Great Combination of Functionality and Elegance

I purchased this watch for its combination of extended functionality over traditional fitness bands (Previously used Vivosmart HR), as well as the traditional watch look and feel. Being able to switch between the athletic silicon band and the stainless steel band so easily is a great added function! This watch is so much more than that! I like the additional fitness and outdoor metrics (GPS tracking/mapping, advanced training metrics). The customization of the watch face makes it even better! It allows you to truly make the watch your own and quickly switch the face between professional life and workout/training. It is one of the best combination smart watch/fitness watches out there, especially if you are not a big fan of Apple products! My personal preferences for a traditional metal and round watch face over the more common square/straight-edged smart watches did play a significant role in my decision. After owning this watch for just over 1 month, I have yet to scratch the sapphire crystal face. I feel like I have been bumping it on everything and it still looks like new. The only negative - for the price, others have told me it should be touch-screen capable. However, the side buttons are more than reasonable, especially if I am trading a touch screen for durability and fewer fingerprints. *I will note that the price tag and the capabilities may not match up with most individual needs for a fitness watch so it is important to weigh these points accordingly.

I was looking at potentially buying the Apple Watch 3 or the Fenix 5. I am very happy with the Fenix 5. Excellent battery life, great fitness metrics, etc. I also have an Apple Watch 2 - and I honestly don't miss it. Highly recommended.

This watch does everything. I needed a smartwatch for notifications from my phone and the ability to silence calls during meetings. A secondary need was for a fitness tracker which this watch knocks out of the park. Love the garmin connect app that goes with it as it gives me more about my activities than any other tracker I have used. The most useful feature I have found is the golf GPS. Once a course is loaded, distances are spot on comparing to a Golf Buddy, Bushnell GPS and a Bushnell range finder.

If you are looking for a fitness watch that looks great, had fantastic activity tracking capability and works well as a "smart" watch, I highly recommend looking at this one! I looked at the fenix 3 for a long time but always thought it was just a little too large, the fenix 5 solved that problem. I love the metal band, dresses it up nicely. The Garmin interface (Garmin Connect) is really good, especially for runners. Moved to this from the Fitbit Blaze and couldn't be happier.

I had the Garmin Fenix 3 HR, and loved it, however it was just a bit too big on me. I then got the Apple Watch Series 2 in stainless. I love my apple watch too, but I really missed the Garmin App. What to do. Well, I bought the Garmin Fenix 5, (I did purchase this at REI). It is a bigger watch then my Apple Watch, but I am glad to have a round watch and a Garmin back on my wrist. This watch will do so much in regard to tracking activities. I will admit the Apple Watch has better smart notifications . So, if you want an activity watch that is great at all types of activities, and has a very long battery life, go for the Garmin. If all you want is a few activities, and more smart stuff, get an Apple Watch or something like that.

I like to check my workout zones so, I have to wear a chest strap because the built in sensor is not as accurate as I would like specially that my workout includes a lot of movement (cross-fit). I think for runners the built-in sensor will work fine for them.

Not impressed out of the box

Purchased two (5 and 5S), which arrived today. The 5 connected easily to my phone, the other will not connect to my wife's phone or mine. Aside from that I am very disappointed with the readability of the watch face. In anything short of direct light it is nearly impossible to read.

      Hello,

Thank you for your review and sorry to hear about your connection issue with the watch and phone. Below are some articles on how to troubleshoot Bluetooth connection issues.

With your readability of the watch face, you might consider changing the backlight settings on the watch.
