Nest offers some of the best home and business cameras on the market, bar none. However, there is a significant drawback: being forced to use Google Home instead of the superior Nest app. I genuinely cannot understand why Google would compel users to switch to a less intuitive, more cumbersome platform. The Google Home app lacks the fluidity and user-friendliness that Nest’s app once had, making daily operation a frustrating experience. Google bought a fantastic product; at the very least, they should give users the option to choose which app to use.

We wanted a camera that we could easily move to different locations depending on our needs and this Google Nest Cam is perfect! The wireless connection allows us to use it inside our home to watch our dog during the day while we are gone and then move it outdoors to watch the driveway when we are out of town. Being able to access the footage on our smart phones is so easy and convenient! You can manage your settings to alert you if movement is detected or you can turn that option off. We are so happy with it with may get another one!

I use both cameras for outdoor use. It has great picture easy Install. I also added the solar panel to these cameras so I wouldn’t have to deal with take them off to charge them since I mounted them a little high off the ground…. I had Vivint and switched to the Google set up and I have to say these are much better than Vivint. And much easier on the wallet.

    Not compatible with Nest app

I added this camera and already have a Nest IQ Camera. Unfortunately the new camera is not compatible with the Nest app. I now have to use Google Home to view events from the new camera and go over to Nest to see events from the old camera. Additionally, the old camera was able to completely hide the cord which this one cannot, in the event you want a wired connection and not worry about battery life. The night vision also isn't as bright and clear as the Nest IQ Camera.

Hi there ambos617, thanks for sharing your insights. We´re sorry to hear that both Nest Cam (Battery) and the Google Home app didn't meet your expectations.

We understand that long time Nest user, like you, enjoy viewing their Nest camera feeds from the Nest app. However, our priority with this launch was building a complete experience for our new cameras and doorbell in the Google Home app. We wanted to make the Google Home app as the one place you can control all your favorite Nest and other smart home devices with the Google Assistant. The new Nest Cameras and doorbells are exclusive to the Home app because we wanted to create an integrated experience with other Google Nest speakers and displays.

If you´re willing to try, you may set up your Nest IQ Camera on the Google Home app as well. You may need to migrate your Nest account to a Google account. For more information, check out this help article:

If you would like your Nest cameras to work well you will need to purchase Nest Aware. Nest Aware has just had a price increase from $60 to $80 a yr. A $20 increase in one year is ridiculous! You can find much cheaper cameras that work just as well without a subscription service. Google Nest cameras are just basic and you can do better! Also, the cameras are battery powered. So be prepared to charge them every few wks...depending on how much they record. For my home that means getting the ladder out along with an extension cord and the Nest charging cable and repeating this action 3 times! Also, be prepared to receive false alerts over car headlights even when your zone is set up not to pick up certain events. Do you self a favor and look at all options before you buy overpriced Google Nest Cameras. They're not worth the trouble and cost!

I couldn't understand how the camera that has 24 hours of continuous internal memory wasn't recording past 12 hours. Then I read the fine print that while the camera has massive internal memory card, you can't use it unless you pay the 8.99 a month to access it. I caved for a few months and cancelled my nest subscription. The camera is now useless. It doesn't notify me of movement as often as it use to; in fact, despite walking past it to leave, it doesn't even recognize the motion. This product is on the hinge of false advertising and is intentionally nerfed once you cancel your plan.

didn't buy it due to not being able to look at camera from Nest on phone. I was about to buy this product and saw the other reviews warning of Google only allowing it to be seen from their interfaces. I ended up buying a Eufy Outdoor Cam Pro Security camera instead and am happy with it: a lot cheaper, the phone app and notifications are great, quality of picture is amazing, integrates with Google home kind off (I am sure Google doesn't give it enough priority, I can view for a few minutes but then stops). If Google keeps messing around like this I might start using other home integrations.

Google - Nest Camera Battery – Snow Review I have multiple older model Google Nest Cams on my property – the Nest Cam IQ outdoor, the Nest Hello Doorbell as well as the Nest outdoor 2 pack. While those cameras have always performed flawlessly, I always disliked the install process – simply due to the wires needing to be hidden – meant drilling through the house, feeding the wire through to the inside and then finding a nearby outlet etc). I was excited when this product launched as it would fix that install issue. Installing this camera took all of 2 minutes – 2 screws to attach the magnetized base into my pergola where this camera will reside. Simply the place the camera on the base and position the camera as needed. Connecting to the Google Home app took about 30 seconds and within 3 minutes I had the camera up and running. The resolution of this camera is as good as the older products and having the video recordings through the Nest Aware Subscription is simply priceless and cost effective. Daytime and nighttime views are flawless and you can filter the video clips to see only what you want to see – people, motion, sound etc. My only critique is that this camera does not seem to be able to be viewed in the Nest app like all my other Google products noted above, only the Google Home app. Having the two app ecosystems seems tech sloppy to me – I am guessing the Nest app will be going away at some time and the Google home app will prevail. The other issue I see would be theft – would be very very easy – walk up, pluck the camera off the mount – done. Google does have a theft replacement policy for free on its newest products including this one. Another quality product from Google! I would recommend.

