Garbage laptop - returned 3 in a month

My previous laptop kicked the bucket in November and I saw a great opportunity in this laptop as Best Buy had a sale on it for Black Friday - from the specs, everything looks fantastic. It's small, lightweight, supports active pen, has a quality screen, has a large SSD and a good amount of RAM.
In practice? Worst laptop I've ever owned. The day after purchasing, I began setting it up only to find out that the left half of the screen was completely unresponsive to the pen. I exchanged the lemon for a new one, which seemed to work fine for a while. There were some immediate downsides - using the pen on the screen made it clear that the screen was flimsy, it bowed significantly and felt like it was going to break. The laptop was unusable as a tablet because it became INCREDIBLY hot and difficult to touch. The fan was loud, the hinges didn't feel very sturdy, and about 80% of the time when I played audio, there would be an obnoxious crackling sound accompanying it. After about a week, the laptop wouldn't boot anymore, saying the fan had stopped working. I exchanged the machine for a third one. It also was too hot to put on my lap or use as a tablet, with a loud fan and a crackling audio problem. In addition, I went to use Skype and found out that the webcam is horribly discolored. I returned the machine, worried that the heat was going to lead to another broken fan before the return policy expired and already dissatisfied with the other problems. I've switched to the Lenovo Yoga 920 and it has been a far better experience from the moment I got it.
Reading online about the problems I had with the Spectre, I came to find out that they are widespread. HP forums are littered with posts about the Spectre's heat and fan problems, the broken webcams, and the audio problem. There is no response or helpful advice from HP on any of these forums, despite the fact that countless customers are experiencing the same issues.
Do not buy this laptop - especially for how expensive it is. A waste of money and time for a lousy product that clearly had no QA inspection.

I got this laptop after having Sony VAIO for 5 years. I have been using this laptop for about a month. I got amazed by how fast this laptop is and how nice the keyboard is. You will get everything your want in this laptop. Screen quality is great enough. The laptop is very solid. It has very loud and high quality speakers. It has the hello windows camera, which allows you to lock the laptop by facing an IR camera. It is very light. The active-stylus pen works perfectly. Battery life is great. It can stay with me for about 7 to 8 hours with no issues. I use high performance software, and this laptop gives me a great performance overall. It's worth every penny. I am very glad that I made the right decision and purchased this laptop. I highly recommend this laptop. From my perspective, this laptop is the best for 2017.

I am a forever user of Windows system and always envied Mac users. Not any more, I got HP Spectre X360 with windows ink supported. I am highly satisfied the battery life. it does last 13 -14 hours with one full charge. it is light, really light and stylish. Good Job HP! I am also a big fan of HP since you guys made a terrible desk top PC in early 1990's. My patience got rewarded. Keep doing!!

A Worthy Ultrabook

I have to say this first: this has to be one of the nicest feeling keyboards I have ever typed on. The experience is exquisite. It is a joy to type on. The trackpad isn't quite as good but Windows Central did a post on how to force Microsoft Precision drivers on the trackpad with a hack. I think that is going to make a huge difference once I do it. So all is not lost with the trackpad.
Initially, I had overheating issues but they went away after the first day and it has been cool ever since. The screen is fantastic and I don't see a need to do 4K screen when 1080p gives you significantly better battery life and still looks gorgeous. Also in regards to multimedia experience, the speakers can get quite loud and sound good for ultrabook speakers. Finally, it boots very fast and the Windows Hello camera logs you in very quickly.
I don't really use it in tablet mode or use the pen so I can't speak to it too much. I could have gone with a more traditional notebook like a Dell XPS as a result. However, HP charges significantly less for the same internal specs. Even though they charge less money, they still provide a premium experience. I was very impressed that it comes with a nice leather sleeve to hold the notebook and the pen. It might become my main travel notebook since it is quite a bit lighter than my Surface Book and would still let me take notes when I needed to.
I really don't have any reservations recommending this. If you can get it on sale which seems to happen very often, it's a great deal for a solid machine. It would be nice if I could get the Black Ash color with a 1080p screen. Not sure why HP decided to tie color to the screen resolution.

No bloatware, fast, quiet, excellent display. It boots up in seconds and I love the facial recognition to log on. Very attractive. Very solid construction. I have never been more pleased with a computer purchase. The built in HP software keeps the computer up to date with driver updates etc. Nonintrusive. I got a Bluetooth mouse and love that I don't have to use a dongle in one of the USB ports. The Bluetooth attaches to my stereo so easily to play music. WiFI is very fast. charges wuickly and I am very pleased with the battery life. I do not have the 4K display, but I think it is a great display. Love it!!!!

