You are correct that the XL cartridges should provide a higher ink volume. If your cartridge did not produce results, there are several ways to see better results next time.
I understand that a poor experience is irritating, especially when you have a busy day or urgent work requiring a print. Ensure cartridge functioning is not indicative of a more significant problem. Print diagnostic tests are one strategy to test it. Inspecting the cartridge outside of the printer can also spot clogs or dust buildup. I would suggest you give your printer a break. Leaving the printer on while idle increases the chance your ink dries out quicker.