Be VERY careful before buying the new Nest Cameras

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Pay attention here: (from a long time Nest user). With the New Battery camera ... 1. You CANNOT review video history. You can only review 'events'. So, if in a 24 hr period your new Nest camera detects 6 seconds of activity - you will only be able to see 6 seconds of video from that 24 hour period. No scrolling through video history like with the old next cam in the (much better) nest app. How this was approved by a product manager is crazy. A video camera that does not allow video scrubbing? 2. New Cameras DO NOT work with the Nest App - so if you have devices today in the Nest app - you cannot add the new cameras to that app - you will need to check two places - google home and the old nest app. Be wary of "we will buy you lunch tomorrow" from google about the Google home app accomodating old nest cams - the new app is a step backward - see comments. 3. EVERYTIME you select the camera in the Google Home App - you see a full screen display of - not video like one would think, but your remaining Battery percentage... yes every time. you need to clear that screen then see if there was an event recorded. 4. Not sure what prevents the camera from being stolen - it is only attached to the base via a magnet? A 5-year-old child could easily remove it from the base. Probably of no use to a thief - but the owner would lose video and their expensive camera. 5. Frankly I am very surprised this is what we waited for from Google - sending mine back.

Hi JTC1, thanks for letting us know about insights with Nest Cam (Battery). We´re sorry for any inconvenience these changes may have caused you.

We really didn't remove 24/7 video history. Our goal is to give users like you more choice. With event video history, we wanted our products to help our customers understand what’s going on at home easily and highlight the important activity for you. Your Nest Cam (battery) can still accommodate up to 10 days of continuous video recording (CVR) and 24/7 video history if hardwired to power and subscribed to Nest Aware Plus ($12 a month for all of your cameras, speakers, and displays on the same home structure).

We understand that long time Nest users enjoy viewing their Nest camera feeds from the Nest app, however, our priority with this launch was building a complete experience for our new cameras and doorbell in the Google Home app. We wanted to make the Google Home app as the one place you can control all your favorite Nest and other smart home devices with the Google Assistant. The new Nest Cameras and doorbells are exclusive to the Home app because we wanted to create an integrated experience with other Google Nest speakers and displays.

Also, using the Google Home app and a Google account provides a lot of benefits, including access to our trusted security features, and seamless integration with our other Google Nest devices, and Google Assistant. However, we always value your feedback and we´ve taken note of it. We´ll also make sure to pass it along to the right team since we´re always looking for ways to improve our products and services.

Lastly, you can protect your Nest Cam (Battery) from possible theft by installing an anti-theft mount accessory.

We´re hoping you will reconsider to keep using your Nest Cam (Battery), and if you need further guidance with any of your concerns, you´re more than welcome to contact us here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

I had these cameras for over two days know and here what I can tell you: * Terrible Batter life - Only two days and my battery is down to 64%. This is not intended to be used with a battery. Must be plugged or google needs to release solar panels soon as they stated earlier. * With maximized sensitivity and every object (Human, Animal, Vehicle) recognition is enabled; Humans only gets recognized if you come to a halt. If you never stop walking then camera never recognizes you and never triggers an event. Not once recognized a vehicle. * Single charging cable. Do not buy double package because of this. Order single ones if you plan on doing so to get charging cables per camera. Surely google didnt do enough testing on these prior to releasing it. Its so sad that the only reason I bought them is because of the brand name behind them. Google is keep failing me on product quality and usability. These products are garbage.

Hi, thanks for reaching out. We're sorry to hear about the poor experience you have with the battery life, object recognition and charging cable that come with your Nest Cam (Battery).

To detect anything besides a person, animal, or moving vehicle, your Nest Cam (Battery) checks for general motion in the scene. It learns what’s normally in its background view and looks for movement and changes. As a result, it can sometimes trigger not just for important things, but also for minor things like tree branches swaying in the wind. If you don't have an active Nest Aware subscription, we recommend getting one. With Nest Aware, your camera uses advanced algorithms to pick out different kinds of activity. This makes the alerts you receive to your phone, tablet, or email even more helpful.

