Todd Phillips' "Joker" is without a doubt one of the most effective films showcasing the origin of the iconic DC supervillain as it tends to set itself upon a real world in 1981 as a failed standup comedian named Arthur Fleck looks for companionship and care despite the world stepping down on him along with facing ridicule until he embraces the very persona the world will forever recognize. What makes "Joker" set itself apart from other comic book films is that it's more of a character study done in the manner of an independent film drawing influences from Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver" & "The King of Comedy". But it also works as a reminder that anybody can become a persona like the "Joker" especially when society in general can turn their back on an individual.

A fantastic film with strong character development. There’s not a moment that I didn’t feel as if I was in Arthur Fleck’s shoes, feeling all of his emotions. The film makers do a fantastic job portraying the build-up of events that fuel his transformation into the Joker. The cinematography was superb as well. Many of the shots mixed teal and orange, giving a well complemented image, as far as color was concerned. With an aspect ratio of 1.33:1, the presented image takes up more of the screen, so the objects in close up shots appear larger on the TV screen, which looked really nice in my opinion. This release IS real 4K as well. Joker was given a true 4K digital intermediate, and also shot digitally, primarily in 6.5K, with only some shots in 4.5K, and 3.4K. So the 4K UltraHD format definitely reaches its full potential with this movie, and man does it look crisp. Dolby Vision is on point as usual. I would not skip this one!

Only my opinion. If you have simular taste in movies as I do (Big Chill, El Topo, Squid and the Wale, A Skanner Darkly) and own a shovel then pick up Joker and grab your shovel. You're gonna dig it. I wasn't and am still not a big Joaquin fan, it's a me thing. But his ability to change or become someone else makes me wonder if he has a true personality of his own (he has become water Bruce). His display of talent here is vulgar. Daniel-Day-Lewis, Gary Oldman, Gregory Peck this here's Joaquin you guys will get along just fine. Todd Philips is another madman. I'm not thinking Kubrick. But if he makes a habit of thrashing pigeon holes into craters by ignoring them completely and not Philling them (had to) someone might.

Whoa. This one was a little darker than I anticipated. The trailer gives a good overall idea of what to expect but I went into it thinking it would be another comic book style movie based around the Joker and it was way more grounded in reality than the comic book world. You already know Joaquin Phoenix brought his A game to the role and it'll be interesting to see if they introduce him into the DC cinematic universe to overlap with other characters because he crushed it in this movie. Given the fact that Snyders movies were considered too dark of tone, I can't believe this was green lit. Amazing acting and movie overall. 4K delivers a great picture and truly shows the details where they count. Highly Recommended but not for kiddos or anyone afraid of clowns.

Please note: 5 Stars for the film and the performance 4 stars for the home video release (details below) JOKER is one of the rare films that lives up to the hype. Joaquin Phoenix's performance is mesmerizing. At first, you can't help but sympathize with his plight. But eventually he crosses a line where empathy cannot continue. His actions become all the more shocking the more deeply he descends into madness. Unsettling and brilliant. Incredible direction by Todd Phillips, masterful cinematography, a gorgeous, haunting score. Why only 4 stars? Because Warner Bros did not include Todd Phillips' audio commentary on the 4K disc or the Blu-ray. It's only available on iTunes, meaning you would have to purchase it again just to get that special feature. For the premium price we pay for 4K discs, all special features should be included. That being said, JOKER is a 5 star masterpiece, with one of the most iconic performances ever captured on film. Go see it.

If you’re expecting a maniacal homicidal killer with grandiose plans, this movie isn’t it. Instead, this is about a man falling through the cracks of society, searching for some connection with the world. Joachim Phoenix portrays the Joker as a sympathetic and shunned mentally ill man who slowly embraces the insanity of the society around him. In many ways, this movie mirrors the movie Taxi Driver, also with Robert Deniro, in that the question becomes: how responsible is society toward the mentally ill, and what happens when it’s neglects pushing someone over the edge. This movie is commentary on this, and it’s done with sympathy towards its protagonist. By the end of the movie it is to understand why some people become what they are, and how even deranged murderers can become hero’s to the downtrodden and cast aside.

