Can use the GPS as a phone throught your personal phone. Speak your phone contact and it will call for you. A long time coming out. Downside: at times you may have to speak 2-3 times and that may be not speaking clearly or loud enough. A great GPS. I bought 3 for all vehicles.

Regarding the alternative route feature, your device has the feature called "Change Route" from the menu button on the map screen. This feature will allow you to detour, detour by distance, detour by road, etc. When you press on "Detour" it will automatically find you an alternative route.
In regards to the voice and character options on your device, if you find that there are languages you would like to add to your device, this can be completed through a Garmin program called Garmin Express. Please use the information from the Garmin FAQ links below to help you complete this process.
