Customers are saying

Customers love the sound quality and bass of the LSX Hi-Res Wireless Speakers, frequently praising their big sound and smooth trebles. However, some users experienced issues with wireless connectivity and found the app to be less than satisfactory, impacting the overall user experience. The ease of setup and compact size were also noted as positive aspects. Improvements to the app and wireless performance would enhance customer satisfaction.

Outstanding speaker with the smarts of a gerbil

I am using these speakers in the near field on a desk. I have them plugged in to one another via the supplied Ethernet cable and am using the optical input direct from my computer as a source. Additionally, I have them plugged in to my network via Ethernet cable as well, although this makes not a bit of difference, but we will get to that. The outstanding: Amazing sound quality. The flaming garbage: Everything else. Set the speakers up? Good luck. Took three tries, which apparently is pretty good. Do you want to stream to the speaker? Airplay and Spotify Connect both decay into unlistenable garbage after a few songs. Crackling, popping; absolutely terrible. I’ve had them wirelessly set up on two different routers, now, and it makes no difference. Apparently hardwiring the speakers doesn’t actually make a difference, as it is still using the wireless connection. Why? I can only assume that the people at KEF who designed this were half drowned and in the process of completing the act. It’s inconceivable why this should be the case. Regarding the noise, I have quite a few Sonos devices in the house and none of them have this issue. Ever. My use case is primarily computer to speaker, so I will rarely run into this being an issue. However, given the price, this is borderline unacceptable. The apps are, in two words, almost useless. KEF Control is fine, I guess. When it detects the speakers it’s fine. If you use two or more devices don’t expect the sound profile to transfer over. I tend to use the remote anyway. The stream app is absolutely useless. Tidal or uh, your local music off a NAS, I guess? Check the App Store ratings, they’ll tell you all you need to know. I purchased a Sonance 10” Subwoofer to go with these, and it’s a monster of a system for my office. This is the gateway drug to great audio. Hard pass on the apps, though. I will likely never buy another KEF active speaker again because of this.

    INSANE audio!

INSANE audio upgrade for anyone in the market for “studio speakers”, the audio coming out of these are insanely crisp and clear. Only “con”, if you will, is the startup process... Bit of a hassle, but took me maybe 15-20 minutes, once done I was able to play audio immediately. Adding the 8” sub to these very soon!

Most of the other reviews here touch on the main points of these speakers, they have a phenomenal sound for their price, and after a nearly painless setup you're good to go. The problems arise when you use the app for these speakers, the KEF Control or KEF Stream apps. Not sure why they decided to split them up, but one acts as a remote and EQ customizer while the other allows for connection to roon, Qobuz, TIDAL, Spotify, etc. My first time opening the app, it said I needed a firmware update. Upon starting it, the app crashed, leaving my speakers unusable. I had to restart the app multiple times to fix the issue, and was only able to resolve it by connecting the speakers to my PC and downloading the firmware manually rather than over wifi. If I have one recommendation for these, use the ethernet connections. Connect them to your router, and connect them together with the included cable. I've read many complaints about the 2.4Ghz signal dropping, and the tedium isn't worth your time. Do yourself a favor, avoid the headache, enjoy the higher bandwidth, and connect them to each other. Once you get past all of the setup, it doesn't take long to recognize the impressive soundstage these produce. 70W for the LF and 30W for the HF, 100W per speaker is wonderful for a near-field listening setup. The Uni-Q drivers are as warm and accurate as ever, with a fast and punchy bass that makes you wonder how the vocals maintain their clarity. Oh, that's right. The tweeter has a separate magnet and stays clean from the mid-driver. I added a B&W 608 Subwoofer to the setup thanks to the sub output on the master speaker, and my bedroom setup feels nearly perfect. Love these speakers. If KEF fixes their app, I'd rate these perfectly at their price point.

