Powerful, Portable! Great Laptop for Students

I was reluctant to replace my old dinosaur of a laptop (5 years old now, It happens to be an HP Envy 14 (2011), and it's still running beautifully, but it's too heavy to carry in my backpack everyday). As a full-time software engineering student, I need a computer with me at all times... I was shopping for a REALLY LONG TIME because I wanted to find the perfect replacement. I finally ended up on this model. Just to give some context, here are the other models on my candidates list: Macbook Pro Retina 13" Lenovo Yoga 900 Dell XPS 13 Asus Q series 13" Now, here's why I chose the HP Spectre x360 over them: 1. ALL THE CONVENIENCE FEATURES!! (x) Touch screen (x) 360 degree hinge (x) Backlit keyboard with an activation key that's ALWAYS LIT!!! (My old laptop had pretty much the exact same keyboard, but if it was dark, I had to search for the key that turned on the keyboard lights) (x) Lightweight (x) comes with its own sleeve in the box 2. The Brand: HP and Dell are the highest selling consumer PC manufacturers, so its more than likely you've already heard a horror story warning you to stay away from them! Not to worry! HP and Dell make computers that most consumers will enjoy. Namely, they make 'affordable' computers, and A LOT of them. HP and Dell are really good at making good computers, but if they can make more money cutting corners and making a junk computer that breaks often, they will. With high end computers like the Spectre or the others on my list, you don't have to worry about that as much because their main focus isn't making a computer as cheap as possible, but it is to make a computer that someone who has a higher computer budget would want to buy. Whenever my friends ask me for computer advice, I always say, "you get what you pay for." My last laptop was an HP, so I trust them a little more (subjective, I know). 3. Customization This computer happens to have a traditional BIOS that allows me to utilize fastboot for Windows 10, or traditional boot for whatever else I need to use on it. Right now I have Ubuntu and Windows 10 running. HP makes it very easy to enter system diagnostics and Boot Options, which, for me is essential. NOTE: even though I say that this laptop is easy to customize, that doesn't mean it's not easy to use. In fact it's the least nonsense 2-in-1 laptop available. Everything is there for you. Nothing more, nothing less, no gimmicks. Here are some tips if you're still unsure about what you want to get: 1. LOOK FOR METAL - as a rule of thumb, metal indicates that the manufacturer 'believes' in their product. Here's what I mean: take a look at all of the MacBooks that are available now: Apple puts a lot of work into their computers, and they want to house their workmanship in something durable. All Macbooks have a metal body. If a company is cutting corners on the inside, they will DEFINITELY cut corners on the outside. Plastic body computers will also flex whenever you pick them up. However small that motion is, it's wearing away at the components on the inside. So go for metal. 2. Talk to a blue-shirt (or even a Geek Squad agent if you can) - They know what sells well, and more importantly, what gets returned... 3. A computer is an investment. You get what you pay for. Feel free to reply to this review if you have any specific questions about the computer :) Hope this helped!!

I wanted to keep this laptop. The first thing as others I got a different model in the box than was on the outside of the box. I was told by HP that it had the same specs. I tried it and after getting my warranty fixed with HP, it workd great. It is very good looking laptop. The screen is great. Some have said the sound is not great but my was very great. I had decided to keep it but then it started getting very hot on the bottom. It was so hot that it made my leg red. HP wanted me to send to them and they would fix., but I was within my time to take back, so I did. I will say best buy didn't even try to trade it out or get me into another one. I wish it wouldn't have gotten hot. HP did say that there was something wrong with my laptop. It was very nice laptop and the battery on it lasted great. There are new models out and I think they should be good. Run virus protection on it and if it gets very hot, take it back. Hope this helps.

Beautifully made device with high build quality. There seem to be a few annoyances mainly related to driver issues and Windows 10 - I.e.track pad and system clock have issues. Also the arrow keys on the keyboard are too small. Overall, though, like the computer a lot.

After much research I thought this was the best 2 in 1 laptop to buy. I liked the keyboard set-up, speed, resolution and solid construction of the computer. However, there was a problem with the computer displaying a date in the future when logging on. You could manually reset it, but if you forgot, email would list the future date. There may be a BIOS update that could correct the issue, but I felt a brand new computer should not have this type of problem. I like the large track pad, but I thought the edge of the computer below the pad where you rest your hand was slightly sharp.

We like this computer quite a bit. It's light and I love the touchscreen. The trackpad takes a bit to get used to--it's a bit jumpy--but otherwise, we're very happy with this purchase.

Got this model at an amazing price on Best Buy. Looks and feels premium. I actually prefer the ash gray color but was not willing to shell out extra money for it. Battery life could be better but other than that, I do not regret this purchase.

I've been using this laptop for about 7 months now. I writing this review on it. I like the updates on the newer models, but this is working great for me. Beautiful display, excellent keyboard, good trackpad (I'm not a fan of trackpads anyway). I use it laptop mode about 98% of the time, the other 2% is between tablet and tent. I love being able to use it in tent mode as an extra TV on the kitchen counter or to watch a YouTube video of a new recipe.

I bought this laptop for my wife to use during a deployment. It's made of metal, very thin and pretty light. The screen is bright and clear with that QHD screen. It's paired with enough ram and processing power and the solid state drive to effectively do anything a student needs without a hic-up. I know it's overpowered for that, but if you want no lag for basic desktop activities, this baby fits the bill.

This is a great laptop and the screen is amazing. I have a Surface Pro 3 and debated between this laptop and a Surface Pro 4. Decided on this one because there is more bang for the buck AND it comes with a keyboard! The Surface is not good for using on your lap where this one is a typical "laptop" pc. Only complaint would be the power cord which is a typical "brick". Wish it was smaller like the Surface.

I now have this computer for almost a month. It is super fast. The screen resolution is beautiful, and the battery life is good. I have no problem connecting it to my home router at all, and the switch to Window 10 is pretty easy. I really love this laptop.

I like this laptop. It seems fast and has all the extra features I wanted. It can handle being used almost continually. The only problem is that sometimes I have trouble with the display drivers when I take Windows updates. When I used HP support by phone, they were good. But I tried HP support by chat, and it was a complete disaster both times. They didn't solve my problem but rather created even more problems. Plus it was very time consuming. The second time it took hours for us to do almost nothing. I think the chat people are less qualified than the phone reps. I would never use HP support by chat ever again.

I really liked this laptop. It's super fast, touch screen, powerful resolution, beautiful design, handy positions and so light. However, My laptop was infected from the day one I bought. The Blue Screen appeared twice at the first day after I bought it. Then I went to BESTBUY and they offered me to order a new laptop but I was in hurry and decided to go with MAC. I have the MACBOOK Pro right now. However, The Hp Spectre is wayyyy faster and powerful than the mac but the battery on the mac last way longer.

I've had my Spectre for over a month now and I love it. Super light, super fast start up, very portable and beautiful display. Getting lots of use out of the 2 in 1 feature and rotating display. Only wish the keyboard backlight was automatic. Love it!!!

Someone unwieldy, heavier than I would like. It folds well into a tablet, and you have to set windows to tablet mode to see the entire screen. The laptop was also slower than I would expect. It seemed to struggle with multi tasks, and took quite a while to boot. I went in and deleted some of the bloat, it helped but still not very brisk. Screen was very pretty, and sharp. Keys were good, but a bit close together for thicker fingers. Not sure I can recommend this laptop, good try, and not bad for the price point.
