Perfect phone mount for moving between vehicles

I purchased this product as a compliment to the other iOttie dash mounts I already own. While the iOttie Easy One Touch 3 is the dock I use in my own car and the one I recommend to my friends, I have been on the lookout for a solution that I can easily swap in and out of different vehicles while I'm on the go. The iOttie Easy One Touch docks have such a sticky and secure suction pad that it's a hassle to be constantly switching between vehicles. This product is exactly what I've been looking for to meet my need for no-hassle transportability. ---- Unboxing & Initial Impression ---- As I've come to expect from iOttie, the packaging was clean and simple, with detailed instructions for those who don't have an intuition for gadgets. Included is the vent mount itself as well as two metal plates to attach to your iPhone. The first plate is circular and about the size of a quarter. This plate has a glossy finish with a concentric, brushed aluminum circle on the inside to make it more visually appealing. This is the smaller of the two and designed to be attached to a caseless iPhone. The second plate is a larger rounded corner rectangle. Its finish is less appealing than the smaller circular plate, but that's okay since it's designed to be used on an iPhone with a case, where it sits between the phone and case, never to be seen. Both plates are surprisingly thin, especially when I saw how firm a connection they make with the mount. I tried the larger plate designed for use with a case in both thin and thick cases and was impressed by how much I was able to shake the mount around without my phone detaching. It will certainly maintain its hold while driving even on less than ideal road surfaces. The mount definitely lives up to the stylish appeal evidenced by the product photos here on Amazon. The aluminum bezel really makes it look great on the dash. The mount itself is very small, which is important to me as I will be carrying it around while traveling. Attaching the mount to your vent could not be easier. There is one spring loaded button on the mount that you push to open the clamp that grasps one of the vent blades. When you have it in position, you simply let go of the button and the mount grips to provide a sturdy connection to the vent. Make sure you push the mount all the way into the vent before letting go to provide a firm connection that won't wiggle about. ---- Pros ---- - Above all, I continue to purchase iOttie products because of their customer service. Back when I purchased the original iOttie Easy One Touch, I had one of the arm mechanisms fail. iOttie sent me a replacement free of charge (including free shipping) instantly. - The choice of metal plates gives the consumer flexibility between a smaller plate that is less obtrusive on a bare iPhone and a larger plate with greater hold, which is needed for an iPhone sporting a case. - This is the most visually appealing vent mount I've found on the market. It looks really great sitting up on the dash. iOttie has done a great job designing their products. ---- Cons ---- - The smaller metal plate for use without a case comes in only one color. If you have an iPhone in any other color than black/gray then you might find the metal plate an eyesore. iOttie, perhaps you can provide a choice of colors in the future to match the range of iPhone finishes? This is a non-issue for me, though, since I always protect my $950 iPhone with a case. - All vent mounts, this one included, leave you with a less optimal viewing angle when compared to a dash mount with a suction cup. With a vent mount like this one you are restricted to the range of motion of your air vent to get the phone angled directly at you. With a dash mount like the iOttie Easy One Touch 3, however, you have three-dimensional control over the viewing angle to ensure the phone is positioned exactly how you want it. This is a concession I was willing to make, however, as I needed a small form factor mount to use while traveling. - Price. I was surprised to see this mount costs as much as the iOttie Easy One Touch 3, since it's so much smaller. While I'm no materials expert, I'd guess this might be due to the fact this dock includes magnets and metal plates, which might be more costly compared to the nearly all plastic design of the One Touch 3. Regardless, the iTap Magnetic Air Vent mount offers a solution to a unique problem (transportability) that I'm more than willing to pay for when backed up by iOttie's customer service. ---- Conclusion ---- The iOttie iTap Magnetic Air Vent mount is a great solution for those who cannot or do not want to use a dash mount with a suction cup. In my case, I bought this vent mount to use while traveling where I'm regularly moving between different cars. In this situation, it's a hassle to bring my iOttie Easy One Touch 3 around with me as it's hard to get off the dash once adhered, plus it's bulkier. The super strong hold between the phone and the mount, iOttie's great customer service, and the appealing design of the this product made this purchase a no brainer for me.