Power in a small package

Wanted a small, powerful computer with windows to use while sitting in an easy chair. My wife and I both have great tablets & desktop computers but the tablets are limited in what they can do in comparison to a full blown Windows10,16GB Ram, 512 SSD. I looked at & read reviews on the13 & 14" Lenovo's, Dells & HP's. then went to BestBuy to look at them in person.
Having had good experiences owning all three brands I have no particular leaning toward one or another. It really boiled down to total package vs price for myself. I bought it at $1379 but today (the day after) I see it is on sale at $150 lower price...So, off I go to the store for a reduction. Now about the computer, the setup seemed to take forever. Windows had a 4GB update which to me was large & made me wonder how long this unit had been sitting on the shelf. Then after downloading and updating Windows, HP popped up with 10 updates of their own (Bios, Wlan etc etc.) I installed 6 of them, set 3 for later review & skipped one that looked like it could cause a problem. After all that was done, my WIFI stopped so I did a restart and that cleared up that issue. (The computer shuts down & restarts several times during the entire process). I noticed that the fan does run occasionally & it can be considered loud, but it doesn't run very long and the noise doesn't really bother me. I also noticed that one of the two power plugin locations didn't connect unless it was pushed in very hard, I didn't notice this until I saw my battery decreasing after two hours of updates and several restarts. When I pushed it in hard, really hard, it worked but I switched plugin location and worked fine there.
So with these minor items out of the way, I spent another 8 hours on the computer and found that the silver color was a sleek, great looking unit but the lettering on the keypad could be bolder to make the keys easier to identify when typing. I found I had to tilt the computer up in the back so I could look more directly at the keypad. Not a major issue, but a little more boldness on the keyboard lettering would certainly be more productive then having a sleek keypad with lettering that cannot be seen. Another tip though, if you're like me and prefer a mouse, just use a bluetooth mouse, plus it saves you a port. I purchased a Logitech M535 Bluetooth Mouse and it paired immediately & works great. I found though, that I had to stop the trackpad from operating while using the mouse otherwise the cursor ends up wandering all over the place. The simple way to stop this is simply go into your Mouse/Trackpad settings and click box on "Disable when external mouse is connected". This unit is powerful & fast inside a small frame and it works great & was exactly what I was looking for & at a lower price than it's competitors.

This will be my third hp laptop. The first I bought in 2005 so I am very familiar with their products. The other 2 sort of failed me but honestly...these things were not built to last 10 years...maybe 3 and I had the other 2 forever.. Anyway this product is great. Fast, sleek and decent view. I didn't get the 4k view because I figured it would hinder battery life. The pen stylus is awesome!! As far as concerns go...I researched this laptop for months before purchasing it and the whole over heating thing and fan thing..I only heard the fan a few times when the auto-download of programs begin going hard. Once I disabled that and chose when and what programs to upgrade (no bloatware) it was smooth sailing. The track-pad is a bit wide for me..but still very usable.I also disabled the Mcafee right out of the box and never installed the free "protection software" also. I waited 4 months to write this review so now I can say that it seems like a decent piece of machine for the almost $1400.

Disappointed with Battery life and Heat

I was looking to get a new laptop for work , especially given some upcoming travel to the UAE from California.
I needed something with long battery life - good ram, good storage and performance to handle development tasks.
I was headed to the latest Dell XPS 13.3 given all of the rave reviews - but the sales person talked me into the Spectre which I had also been looking at.
The Spectre boast 15 hours and 15 min battery life - which I was not expecting at all - I was hoping for around 8-9 hours.
I was excited to get the laptop - installed all the software i was going to need (Office, etc). and began using it in the office - it worked 'okay'.
this was always plugged in - so didn't notice the battery drain yet - nor the heat. (although I could feel some heat coming from the left-sided fan).
At home I decided to use this unplugged on my lap to research some websites.
First thing I noticed was the heat getting generated from the Fan side of the unit - so much heat so that it became uncomfortable to keep using this on my lap - and this was minutes after booting the laptop up for use.
Then after a short period of time (20-30 minutes or so) i noticed that the battery had already drained down 15-20% or so. This seemed rather quick.
the next day i decided to perform a more adequate test for battery draining.
http://www.windowscentral.com/generate-battery-report-windows-10
That site provides an easy way to get a nice report on what your system is doing in regards to battery life ......
While at work I turned on my laptop - validated it was fully charged and began my test - I disconnected the power and let it run -
I was in Power Saving mode - using External Monitor (so no active laptop screen drain) and only doing some light Browser surfing and Email.
After about 2 or so hours I was already at 50% of battery drain.
The aforementioned post showed I would get about 4-5 hours of Battery life out of this unit. No where near the 8-9 hours I was expecting and considerably off the 15 hours of 'normal use' advertised.
and the Heat generating from the CPU was climbing over 90C - far more then the MAX of 80C recommended.
I tried all of the 'recommended' solutions of updating all my drivers, BIOS, removing McAfee - etc. none of these seemed to help.
I will be returning this unit for a refund as I am unhappy with the results

I returned the product due to quality issues (uneven hinge, display issues - think of what happens to a display when you press too hard and see the pixels light up and then just stay that way)
I own the previous generation spectre x360 and it's been a solid machine these past 2 years. Which is why I know I probably got a lemon.
The i7 configuration just flies and can handle anything you throw at it. The fans do kick in quite early though - and they're loud.
The included pen is average, my kids loved drawing things on it. But that's as useful as it gets. Handwriting a few notes was an unpleasant experience.
HP has done a good job overall in improving the original soectre, but I'd be wary of the QC checks on their products. Get the Geek Squad protection if you plan to buy this product.

This computer is hard to beat. Windows hello and windows ink is simply awesome. The speakers are excellent for a laptop. The boot up speed and processing for every day functions is great. The only 2 areas where this laptop is slightly lacking is the battery. I prefer all day, or at least all work day computing on a single charge. These laptops do exist. I purchased this along with a 13.3. inch LG gram. The LG's screen brightness and color along with the battery life have this computer beat. Both of the computers have their own strengths. I would recommend this computer but as mentioned it could do a little better in the battery department.

This is ONE Exceptional work of Art and Technology all wrapped up into 1 mighty fine, top of the line instrument, way WAY ahead of all other company laptops "including" HP themselves! I never thought I would live long enough to see a super fast operating computer much less built into such a tiny, light-weight laptop as this! HP... How can you possibly build a laptop better than this one? I'm just stunned!

Within 24 hours, I had to return my HP Spectre x360 (i7, 16gb). While it was priced competitively with its ultrabook peers, the quality of the machine was just not there. First of all, I noticed I had a faulty webcam on the first day. Using both the Camera app an Skype, there was a pink hue around my image. HP tech support, though helpful walking me through updates, came to the conclusion that the webcam was faulty and the device should be returned.
In my 24 hour with the device, the fan was very very noticeable as many of the other reviewers have mentioned. The pen was not very consistent and the sleeve is nice, but like the pen it was a big gimmicky for me.
I must say though, I do like the power adaptor's design!
I ended up exchanging it for a Dell XPS Pro 13 2in1 and am now very satisfied with my purchase.

This HP Spectre x360 2-in-1 13.3" Touch-Screen Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 16GB Memory - 512GB Solid State Drive has been excellent so far. It rivals everything else I've seen by having the bonus digital pen and Windows ink for photo editing/drawing, and with the i7 processor and 16GB of memory, it is more than fast enough. If you're looking for a Windows10 laptop, then consider this one.

I have a macbook and wanted to give Windows 10 a try. Should not have made that mistake. Spend the extra few hundred dollars and get something built to perfection. The model I received had uneven hinges, poor battery life. Fan kicked in more than 4 times in the few hours i had it and I have never even heard the fan on my macbook pro ever since i got it. The spectre had the i7 sitcker and it was put on slanted. Also updates took about 2 hours long.

It is a pretty laptop. But if you don;t want to constantly have to uninstall touch screen driver and restart your computer, DO NOT BUY. Also if you think the highly rated audio system actually performs OK, DO NOT BUY. But if you want an otherwise intermittent touchscreen and mediocre audio and a pretty but expensive laptop, this one is for you.

I loved this computer until it stopped turning on. There was no event that precipitated that problem. A $500 motherboard replacement and I got it back from the HP service center with a recovered system, now rife with software errors. I've had other computer brands last much longer. If you are going to buy this computer, get the extended warranty, you will need it. If you don't trust this review, do some research: search the HP support center forums for issues with the Spectre. Many of them are motherboard replacements. Good luck!

The laptop looks greats but it has major issues. I went through two of them and both had a terrible coil whine. It could be heard over videos playing, and it was very annoying. Both had the fans running on full blast while it was idle on the home screen. The second one has a loose, clicky trackpad. Returned it right away.