You may also set up Activity Zones so that your camera will only record in the zones that you’ve enabled. This allows you to ignore busy or unimportant areas of your scene. For more information, simply visit this page: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9207697

Google Nest Cam comes in a nicely designed packaged box. When you open the box you will find the camera in a perfectly fitted mold. The lens comes covered with a QR code to help setup the camera. It comes with a charging cable that is unique to the camera. It can fit in both directions but only one will completely connect so make sure to turn it around if it is not all the way in. It has a wall mounting plate that you can put just about anywhere. You can also order longer cables or a different type of mount. Comes with instruction book but there is not much on it other than plug it in, download the Google Home app and Tap to add your camera. The rest of the setup comes in the app. It is a bit lengthy to setup but not hard. Just agree to a bunch of statements. You must have wifi and bluetooth turned on when setting it up. Choose your wifi network and choose a device location name. Then sign up for a free trial of Nest Aware. It cost $6 or $12 a month for service. The main difference between the two is how long you can keep video stored. You can setup zones if you need to if you don't want to be alerted by every car that goes down the street. You can turn the camera on of off through the app and it will show you the battery strength. The camera hangs on the mount by a magnet so you can position it any way but it doesn't suggest upside down. It has a microphone and a speaker that is fairly loud. What I don't like is if you put this anywhere close to the ground anyone can just come up and walk off with it since it is only held on by a magnet. Also the video quality is a little grainy sometimes even on the max setting. Overall it is a good and easy to setup camera if you want to add security video on your property.

These cameras were pretty good in the beginning, but if you live in a cold climate don’t waste your money. These are extremely expensive and end up being paper weights, of course after the warranty as well. They don’t hold a charge in the winter and they don’t hold any battery life during that time. Much better off with other options. I end up with $500+ of useless cameras. In addition to all of this when they do actually charge it’s exhausting getting them connected and charging, if you don’t mess around with the reset button fifteen - twenty times, complete waste of your time, money, and a huge addition of frustration.

Hi there, nismos14. Thanks for sharing your views on Nest Cam (Battery). We're sorry to hear that you had a frustrating experience charging it on colder temperatures.

Your Nest Cam (Battery) comes with a built-in rechargeable 6 Ah, 3.65V lithium-ion battery that provides excellent charging performance. However, colder temperatures will greatly affect the charging performance of the battery. The recommended charging temperature should be within 32°F to 104°F (0°C - 40°C). And during winter, the battery life may have less than half the life that it has at temperatures close to -4°F (-20°C) and any temperature lower than this will prevent the battery from charging at all.

If you have additional questions and support concerns with your Nest Cam (Battery), we'd be happy to assist you here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

Absolutely TERRIBLE. I’ve owned nest cameras for 8+ years and I cannot adequately express how disappointing the Google Home app is since they forced us away from the wonderful NEST app. I just cannot believe how Google arrived here. It’s crazy. If you don’t believe me go read online about it. The cameras are honestly worthless now. There is no ability to live stream the camera with a wireless camera from Google. I am going to change my entire system and I’ve spent thousands on the Google camera. I have 10 of them. 6 original, perfect camera that are 8 years old and still work in the best app and 4 brand new cameras that suck and are forced to work in the Google Home app. Battery life is also not close to the 6-12 weeks. NOT EVEN CLOSE. Google has ruined a once wonderful product line. There are better options out there.

Hi NeilT, thanks for sharing your feedback with us about the Nest Cam (battery), and we’re sorry to hear it didn’t meet your expectations.

At temperatures between -4°F (-20°C) and 32°F (0°C), the camera will continue to work, but the lithium-ion battery in your Google Nest camera or doorbell won’t be able to charge. Many devices, including popular models of doorbell cameras and cell phones, use lithium-ion batteries for their high power and long life, but these batteries are also affected by temperatures below freezing. If the battery drains completely, the camera will shut down. For wired installation setups with a Nest Cam (battery), the wires power the camera directly. At temperatures below freezing, the battery won’t charge, but as long as the wired power source is available, the camera can operate in temperatures down to -4°F (-20°C). This link might be helpful: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/11830989

Also, Nest has long been focused on delivering quality products to our customers. We’re also focused on giving our customers value for the price, including three hours of event history right out of the box for the first time ever. On-device processing also gives you smart alerts and Activity Zones, which historically have required a subscription. There's no fee to stream full resolution live video and receive basic notifications, as long as your camera is connected to the internet. The Nest Cam (battery) comes with event video history without a subscription which will automatically expire and be deleted after 3 hours. However, you’ll need a Nest Aware subscription to receive full and extra features. Check what you can get with the Nest Aware subscription here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9233159

We’d be happy to share your feedback with the right team for future improvements. And if you run into any concerns about the camera features and its performance, let us know and we’ll do our best to help: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest
