It's pretty amazing how little known stories from our past history
have resulted in very entertaining movies. Last year we had
The Revenant and more recently we have Free State of Jones.
Of course The Revenant was an amazing film in so many ways
and a deserving academy award winner, but I was also fascinated
with the story presented here. It is filled with good cast performances
especially that of Matthew McConaughey. Focusing on the message
of what his character stood for and how it can relate to the world we
live in today, these themes are presented in this very entertaining film.
* P.S. I hope M.M. does more civil war period projects in the
future. He's got a perfect flair for these types of roles.

this movie was asked me based on a real historic event with the Civil War so I have no complaint with this whatsoever it has basically all the historical information right. Although some of the characters are fictional but not all. What they did was right when they did take on the Confederate Army to the declare themselves and in the state during the Civil War. Because as they said they were just fighting for the rich and plantation owner not for themselves to go out and see this one on my and watch it I think you're flying than an actual historical event is more interesting than something that never happened or never will happen.
Don't agree with me watch it review it let me know what you think of it.
I'm always glad to hear other people's comment on the movie. Thank you bill

The movie is well acted by all, but what impressed me was the perspective that everyone in the South did NOT support the Confederacy. The Civil War was largely fought by men who were not wealthy to support the few wealthy plantation owners who wanted slaves. This movie gave a perspective on the Civil War that I've not seen taught in most history books! Graphic battles and such, but well worth a watch for anyone interested in history, especially the Civil War.

I am a history buff and this part of history I didn't know about it until I saw the film in a theater. I wanted to have it for my history library and so I purchased the DVD. It is an excellent film, done well and follows history very well. My husband's family was from this area of Mississippi and his grandfather who fought in this war was AWOL several times. He may have been one of the men who sought safety in the swamps during the Civil War. Who knows?

A So-So Movie

The premises of the movie is very interesting. You have the history and civil war portion and then you have a glimpse of the repercussions of that time and how it effects the future. There are 2 story lines going on in the movie surrounding the one particular family. The 2nd story line is in a court room in Mississippi in the 1950's or 1960's. The fight for freedom and holding on to ideals is great. And then the fight to stop slavery, oppression, and lynching for the color of your skin. The movie showed the terrible things that humans can do, but the story line never really was as deep as it could have been and it tended to jump around. You can never really find the bonding and fluidness of the movie and the exact message it was trying to send. You had to do a lot of assuming and putting the pieces together yourself. I like Matthew McConaughey in the movie, but you could never really get that deep connection with his character, which I would say that is more because of the director and writing than his acting. There are some graphic and emotional scenes, but this is a good rental movie or stream it on Netflix or whatever choice of media.

I really REALLY enjoyed this movie. I had no idea that any of these events ever occurred. What an eye opener. Matthew McConaughey was brilliant as was most of the cast. Lots of action.....lots of things that people don't normally see or think about..... Who knew that part of the South actually seceded from the South during the Civil War. In my opinion, this movie should be seen by everybody (except those sensitive to bloody violence, atrocities, etc.).

A story, based on a collection of true accounts, reveals how one man began a personal war against the Confederacy, on behalf of his black (slave) neighbors. Matthew McConaughey plays the convincing character of Newton Knight, a poor farmer eschewing the Southern practice of slavery and mounts - and builds - an army to fight the Confederacy, to make a "safe zone" for all-comers, in Jones County, during The Civil War.

Few movies have made me go onto the internet, after viewing it, to get more information about the issues in that film. I never knew much of what was portrayed in this Matthew McConaughey starred flick. Who knew that part of the South seceded from part of the South DURING the Civil War.....not I for sure. Lots of action, some gruesome footage, lots of new factual history for me, etc., etc........ I loved this movie a lot.

I love history, but did not learn much about the Free State of Jones, other than it was mainly a group hiding out in a swam. It came across more as the Free State of Newton Knight, who just wanted to grow, pick and eat his own corn, with an interesting, yet for me, highly distracting, semi-modern side plot about interracial marriage.

Free State of Jones a excellent civil war movie with all cast and crew members did great job making this film as realistic as possible since its base on a true story about southern states during 1860s-1870s. I never knew much about history of southern states during Civil War but it's was learning experience about southern states struggling back in 1860s-1870s era. I recommend watching Free State of Jones film.

"The Free State of Jones" explores a little mentioned episode of the the American Civil War. Few consider that the white people of the south were not all for the war and slavery. Many southerners felt betrayed by their politicians who voted in their state legislatures for secession against their wishes, and in North Carolina's case, the votes of the people.

If you are a fan of Mcconaughey's work or a fan of Civil War subject matter this is your kind of movie. Strong performances from all and a gritty, serious story during war time Mississippi. Not a date movie for sure, but great to watch after the wife goes to bed and you can't stomach another second of Sports center. Hope Matt gets an Oscar nod for this one.

Set during the Civil War, Free State of Jones tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State.

Historical perspective of Civil War from within the South by dissenters. The opening scenes are very graphic reinactments of battles and the casualties of war during the time period. Then the movie settles into the story of Jones that is well played by Matthew McConaughey. Definitely a different perspective to actual events of the Civil War.

Not an Oscar contender but fun for adults. If you are an American history fan and like everything about the Civil War, you will very much enjoy this supposedly untold true story of a defiant Southern farmer taking on the Confederacy. Solid performances by Matthew McConaughey and the rest of the cast. Bonus Features were informative.

I truly enjoyed this movie as it touched on realistic issues and the common needs and righteous desires of people throughout the world no matter what their ethnicity or culture. And it showcased the efforts of those who risked their lives to see justice done without concern for race, color or creed. Also the caring for animals and their close relationship with humans.

A must for Civil War buffs, Free State of Jones is a ripping fictionalised drama about true events long hidden from history's spotlight. I was fascinated with this story, which I never learned anything about in high school or college history courses. Movie is better than most reviews you see out there.

This film is well made and shows some of the injustices of the pre-Civil War continued long after it ended. Story told from two perspectives: one during the civil war (showing Jones quest for a free state where ALL have the same rights) and one in the 50s or 60s (?)(concerning the "unlawful" marriage of Jones descendant.
