Customers are saying

Customers are positive about the Pixel Tablet's sound quality, battery life, ease of use, and the convenient charging dock. Many appreciate the tablet's screen size and design, although some find the price point high for the features offered. A common criticism centers around the 60Hz refresh rate, and some users express concerns about storage limitations and the responsiveness of the Google Assistant. Overall, the positive feedback on key features like audio and battery life outweighs the negative comments regarding price and refresh rate.

    A very first generation product

This is a very first generation product. On one hand this tablet is quite speedy, with Geekbench scores of 1437 single core and 3706 multi core, faster than the Samsung Tab S9 FE in the same price bracket. It lacks a keyboard connector, a stylus, and expandable storage. On the other hand this product screams that it's first generation. The charging speaker dock is just a paperweight without the tablet, even though it sounds decent with the tablet connected, but there's no way to manually cap the battery charge (like you can with Samsung), instead relying on "intelligent charge" to not wear the battery life out quickly by keeping it constantly 100% charged. Trying to remove the tablet moves the base as it is not weighted and the magnet is too strong. The Google Assistant is not as responsive as it is on my Android phone, and cannot do the same things it can on my phone. Asking it to play Thursday Night Football on Prime Video, for example, leaves it saying "Cannot find Thursday Night Football on Prime Video". Asking it to turn on the thermostat fan for 15 minutes (I have a Nest thermostat connected to my Google account) leads it to say it cannot do that. Asking it to open an app requires me to unlock the device, so you can't really use it as a smart display the way you can with, say, an Echo Show. As a tablet, it's 4/5, as a smart display, 2/5, but for $350 there's no comparison.

Five years later, Google's back at it with the Pixel Tablet, a $500 Android tab that comes bundled with a magnetic charging dock to enable some smart display-like functionality. It's a really clever idea, and overall, I like the Pixel Tablet quite a bit. But it's also a classic first-generation gadget, with some annoying drawbacks and limitations that might make you want to wait for the sequel. I’m not sure if it’s worth $500 it will do some people already have a Google Home max. I think there are better tablets out there. I do wonder what happened to you Google assistant day it’s like it’s worse than Siri now.

Great as a tablet but Google Assistant is not as responsive on this tablet like she is on a dedicated Nest Hub. Still a great buy.

I bought this largely to replace a Google Nest Hub in my kitchen, since it's running full Android and I can install things like recipe apps. I live in a household with five people, and we've all been talking to the Google Nest Hub on a daily basis. I thought this would be perfect, but the default behavior is that "Hey Google" only works for one person, because you have to train your voice to the account (I'm using a family account that I created specifically for this shared device). There is an option to enable "Hey Google" for anyone. But it only "works" when the tablet is _locked_ and in hub mode. So if it's unlocked, maybe because you're following a recipe, or just asked it to start a timer, suddenly only one person can talk to it again. And there's no option to disable the locked requirement. It's insane to me that I can't configure my tablet to consistently respond to "Hey Google" while it's docked on its hub. The second problem is more technical, and maybe it'll get fixed, but "Hey Google" for everyone isn't even working when it is locked and docked, like it's supposed to. I'm actually considering installing Amazon Alexa on my Google Pixel Tablet, because "Hey Google" is so absurdly broken. If you don't care about "Hey Google," this tablet is otherwise pretty nice, and I think you'll love it.