JOKER is an unbelievable piece of solidly excellent cinema. From the great detail in shaping this character study of a troubled individual, and the awesome performance of Joaquin Phoenix, it does not surprise me that this film received 11 nominations for the Oscar. JOKER is not an easy movie to get through without being shocked and horrified how our society can be so biased and cruel to reek such unfair and horrific treatment on an already lonely, troubled individuals. Although there is no way I will condone that such a villain as JOKER, created out of the cruelty of his fellow man, should exist, even though he is a comic book villain, this remarkable film details how such a troubled person can change in defense of his unfair treatment by others. JOKER is remarkable cinema of tragedy from prejudice taken to its very extreme. A warning...this movie is not for the faint!!!

I thought they did an outstanding job of creating this version of the Joker. And Joaquin Phoenix did an excellent job in his role. Personally, I think this was the best movie of 2019, period! Some of the things I thought made the movie so good were the fact that the writer(s) knew exactly where they wanted to take this film! And in so doing, it draws the viewer in from the beginning and keeps you there. Everything in the movie has a purpose and the audience gets to see the evolution of the Joker and how he arrives in such a dark, pitiful place. It's this character development and the fact that the movie primarily revolves around the Joker, that makes it a different type of movie, versus something like the Dark Knight, with Heath Ledger. All that being said, the movie also looks fantastic in 4k. I would highly recommend this movie.

The film itself is very good, though it tries hard at times to avoid acknowledging is comic book roots, it still implements enough elements in a satisfying way while trying to tell a story that is mostly its own. Even if you find the story and presentation too be too derivative of the Scorsese films that inspired it, you can at the very least appreciate Joaquin's stellar performance. As for the picture and sound quality, I would consider this to be one of the best 4k discs in my collection. The film was beautifully shot and you are able to take in every detail with little to no grain or digital artificacts. Sound is also exceptionally well mixed, the music is powerful but does not drown out the dialogue, and a nice range of ambient sounds that enhance the immersion when heard in surround sound. All in all, I would highly recommend this film and its 4K disc.

As a fan of Batman and reader of Batman comics for pretty much my whole life, I was a bit skeptical on a movie about Joker in a world where Batman doesn’t exist yet. In most Batman/Joker tales, Batman either creates or inspires Joker to a certain extent. I won’t spoil it, but the approach taken in this movie was most definitely unique and worked for what they were trying to do. The failures of mental health treatment back then can still be applied to today in a lot of ways. A lot of things start to go wrong when the character isn’t getting meds anymore. The illness he has, laughing uncontrollably in out-of-context ways was also an original idea. It was creepy and uncomfortable. The acting was phenomenal. Phoenix cared about the role. The laugh he developed was awesome. Not much else to say. Watch it.

The film pulls you into it’s world right from the start and doesn’t let you go until the credits roll. Joaquin Phoenix delivers an amazing performance from the moment he hits the screen and portrays Arthur masterfully, so much so that by the end you really are rooting for Joker. Although the film is a much more physiological thriller than comic book movie it does the Joker character justice by letting us see, for perhaps the first time, how someone could transform into a criminal super villain. I loved the film (as you probably already guessed) and as far as the picture and audio quality of the 4K Blu-ray are concerned, it’s top tier for sure. You won’t regret picking this up.

Love this movie! I watched it once in theater when I was very hesitant on watching another clown movie since IT: Chapter 2 was also out around the same time. Joaquin Phoenix’s role as Arthur Fleck was phenomenal, as soon as I left the theater I knew I had to own this movie and the Steelbook Blu-Ray was exactly what I was looking for. The same people that I went with to watch this movie in theater all came over for movie night to rewatch it, what a great purchase. We all loved it just as much the second time around, it’s one of those movies that you cannot help but to clap at the end of the movie and feeling like Woah! What a great job from the musical score to the dancing scene captured on the back of the steelbook. Highly recommend this movie to anyone from a new physical movie collector to the collector’s with extensive discs.

