have had a few and know they kind of all stink will be quite impressed with this model. To clarify my ease of use - watch faces don't show step count out of the box, kind of silly for a device with a heart rate monitor. Nor does it show you your heart rate without digging, again kind of silly for a device that has a heart rate monitor. To clarify value - the lower cost vs the mechanical fruit earn it a Good. Ease of use issues mentioned above keep it from getting Excellent. To clarify Quality - glaring defects in the software that should have been resolved in beta, earns this device an average. The silicone watch band doesn't help. I am not one to expect miracles. I don't want it to do everything the phone can, my phone lasts 1.5 days with a battery 10 times the size of the watch. So obviously a watch that does everything a phone can will only last a couple hours. It shouldn't need WiFi, It shouldn't need direct access to your google accounts, but it does. As such pesky notifications about account actions persist when all I really wanted was a device to relay notifications off of my phone which is already authorized. Said account actions which are near impossible to get rid of on some gsuite accounts. Standard Gmail and a really old gsuite account is fine, but more recent Gsuite accounts just won't fully authorize this watch even when device management is set to basic. Even in large font mode, text is still hard to read. I've found the problem to be worse while in spaces with LED lighting. Bear in mind this watch is 2-3 times further away from your eyeballs than your phone is, you should be able to read it even if you need readers to look at your phone. Which I can still hold my phone and read it without readers. Those looking for a more fitness orientated model should look elsewhere, it's not really a fitness watch out of the box, you have to enable apps which then consume battery to phone home to the mothership. I have a gear fit pro 2 that did everything I needed except staying on my wrist. And lasted at least 2 full days. with a smaller battery. I would prefer downloading updates to my phone and then pushing them to the watch via bluetooth which uses less power due to proximity. But it doesn't work that way, it seems as WiFi needs to be enabled to attain updates. If you walk away from your phone with bluetooth enabled, your battery dies just as fast as if wifi were on. So listening to music directly off the watch while the watch is burning battery trying to connect to your phone really isn't all that practical. All that said if you use custom battery mode; disable WiFi, disable Always On Display, keep your phone close at all times and don't use the direct music, you can get almost 23 hours between charging. Well maybe more, but who in their right mind will set an alarm to put their watch on the charger in the middle of the night. I was down to 20% when I put the watch on the charger till full. About 23 hours between charges. I am not an addict like most, so if you actually use this thing for calls and you look at your watch every time it beeps, plan on carrying a charger with you. If you are a digital addict, I have no doubt that this watch is the best in the current flock for you. According to other reviews other offerings suffer worse battery life. My 3 star rating is simply due to being tired of paying to be a beta tester. A lot of my quirks could have easily been resolved prior to retail launch had a proper beta test been done. I realize this company isn't the only one, it rings true from the cheapest of items all the way to multi million dollar communication platforms. Had the experience after 2 software updates been achieved out of the box, I would have given a 4 star. Silicone is also a stupid material to make watch bands with. (a leather watch band is cheaper than the price difference out of the box, In case you're wondering) It's a base for a common lubricant. As such the darn thing has to be so tight to keep from sliding around that you see indents for several hours after removal. If I decide to keep it, I will be changing bands to something a little less slippery. Yes indents are normal no matter what, but with silicone they are deeper and more constricting.

Daily setting lasted me 6 1/2 hours. Extended setting barely made it to 8 hours but I changed the setting half day to allow gps to count steps. The quality of the watch is nice and all but I can't even use it as a step counter/ heart rate monitor with battery life constantly at the back of my mind. My Samsung gear sport from can last me almost 3 days on a single charge without me having to tinker with all the settings. We shall see how much more tinkering I got to do for it to last me an actual day. If not, this might just end up being a secondary watch for me. I wouldn't recommend this watch at full price.

A great improvement over my Ticwatch E. The two auxiliary buttons for my two favorite apps are a blessing: the top button for weather and the bottom button for a calendar app that give scrollable monthly calendars. The speaker and microphone give answers to questions via Android's Google Assistant. And the heartrate functions in Google Fit. I charge it overnight and start wearing it at 8AM. By 11 PM when I start charging it, it has about 67% charge still left. (the first few days it wasn't quite so good, but that's when apps were being downloaded).

The watch looks, feels, and works great. Wear OS is kind of lacking, it's clear Google isn't putting the same kind of effort into it. Being a programmer the watch has given me a focus. I plan on making simple apps for the watch.