So I will start by saying that I am a fan of iOttie products and there customer service is outstanding. This product was sent to me in return for my honest review. This was used and tested with my Samsung Galaxy Note 5 in an Otterbox Symmetry case as well as a Spigen Ultra Hybrid bumper case. I will start with the vent clip. The magnet is intense and true to its 7 lb hold. The magnet is minimal, solid, and sleek looking great in any vehicle even without a phone being on it. The vent clip is cushioned to be sure not to ruin your expensive vents and the hold it has on the vent itself is solid. The magnet part rotates with ease so you can put your smartphone in a landscape or portrait orientation. Now to the magnet that is attached to your smartphone. Here is where unfortunately in both my cases that I own this product won't work out for me. The product comes with 2 metal pieces for your smartphone; 1 square and 1 circle. Along with 1 piece of clear film that adheres to your phone or case to protect direct metal to surface contact. The Otterbox Symmetry case was just too thick for the square magnet to suffice and stay true to the 7lb holding force when mounted on the vent clip. I did have success using the smaller circle metal piece for the outside of the case but I rather not have the magnet be shown. The Spigen Ultra Hybrid has a clear TPU back. Extremely thin and worked great with the metal piece and holding true to the 7lb test however again for me I personally do not want a metal piece being shown on my phone. The metal pieces are super thin and will fit perfectly between any case and phone. If you do not mind the metal piece being shown on the back of your device then this product is definitely for you. Although not aesthetically appealing if you can live with it being there and shown then look no further for a vent clip mount for your smartphone in your vehicle. For me the product was a great idea and iOttie still produces great quality products that you can clearly feel and see with this clip however I just dislike the metal piece being shown on my device.Perhaps iOttie could have even went with a slightly thicker metal piece to adhere to your smartphone or case to allow a better grip for the magnet. I own two iOttie windshield mounts for my smartphone and find it very safe and convenient while driving as a place for my smartphone to rest. Another thing to keep in mind is that the vent clips (depending on your car) will cause you to look down slightly as oppose to a windshield mount.

About as good as it can get for a vent mount

Please note that I agreed to review this product in exchange for being sent it as a sample. Prior to this review, I already owned an iOttie Easy One Touch 2 Mount, easily the best the car phone mount that I have owned (and, I have owned several). At first, I thought perhaps I wouldn't do the review, as I'm satisfied with the iOttie mount I already have. But then, I realized that my wife doesn't have a car mount for her iPhone 4, so here is my review. The big picture - if you have a phone and drive a car - YOU NEED A MOUNT. What mount to buy? There are plenty of choices, including many cheap mounts available. I'm a cheapskate, and I've tried many of them. With this type of device, I've come to the conclusion that you get what you pay for. There are some items that you can buy cheap and get away with, because you don't use them too much. But, for a car phone mount, used every day, kids tugging on it, etc. my feeling is that you want to get a good one if you can afford it. The quality of the iOttie magnetic mount is excellent. The two pronged grip which holds the mount to your vent (or other attachment point) is very strong and clamps firmly. Also, the magnet is quite strong. It holds the iPhone 4 firmly in place while driving. No noticeable vibration. Also, iOttie's customer service is excellent. I know this because I have purchased 2 iOttie mounts previously, the first of which I had to return because it didn't work in my vehicle. The company was very responsive and accommodating with the return process. Overall, as compared with the iOttie Easy Touch 2 mount that I already have, I would say that this mount is nearly as good. The iTap magnetic is high quality, and very easy to use. The hardest part is getting the phone out of your pocket after you've already sat down! And, by itself, the mount that attaches to the vent is, to me, far better looking than the Easy Touch 2. It is discreet, and slick looking unlike its oversized brother. One con, however, is that in order to use the iTap Magnetic, you have to install the metal pads to the phone. Depending on how this is done, the resulting look can be less than desirable. One tip for those who might mount it to a vent - You might be inclined to mount the phone centrally on the vent, like I did when mounting to our Subaru Outback vent. When I did so, the vent flopped immediately down due to the weight of the phone. If this happens to you, choose to attach the mount instead lower on the vent, so that when it does flop down it is already near the bottom of its travel. I hope this review helps you to decide what's right for you. Good luck.

