The hot surface light only comes on when the surface units have been used, but do not warn you that the top may be dangerously hot in other areas. I often stand in front of the range and place my hand on the counter or cooktop, and I have a 5 year old--so the hot spots are entirely unacceptable. I am guessing that I have never experienced this flaw in previous ranges because my past models were self-cleaning and perhaps much more insulated. Thankfully, Best Buy is AWESOME about returns/exchanges and helped me find the perfect range.