Wonderfully enough, homage is paid to most live-action incarnations of the Joker throughout in very subtle, yet gratifying ways. To keep it spoiler-free, I will say that Joaquin Phoenix absolutely delivered. Every supporting character no matter how big or small delivered powerhouse performances. The music (songs and score) were so organic and added so much to the film. This is what all movies, comic book or otherwise, should strive for. Brilliant direction, brilliant acting, and a movie that will absolutely stay with you long after the credits roll.

As a DC comics fan, I was hesitant when I heard about a Joker 'origin' movie, I scoffed at the idea because the character doesn't truly have an origin. Then as the movie approached release and trailers came out, my interest gravitated to seeing the movie. I can admit that I was wrong to doubt this project. Joker is unlike any 'comic book' movie that you have ever seen. I won't spoil the movie nor the various theories regarding to what transpired through the movie but I can say that it's beautifully directed with awe-inspiring cinematography. And then there's Joaquin's performance . . . He deserves an Oscar. In fact, Joker deserves ALL of the nominations wins. This Best Buy limited edition package REALLY shines among my movie collection and I am fortunate to have been able to obtain it.

Look.... this movie is all over the place, it varies from people to people. Some love it, some hate it. This movie is an ORIGINS story, so you know mostly everyone finds that boring. This movie puts real live problems in there and tackles some high subjects that are still dismissed and brushed off in real life. Ignore what the stupid news said, this movie isn’t even violent or gory. It does have its moments but that’s barely shown. DO NOT go in this thinking you’re going to get flashy cgi fights like the REST of the marvel movies. Get that out of tour head cuz most of my friends went in thinking that and they were dissapointed. This is one of my favorite movies of all time now! It’s great, story driven and carried beautifully by Joaquin Phoenix!!! Definitely recommend

Joaquin Phoenix is definitely one of the best actors of our generation! If you listen to him in interviews or just watch him on screen you can tell he really puts his all into every performance. I’ve seen “Walk The Line” probably 10+ times and have always loved it and to be completely honest i’ve never been a DC movie fan but seeing that he was playing lead role it was a must watch for me and definitely did not disappoint! If you really pay attention they’re a lot of clues in the movie that creates an awesome back story and shows where the feud between Batman and The Joker begins. I’m truly excited to see the sequel! Also the steelbook packaging looks awesome and I had to drive to two different Best Buy’s to get my hand on one but all in all I feel it was worth it.

I could go on about this movie for hours but the key points are that the movie touches on the actual face of mental illness and instability instead of shying away from it like most do. It doesn’t romanticize it either, it puts it in your face and makes you uncomfortable with it. It’s a master class in story telling and the different viewpoints will keep you guessing as to what’s real and what isn’t. As far as a DC movie goes, it’s got the makings of a comic movie but it’s not your traditional one. It only hints at DC Comics characters, it only shows you the tip of the iceberg and nothing else. Personally I prefer this to not be considered a Comics based movie but a Comic based movie. A stand-alone telling of the greatest villain in comic history.

The 4K transfer is simply amazing. Sound is perfect. Colors are true. The performances are amazing, even those all around Joaquin's tour de force acting class. My only beef is absolutely zero Bruce Wayne was needed (Thomas Wayne was fair play) for this and both prominent sequences could have been removed and the movie would be better for it because, now your messing up Bruce. However, I guess they intended us to see it from Joker's point of view and so a case could be made. Fun to argue about. But, there's no argument that this is the best movie based on a comic book character ever made and it shows that DC's strength (completely opposite to Marvel's) is that its greatest strength lies in its remarkable villains.

Joaquin Phoenix's elevates an already great film with a performance that utilizes all his talent to bring to life a complex and tortured character in a really powerful way. The initial reception may have been divisive for some critics, but don't let that be the reason you miss out on this film. This is one to see and judge for yourself. The 4k presentation of the film is excellent. This film was shot and mastered in 4K (2160p) so there is no up-scaling from a lower resolution for the UHD Blu-ray release and it shows. Dolby Vision HDR included and looks great as well. Was able to redeem the included code via Vudu for a 4K with Dolby Vision digital copy with no issue.