My phone: Pixel 3xl with a Google fabric case The magnet was pretty strong through the case when I had the plate in the middle of the phone (more on that below) and the vent clip was more sturdy than I expected. It felt really secure popping it on and off with some slight vibrations here and there. Overall, probably sticks to its description, I love how its super minimal and almost stealthy. After installing it and getting home, I throw my phone on the pixel stand (I have 3 of them and love them for the phone) and notice... nothing. I realized quickly that that gigantic plate must be interfering with the signal. I tried a variety of spots and finally find the sweet spot, right over the google "G" at basically the bottom of the phone. It pushes the phone/case out just enough that it sometimes would slide off the charger or disconnect but I got the hang of it and settled. Now, forward to my ride to work, it felt solid but my driving at times is a bit aggressive and turns would tilt the phone enough that gravity would then swing it down. I'm thinking the lack of friction with the fabric case and the magnet is the reason it slid so easy but in the end that was the deal breaker. My beef isn't necessarily with the product itself but more with the description lacking any cautions for people that wirelessly charge their device. I ended up gifting it to a friend so I didn't deal with any customer service or anything. Sorry it didn't work for me!

    Great Vent mount

I've used iottie's window mount in the past and liked them, so I decided to try out this magnet mount. The design is pretty simple, use a strong magnet to hold the phone. It is less bulky then their itap mounts. It comes with 2 types of metal plates. 1 option is to stick the plate to the outside of the phone case. 2nd option is the put a larger metal plate in the inside of the case. Pretty much everyone uses a case for their phones and some are bulky which will make option 1 more reasonable to those people. I have a plastic flexible case, so i chose option 2, where I put the metal plate inside the case, where you stick the metal plate on the phone. Option 2 does come with a small plastic protector where you put the plastic tape on the phone and then the metal plate on top of it to prevent the metal plate from scratching the phone. The Mount where you put on your car's vent is pretty sturdy. The clip is lined with cushion to prevent the clip from damaging the vent. Easy and simple to use, no hassle of sliding into a phone mount on the windshield like traditional mounts. Mounting your phone on the magnet is pretty simple, just line up the metal plate and you'll feel the mount "grab" the phone. Taking it off is easy too, just pull it off, but be warned the magnet is pretty strong. I have experienced where I pulled the vent clip off when I was trying to dismount the phone. In my 2 weeks of using it, I never experienced my phone dropping. I do avoid potholes while driving because they can damage you car, but Im not going to deliberately drive through one to test out how strong it is. A few cons: -Depending on your car's vent, it can limit how much you can rotate it. Basically, the clip can only rotate so far until the vent prevents it. Mine is slightly pointing my phone upwards which can make it hard to read. -If you have a BIG phone (like a iphone PLUS) it WILL block A/C from blowing at you you during hot days.

    Great, inconspicuous phone mount.

Phone: Galaxy S7 Edge, no case Pros: It takes up so much less real estate in my car. Small little button in a vent is much better than some of the bigger mounts out there. Holds the phone very well. Never had a single problem with it adhering and staying. Was very easy to set up and the instructions were clear. Simple and effective. Cons: Adding the magnet to the back of the phone is necessary, but it prevented me from using my wireless charger. Not a deal breaker for me because I don't use a wireless charger often and can easily avoid it. If you're a lover of naked phones, you will need to add a magnet to the back. This could be a turn off. I'm normally a full naked phone guy, but the little circle(and protective slip that is almost nothing) didn't bother me. It even adds a little grip to a slippery phone. The instructions clearly mention how to take the phone off the mount (take it at an angle and not directly off). If you ignore the instructions, the clip will come off with it. I only did it a couple times. Didn't see any damage to the phone, clip, or vent. Comes off easy when you use an angle, as the instructions say. Overall, this is a very good mount and I'll continue using it as it takes up so much less space than the previous one I was using. I enjoy the more clean look to my dash.

