I have now gone through three Omen laptops in the course of 2 weeks, and am preparing to take the third back in a return. Everyone one of them have had issues in which while gaming, netflix, anything really, the screen flickers and regularly goes black, requiring a soft reset before the screen comes back. Sound still comes through, like if I'm watching netflix I can still hear it, but the screen is dark. More jarringly, sometimes the screen splits into several identical, smaller screens, all staticy. Updated drivers, updated BIOS, talked to Nvidia, talked to HP - they have all said, "Well shucks, I dunno what it is." I don't have anything 'intensive' on the laptop yet, so it's not something I'm putting on. My guess is, windows 10, the integrated Intel card and the Nvidia don't all get along. Either way, too much hassle - it's a beautiful machine when it works, but 3/3 suggests a systemic problem with all the pieces.

Solid Laptop, with a few quirks

Decided to purchase this after my previous laptop gave out on me. My experience has been good overall, but not problem-free.
It can run modern games on higher settings and has fluid power in both the CPU and GPU departments, however, there does seem to be some sort of conflict between the two PUs, as there are times when games have a massive stutter effect as the frame-rate drops very low. So far, I've been able to get the frame rate back to normal by unplugging and/or reinserting the power supply while gaming. This does not happen every time, but happens enough to note.
Seems to run CPU-intensive games better when the keyboard backlight is off. The backlight also seems to impact the computers ability to sleep or hibernate properly, and seems to make it run on the warmer side when playing demanding games (not hot, but quite warm to the touch). May be Windows 10 related, as my previous laptop (which was an HP with no keyboard backlight) also started to have some sleep/hibernation issues once i upgraded it to windows 10.
I've been using my Omen for a couple months now, for mixed use beyond just gaming, and it has performed well overall, even on most games (the above quirks usually occur temporarily, only on games with high CPU demands, and usually early on. It does not happen every time, but when it does happen, once you move past the initial glitch, CPU-heavy games run smoothly without issue for several hours of continuous gameplay). CPU and NVIDIA GPU drivers (and possibly windows 10) are the most likely culprit for any momentary gaming issues, so I hope that the glitch will be resolved completely without workarounds, however, the existence of the glitches along with the backlight issue prevent me from rating this more than four stars.
I'd recommend this for the price point and combination of features, hardware and overall performance, but a protection plan is an absolute MUST if you buy this.

The design of the laptop is very tasteful. It doesn't necessarily scream, "Look at me! I'm a gamer!" It's something I can take to work to knock out a few projects and not get laughed at.
This laptop is extremely capable of whatever you throw at it. Gaming is a given. It runs GTA V at the highest settings with ease. When it comes to typing up documents and putting spreadsheets together, this laptop keeps on kicking. After a full charge, it's lasted 6 hours on the next to lowest brightness setting before having to plug it in.
The only problem I have is that I found a dead pixel on the display well after I could return it to the store. It's one tiny pixel and it's barely visible, but knowing it's there drives me crazy. I'd give it 5 stars if I didn't have to stare at this tiny speck.

I didn't buy this machine for gaming, so I can't speak to its performance there, specifically. I wanted to be able to efficiently run Autodesk (AutoCAD) and other 3D modeling software so I went to the store with a list of specifications. It should also be noted that I'm not a Windows PC person... at all. I've been strictly Mac for quite some time, so I wasn't exactly prepared to discover that the machine I would need would be something configured and marketed towards gaming. After a lot of weighing this unit versus the Asus models in store, I chose the HP... and I'm extremely happy with the purchase. With comparable (and in several cases superior) stats to the trusted Asus rigs, the HP Omen was less expensive and moves like a beast. It runs AutoCAD flawlessly, and I've had no issues with lag when multiple applications are in use. It's got a big, beautiful display, while not being too big to transport easily, and overall it just looks really cool. The red, backlit keyboard is slick. The only drawback is that the battery life is fairly limited. It's decent, but if you're planning on doing a lot of work/gaming on the go, be sure to take the cord with you. All-around high praise for this HP machine from a long-time Mac user.

It's a gaming laptop that I purchased for general use. I wanted more performance than ordinary laptops. It has met my performance expectations very well, but has a couple of annoying features. First, the keyboard is backlit in red, which is hard to see with, on or off. Second, the power input is moved to the right side, which is not where most of them are. The plug and cord are located where you are trying to use the mouse. Same with HDMI input, on the left side where cord sticks out, instead of right side as on a lot of other laptops.

I use the pc for mostly gaming with a little bit of work mixed in. Overall i am very happy with the quality of this product. I was worried it wouldn't perform but it does a great job. I had a ASUS ROG gaming laptop prior to this one and this is as good or better than my other laptop. I play World of Warcraft and other game and with setting on ultra I am averaging about 70 fps. If you looking for a lightweight gaming laptop then you will not be disappointed with this pc.

I was lucky to find this on the open box shelf. I wasn't ready to spend what it would cost full price, but they had 30% off the open box items.
After dealing with HP support on my previous HP laptop, I had sworn off HP. However, this was too good a deal to pass up for a gaming laptop.
The staff at Best Buy was knowledgeable and there was no pressure to purchase. They were glad to power it up and let me check out the keyboard, etc. to help make my choice.
So far it has been very good. Setup went smooth. I was hoping to get a laptop with an SSD, however the hybrid hard drive in this laptop seems plenty fast. I like the backlit keyboard, and being red instead of white backlighting is a little easier on the eyes in low light.
It feels very sturdy, screen/lid hinges are heavy duty. Nothing feels flimsy or cheap in this unit. Keyboard keys have a good feel to them, nothing clacky or cheep feeling like some laptops.
The 17" screen is huge, but it still fits in my bag (just barely). Screen is very bright and crisp. Even my old eyes can read it just fine.
Overall I'm very happy with it.

