I felt the need to write a review to combat some of the recent negative reviews. I feel like I stole this thing, since the price (on sale) was amazing for the quality of the product. I'm not sure why some people wrote that it wouldn't work with the iPod Touch 4G - as mine is working perfectly. I did upgrade the firmware, but it was working fine before I upgraded.
For those who complain that it won't play video for Netflix and some other 3rd party apps - that is controlled by those companies. For instance, many companies will not allow their video to be viewed outside the iPod as it could be outputted to a computer/DVR and recorded. I have a WD TV Live Plus - and you need to get the Plus version to show Netflix because it has macrovision encoding - thus deterring would be pirates. Some YouTube videos won't show on the WDTV because it says that the owner will not allow the media to be shown on an external display.
What this device does beautifully is: show stunning pictures, act as a clock and an alarm clock with multiple alarms, and even stunningly plays back HD media without an iPod (provided you transcode it into the format it likes (and with caveats - see below)). It has great features like playing back music during a slideshow and the SRS sound is actually quite stunning from a little device like this. It auto-dims depending on room light - even having an option for it to enter standby mode when the light in the room goes down to 1 lumen. Practically the design is smart, with a place in the base to store the remote so you won't lose it, and the iPod dock stores away when not in use (and is adjustable so it will work with your case on your device).
What the device doesn't do so well: SD cards must be formatted to FAT32, not NFTS - so if you want to include a video over 4GB, you will have to split it up into two separate files. Also, it doesn't seem to like large HD videos - I've locked the machine up twice trying to play a 2GB HD MOV that I ripped to test, and never got it to successfully play (it will, however, play on smaller file sizes). Also when the device is in "Direct iPod Control" (for instance listening to Pandora or shoutcast), the screen on the device stays on the message that you are in that mode, and doesn't let you look at your photos - a big bummer, as I listen to a lot of internet radio through my iPod and wanted to view my photos while outputting the sound. In addition, you cannot set the alarm to wake you up to iPod music - but only 8 included sounds or a custom MP3 file that you have to have in internal memory or attached memory (SD, etc). You cannot adjust the color of the Time/Date, and the white doesn't show well or at all when placed on top of many of my photos (I would prefer a yellow with a black outline). It also seems to stop power to the iPod and restart it when you go through certain menu items - this is really annoying as the iPod "beeps" loudly several times while navigating some menus.
But with all of this said, I purchased this device to charge my iPod and use it as an alarm clock/ photo frame. And I got a device capable of so much more - it is truly more a portable media player (providing you have the media in it's particular format). I told my wife that she can take it to school and have her students watch a video on it when she splits into small groups (always been a problem since the TV in class is big and distracting to other students when in small groups). In all, I'm very pleased and it is truly worth double what I paid for it.

After having a rather poor experience with Sony's version of a DPF with an iPod/iPhone dock (which I subsequently returned), I've been in the market for a DPF that will also playback the content from my iPhone and charge it as well. I purchased this Insignia model and I must say I am very impressed! In addition to having a relatively easy to use interface, it can playback all the stored content (pictures, videos, music, podcasts et..) on my iPhone while it charges away on the dock. I can also run a slideshow of my pictures while working which is nice. It's become a permanent fixture on my desk. It's got some nice alarm features as well and allows you to set your own music to wake up to. Might have to get another one for the bedroom! They even included a remote that slides into a compartment on the base of the unit. Congratulations to the folks at Insignia for putting alot of thought and consideration into your product design...Nice job!

Insignia™ 8" Digital Photo Frame with Apple® iPod®

Overall it is a excellent digital frame. I purchased it to be able to view mvi movies that are 720 hd from my Canon digital camera SX30 IS. The box states that it does read that format but it DOES NOT! It says FILE FORMAT FOR THESE MOVIES NOT SUPPORTED! My Sony handycam camcorder also uses this format. So my purpose of purcahsing this frame went out the window. It does support all other formats from other digital camera movies and the jpeg pictures are sharp and clear. My ipods play well on the frame also and I can control the songs and playlists with the remote provided. Also, my flashdrives with mp2 music on them is well received also and can play while viewing a sd card with just jpeg pictures on it. So far I have purchased 3 digital frames that said that they support the mvi format 720 and none of them do that. So I guess we will just have to wait for the digital frames to catch up to the newer technology.

Got it for 1/2 off the regular price, it was worth it! I am impressed with the handiness of it. I like how the iPod charger can pop in and out and the remote has it's own storage, no more lost remotes!
There is lots of space for pictures, so no having to see the same pictures over and over again.
It is easy to set-up, the manual is clear and straight forward.
The only annoying thing I found is when it's set on the energy saving mode (senses the amount of light in the room and shuts off if it's dark), if you are watching tv at night and the room is dark, it will turn off and on the iPod will make the plug/un-plug noise.
The kids love that the videos on the iPod can be played on the screen; the quality isn't bad either... Oh and they love that you can play music along with the slideshow.

This thing is pretty cool. I wanted to get my wife a digital frame and an ipod dock. I had no idea I could do that in one gadget, until I came across this thing. The sound works well enough and the pictures are very clear - better than I expected. It has this weird thing where it will shut on and off randomly - I am not sure if it has some kind of light sensor that shuts it down when it gets dark or what...
But overall, great product.. I would definitely recommend it to others!

I was pretty reluctant to buy this product because I am a big fan onf Bose and Sony. After I read the reviews which all seemed pretty good I decided to give this device a try. I have been please since day one. I bought this product for my wife who is not a technology junkie like myself and she loves it. Realy easy to use, quality of product is not bad at all and it works as advertised.

