I didn't need a smart TV, as I prefer to use an external Chromecast. The only drawback I've encountered so far is that the sound is a little less clear than I'd like, due to the placement of the speakers. It's not bad, but at some point I'll probably spring for an inexpensive sound bar or speaker pair to improve things.