Key board and Trackpad are okay, but have annoying trends. Laptop is fast and can run most new games on high some on ultra. Vent is right in top of right leg so it get hot, but not too bad. Good overall and happy with my choice. Not a powerhouse but it is a solid everything laptop.

Full disclosure: I bought this for my son. He really digs this unit for gaming. Everything (so far) he has played on Steam has run smoothly, and with higher settings than he is used to. He asked if VR support was on board, but it is not. No big deal, though. He has been bringing it with him when he travels and the large size hasn't been a bother...quite the contrary: the extra screen-real estate has been a blessing, and looks nice and bright, too.
Overall this computer is a good fit for the gamer.
That's my humble 2¢
Take care!

I've owned this laptop for almost 3 years now and I recommend upgrading to SSD. Start up is fine however, the gaming capability average. Websurfing should be an easy task but for some reason, there seems to be slight delay from clicking on a web browser or any application to start typing when I compare this to my desktop. The laptop catches more fingerprints than the FBI. The screen hinges are holding up well. Battery holding up but does seem to drain faster over the past couple years. Maybe a 3 hour charge. The screen size is great and quality serves its purposes. No issues with movies or video. I don't use the speakers much as I Bluetooth the sound to an external speaker or headphones. It does heat up but keep in a well ventilated area.

I bought this laptop for some casual gaming when I don't feel like sitting at my desk. This is one of the nicest laptops I ever had for gaming. I stays pretty cool when the game is being played. Frame rates run smooth. I highly recommend this laptop for any gaming purposes. For its price this is a solid deal.

Great laptop. Runs League of Legends at 60 frames on highest settings easy. I swapped out the Hybrid drive for a proper SSD. Has an option for m.2 SSD as well, which is great. A bit plastic-y, but at this price for the specs, who cares about the casing? Backlit keyboard is a nice touch.

I'm not a pro gamer, by any means. I play World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Hero's of the Storm, League of Legends, either the highest settings or the next to the highest settings and the HP Omen does an amazing job.
The one thing I don't like about this laptops is the fact that the Nividia 965M graphics card utilizes Optimus technology, which means the video card can't use g-sync or vaired v-sync, plus there are other video options unavailable due to optimus tech. I suggest looking up and reading about Optimus technology and deciding for yourself if it is worth it or not. I don't think it is.

I simply have nothing bad to say about it. It's fast, it's bright, it does what I need it to do. The only bad I have is the Microsoft Office will not allow you to manual configure the Exchange Server. No fault on this computer, just Microsoft. I am thinking of buying another one for my wife!

A bit to much flex

This laptop is pretty good. It has the same fast processor that most gaming laptops have, a generous amount of 12 GB DDR4 2133Mghz RAM, and 4GB vRAM GTX 965M, the HDD has decent speeds. It is pretty much a good all-rounder gaming laptop. But my only 2 complaints are the laptop's top lid and keyboard have a bit to much flex in them and difficulty to upgrade. The flex is a personal gripe since I want the thing to be study since I will be carrying this to university multiple times in a week, so I needed something that feels study so I don't have to worry if the surface I'm placing the laptop on will puncture a hole in the device or I need to be even more extra careful in carrying it when I have to go to my next class. The upgradability is pretty open, with compatibility for an m.2 PCIe drive and ram that can be upgraded along with the included HDD( HP said that upgrading will not void warranty, but if you will need it service by them you have to return the original parts). But despite the nice set of upgrade options, the process is going to be a bit of a hassle. The way the bottom on the laptop is connected is sturdy because it tapers around to the top keyboard area. So you have to be extra careful in removing it, pair that with the excessive flex and my mind is telling me to stop as soon as I see a small amount of flex. I haven't tried it myself, I watched videos about it on YouTube and my mind was cringing at that thought that it might get crack. But after you pass that stressful ordeal, everything is just staring at you for your upgrade leisure.
The other parts of the laptop are decent, no ground breaking tech here. Speakers are ok, they get loud; but start to distort when reaching higher volumes. Lacking it base.
Screen is pretty dim and washed out, but I'm not a content creator or artist so that wasn't much of a deal breaker for me. Recommend that you see the demo before buying if it matters to you.
Keyboard is great. The flex might be an issue to some, like me, but the typing experience was good.
The graphics card is pretty good despite it being a laptop version, can play Overwatch on high settings with 50+ FPS.
Overall it's a great laptop, but it wasn't for me because of how I will be using it, so I ended up having to return the thing. But if you want a good budget gaming laptop that will be stationary on a desk or just moving it around the house occasionally, then this is an option to consider.

I bought this laptop to replace one that was 4 years old and wanted one I could play modern games on. So far it has done every thing I asked of it. Mentioned in some of the other reviews was an issue with sticky keys. I have had that same issue.
One thing I highly recommend is installing the Nividia program to keep the driver for the video card up to date. I had some lag in FarCry4, but after installing latest update and used Nividia's control panel app to optimize the game settings it's run flawless.