Bought two of these on sale for Xmas gifts, but one ended up back with me. We lost the ipod 5th gen I was going to use with it, but unit has worked with the ipod touch (1st gen) and runs with that. Overall photo picture very good and it can be set up to view slides/movies from a SDHC card, with a clock overlay as well if you are looking for a place to put it and remove something else. There are plenty of minuses as well, the only way to actually turn it off is to unplug it, the control buttons will put it in standby, which seems to means it will turn itself back on when if feels like it. Also can only access ipod media on the touch, not the streaming content as would have made a great Pandora player since this touch has no speakers. You can always run a headphone 1/8 connector cable to the units line in, but that detracts from the neat little ipod dock.
It does play most video files, even displays some hd files from my canon 130is, but with no sound however. It does play normal SD formats from apple - MOV/H264, have not tried avi/wmv files but don't see why it wouldn't play them as well.
Summary, if you need an 8 in picture viewer and have an old ipod around, this is the way to go.

I bought this frame during Christmas holiday for a great price. It works well and was easy to setup. My only complaint is after you haven't used it for a while, the time comes up on screen and you have to toggle it to make it go away. Maybe there's something I can do in settings to prevent this. Overall, good frame for price.

This product is AWESOME! I love it! GREAT picture quality, I love the remote, iphone charging dock, ipod player. It's got different options for picture displays, which includes the time and date, which is cool. I also use the alarm clock! It's got the 2GB internal memory, which is plenty of space for my pics. I got myself this product and one for my boyfriend that is deploying to IRAQ. We both love it!

Got another for ourselves!

We were shopping for a Christmas gift for our nephew and came across this Digital Photo Frame that was on sale for about a third its normal price. I noticed the features and resolution were similar to others that were much more expensive, plus it had the iPod dock and remote. We were so impressed that we ended up ordering 1 for us and 1 for our nephew.
It is a little bulky for a tabletop frame but that's what also makes it sturdy and not tip over like those that just have the flip-out leg. The remote comes in handy when you're showing it off to friends and family.
Unfortunately, the only "feature" missing is the ability to show your pictures stored on an iPod touch which, before I bought it, thought was the whole point of the iPod dock! Otherwise, it is loaded with features and I'd still recommend it.

Excellent Frame and Media Player

I bought two of these for a Christmas present last December. They were on sale for $40 each. I was looking for a simple docking station with a speaker that could also be used as a AM/FM radio. I ran into this deal and could not resist getting two I don't regret it for a minute. It's a good device, nice picture frame and good sound quality. It does not have a radio build in but I was able to use the TuneIn radio app from iTunes. I use one with an itouch 3G and one with an itouch 4G. I had to upgrade the firmware to be able to use some of the features with the latest itouch series. It was simple to do, with a download from the manufacturer website and a blank SD memory card. Have little problems with it. The only flaw I noticed is, the frame will turn on randomly by itself even after you turn it off.

Excellent digital photo frame for the sale price of under $50! I had no problems with setting it up with iPhone 3GS. The only minor "issue" is that there are not many other 3rd party apps supporting iPhone/iPod TV out functionality. Photos/Videos, iTunes, iPod music, Youtube App work great. The alarm and energy saving features are nice additions! Overall, an excellent product!

I spotted this unit and thought what a great idea. I needed a charger for my IPhone 4 to use at work, and the bonus is that it is a digital picture frame, capable of playing video, music, and photos, from my IPhone!
I was going to pick one up for myself, so I asked my son if I could use his RZ reward certificates. He suggested he should buy it for my Christmas gift! He ended up paying ten bucks for it, so he is very happy, and mom is happy to have a great little gadget!
Initially, it would only charge my phone, and play music. But after the firmware upgrade, it is now showing all video, music, and photos from my phone 4, so it will work with the newer phones. You just need to do the firmware upgrade, and it works perfectly!
This is a great little unit. I am very happy with it. I like how the Iphone charger pops back in the unit when not needed, and there is self storage for the remote.

This digital photo frame is awesome. The pictures look great, and the sound is clear. Everyone who comes to the house wants one. It works great with my Ipod touch, but I will say that it's not compatible with the 4th Generation yet. They will be releasing an update for this in the future, but at this time, it's not available.

I bought this as a gift for my father in law. He couldn't be happier with it, is cheap, is easy to use, and the quality of pictures it's awesome.
Remember to buy a memory card for it though, because it does not come with an internal memory.

Pretty nice, esp. for the Christmas sale price where I got this essentially for the price of just how much I would have paid for a picture frame alone. The picture frame shows nice color details. Remote somehow has its own mind, but works most of the time. The speakers are okay, but not too great. The iPod interace is nice, although I wished that picture frame and direct control worked at the same time. When you use direct control, you cannot start a picture slideshow. Mine didn't come with a user's manual, but I could find it online. Some setting are counter-intuitive, esp. the one for Auto Standby feature.

I got two of these as family gifts and after loading one up with family pics kept one for myself.
The picture quality is really good, bright vibrant images and it looks good on the desktop.
Remote hides in a slot on the side to keep from losing it.
Ipod dock is really nice though I can't use it at work. I'd say the iPod operation is a bit confusing and you'll have to read the manual to figure it out.
NOTE: It will not work with current versions of the iPod Touch properly. With my older iPods I can get full control over the iPod through the remote but with a new generation iTouch it basically just acts as a set of external speakers. I don't know if that's a firmware upgrade fix or not but its annoying as the person I gave it to wanted it for just that purpose.
Overall though I grabbed these on sale for $50 each and its a heck of a deal at that price. I wouldn't have got it for the full $150 though as Sony have an almost identical one at that price that looks sleeker and has a few more friendly features.

Got this frame on sale right after Black Friday. Great value, beautiful picture, and handy internal pop out ipod dock. Was tricky to set the time, but that should be easy to work on. Otherwise enjoyed. Nice size screen!!