I have used quite a few different car mounts for my phone. Most of which used the suction cup mounting system. I was worried that this phone would be too heavy for this mount to hold on to since I use a heavy Zerolemon battery case, but is has more than enough holding power with the strong magnets. The clip that holds onto the vent is also very strong and wont damage your vents because the only part that touches the vent is rubber. It turns out that this mount has more than enough power to hold onto this big phone. One mounting plate was enough to hold my phone since the case of thin rubber material itself. The phone has not fallen off yet even on rough roads. I love how I can adjust the phone to landscape viewing for navigation use so easily with a simple rotation. I highly recommend this car mount for any sized device! Super simple to transfer it from one car to another! It is by far the cleanest looking car mount that I have ever seen. Works just as well as it looks. Highly recommended!!! :D

    Good and aesthetically pleasing mount

After using this mount for a month now, I feel that I have a good feel on the pros and cons of it. The mount itself is pretty small, Id say the surface of the magnetic part is in between the size of a quarter and a half dollar. It is black and rathe inconspicuous when you attach it to your car vent, In the package, it comes with two different options of magnet attachments: a larger metal slab that you can insert inside your phone case, or a small round one that can be attached to the outside of your phone/phone case. I opted for the larger slab inside my phone case. Surprisingly, the magnet was very strong and kept a pretty good hold on my phone and I have a iphone 6 plus! Sometimes when I make sharp turns, it does rotate and dangle on its side until I flip in upright again, but all in all it is a mount that I would definitely recommend for those who don't want a large ugly phone mount on their car.

I have a magnetic phone holder in my car and its got a huge suction cup mounted to my dash. Whenever I drive the husband’s vehicle I forget to grab it or i’m stuck mounting it on the center of the windshield which limits visability. I love this vent mount because I can still use my phone for directions and I can see who is calling so I can answer phone calls through the bluetooth in the car. Adding a metal plate to the back of multiple phones means whoever is driving can be hands free and safe. I srongly recommend setting up you directions and ckicking go before pulling out into traffic. The husband needs the sound on so Siri can tell him when to turn. I just follow the directions on the screen, it also gives me an idea what kind of traffic patterns I’m getting into.

Great unobtrusive and reliable phone holder.

Finally, unobtrusive magnetic phone holder by iOttie that feels and looks as solid as it actually holds on to a phone. I have Moto Z Play with Speck Clear Candyshell case on it, so the weight is substantial when combined together. This magnetic holder have no issues holding up the phone while driving, even on rough road. There is lots of room to adjust phone's angle horizontally or tilt vertically . The phone also can be placed horizontally, vertically and anything in between. I own other mounts from iOttie, and they always worked great and reliably, but the part that holds the phone was always on my way, even when phone wasn't in it. With this magnetic holder, you can barely notice it when phone is removed. And when phone is in it, you can't see it at all. Very simple and effective design. Just what a driver needs.

Finally something different from the masses

I have used about 4 other magnetic vent clips before using this one. The constant problem I had with past clips was having to readjust its position in the vent so that it would stay on right, if at all. As others have noted, this clip uses a spring so that it feels far more secure to the vent. I haven't had any of the issues my old clips had. My only criticism is that the actual surface of the magnet could be bigger. Yes, the magnet works fine but if you accidentally tap a corner if your phone harder than you want then the magnet isn't strong enough to prevent the phone from dropping on the floor. My last clip had twice the magnetic surface area and therefore was much harder to knock down accidentally. Regardless, I've been happy (as I have with other products from this company) and would recommend it.

I have an Otterbox and I placed the magnet both ways as directed and the one that works would require me to stick the magnet directly to the outside of my case... which I don't want to do. Placing the magnet on the inside of the case made contact not as strong as I would like.. I would expect my phone to fall off of the clip if I hit a bumpy road surface. So I am debating whether I want to use this clip, because I don't want sticky residue on my phone case. It comes with an adhesive film that is suppose to protect your phone from the magnet being directly on the case, but it peeled off as soon as I put it on the clip due to the weight of the phone.

Handy little gadet..better than sticking a huge thing on your windscreen..however the magnet wouldn't work when placed inside the case. It may work with some cheaper thinner cases but not the rugged one I have for my Note 8.. it also was hard to stick on the outside of the case as the plastic has ridges and is not flat.. biggest drawback is phone will not charge on wireless charger pad with the magnet on the case.. I have to take case off to wirelessly charge.. my phone is also a bit too heavy to stay at the angle I want when stuck on the holder.. good idea but lacks in implementation.. alas can't return it since magnets are now stuck to my phone case..lighter phones and cases may work a treat if you plug in to charge

Very strong magnets that holds my Galaxy s8+ with an otterbox case in place even on a bumpy ride. I would recommend to use the metal plate for outside case if you have a thicker case. Bear in mind that if you buy this mount, it will block air coming from your vent. And also, the metal plate at the back of your phone will prevent wireless charging capability of your phone. Those are just two things that I found being on the negative side of this mount. But I love using this mount. Very easy to install and adjust. Very solid and high quality design. Highly recommended if you don't want a mount/phone sitting on your dashboard or windshield.

Wow, this thing sticks. I own a Nexus 6 and it's probably one of the top 5 heaviest phones on the market weighting in at 190 grams. This magnetic mount have no issues holding up the phone. I tried swinging and twisting my arms to get the mount off but the phone is held on tight The phone definitely won't fall off while driving. I also own magnetic mounts from other manufacturers and this one is much better designed because it uses a spring clip mechanism (somewhat like clothes clips) instead of just friction mounting, which sometimes slide get loose and slide off as you go over rough roads. Overall it just works. Easy to assemble, use, and have no parts that can fail.

The iOttie - iTap Magnetic Car Vent Mount Holder had made using my smartphone while driving a breeze. The holder easily clips on the your air vent and securely holds your phone while allowing your focus to remain on driving. It is a small holder that can easily be removed and stored when not in use, unlike the bulky phone holders on the market. I am happy with my purchase. The only negative thing I can say is that the instructions are not as clear as they could be, so if you need to ask the store associate how to put the holder magnet on your phone. If you don't do it right you could end up messing up your phone.

Observing my families behaviors in their vehicles made me search for a simple solutiin to phones in laps, cup holders, balanced on dash for navigation. I have always used mounts for gps and phone to avoid losibg eye contact with the road, but I travel 75% in my profession and observed my familiy not doing the same which is a safety concern. Seconds count and can take away lives - this simple magnetic mount is clean, powerful, adjustable, and the mount can act as a stand for phone in a table, ottoman, etc. when not in a vehicle. Small price to pay to change my families behavior and improve their safety on the road.

I was hoping to remove my iOttie Easy One Touch Universal Car Mount Holder from the windshield of my 2014 Outback and replace it with the iOttie - iTap Magnetic Car Vent Mount Holder however, because my vents are vertical and the way they are situated in the dash, my steering wheel blocks access to the phone. My husband tried it in his 2016 GTI which has horizontal vents and enabled the phone to be in a good position for the driver. However after using it for a week he noticed that the holder itself started to wiggle and became loose. He said the magnet was great but the grip used to attach it to the vent was weak. I will take some photos and hopefully I'll be able to add them later.

Highly Functional - iOttie - iTap Magnetic Car Vent Mount Holder The 1st thing that struck me with this product is the ease of usage; you remove it from the package in less than 2minutes, its installed and working. It looks durable & study. Another quality of this product is that it provides unhindered accessibility to the phone, the eye level due to the location means you sight is not off the road, in essence it ensures the security of the driver and the passengers. It’s very simple, sizeable not bulky or intrusive. The phone rests well on it as the magnetic strength is remarkably strong. The manufacturers gave me this product to test and provide unbiased assessment, it works!!!

This product works very well. I love the magnetic part. I don't like the idea of sticking a metal disk to the back of my nice iPhone though, so I taped it in to the inside of my leather phone cover with a single piece of green painter's tape. Disk never touches my phone and it is very thin and not noticeable. Phone can get warm on heater vent but that is just what it is. I recommend this product if you have nowhere to stick a suction cup version to your dashboard (most cars don't have a big enough smooth surface).