Not As Good As I Hoped

To be completely honest, I almost got fed up with the firmware update process to the point where I almost deleted this entire review and was simply going to post a recommendation to purchase another speaker and be done with it. But here we go…. Packaging is sturdy. Not cheap, but not the most impressive I’ve seen. Outside box had delivery damage but everything inside was intact and unscathed. Owner’s Manual/Quick Setup is worthless. The best directions they give is to download the app. Just what I want. Another app on my phone. Make that two so you can connect directly to streaming services! See below for more information on why this app is lacking. This is my first set of wireless speakers that are separate (except my Sonos setups). In the past I’ve had one powered speaker and a speaker cable running between the two. Positive to this is there’s no cable tethering the speakers together. The negative is each speaker needs to be within 6 feet of a power source since the power supply cable is that long. Unless you add an extension cord. These speakers do run off WiFi and Bluetooth sources for wireless play, but also have the capability to be hard wired with an Ethernet cable, ¼” auxiliary input, and optical input into the master speaker. Of course this means that the master speaker needs to be close to the source if hardwired. There is also a USB output for charging capabilities. I assume for a phone or mobile device that you have connected. I can’t see much more use than that for a USB in the back of a speaker. It also has a wired output for a sub-woofer. For being as small as they are, these speakers are heavy (not in a bad way)! Weight is balanced low in the speakers which should minimize any accidental tipping. The speakers have a threaded connector on the base for mounting to a speaker stand. There are no mounting capabilities on the back of the speaker. Non-skid feet on base of the speaker keep it firmly attached to the surface it is sitting on. They seem to be built solidly. No screens on the front of the speakers. In order to set up speakers, you need to direct connect to them via a mobile device through their WiFi. **Be advised you may have to temporarily change your devices settings to not switch WiFi connections automatically through this process. I guess you may want to make sure your screen doesn’t time out as well. Apparently this app can’t work properly when the screen shuts off. *** Something in the app process is slow, causing me to search a couple times for the WiFi connection and the speakers during setup along with making the on screen buttons slow to react. A little annoying but the process finally worked. ***Don’t go putting the speakers where you want them yet!!!*** Mine needed a firmware update. And the only way to update the firmware is to connect both speakers together with the provided Ethernet cable. And then the firmware crashed! The app is having a hard time locating my speakers on my network throughout this process. This is the only set of KEF speakers we have on the system and all suggestions by the app were followed. The app seems to lock up during setup and firmware updates, only to work again if you close the app and reopen it. Then the firmware froze. I then had to follow the steps to “recover” which are a complete pain, including having to hard wire the speakers into my router with an ethernet cable. If this is the process I have to go through for every update, I’m out! So now I’m sitting here babysitting my phone for “up to 20 minutes.” I’m now about an hour into setup. My only hope is that this update corrects some of the above issues. I have more wireless speakers, most of them being Sonos speakers, but I have five brands total that I own. This by far has been the most tedious and time consuming process for setup I’ve ever dealt with. Ok! Speakers set up! Woo hoo! The sound was initially crap. I’m still not impressed with the highest volume. It should be able to go up louder. I thought the speakers sound were muddled and lacking especially during higher volumes. However, the different audio files I was listening too caused that to be more noticeable than with others. It seems audio sources with lower quality are very noticeable because of the speaker quality being so high. The acoustics of the speakers is pretty impressive though. You become immersed in a wall of sound, rather than hearing two separate speakers. The equalizer has some awfully weird setup abilities and it’s all in metric. It would be nice to switch to the imperial system for distances. There are no true “equalizer” settings. The remote control needs a direct line of sight to the master speaker, but if it is, it is functional and responsive. At the price of these speakers, my expectations were high. I believe there is a lot of potential with these speakers, but with the better versatility and relatively cheaper alternatives, I would lean towards an established company like Sonos, especially if I were expanding my system to the whole house. But if you are using this as a standalone system, the quality and features are worthwhile. The app is lacking. The simplicity of setup and updates is lacking. But the quality of the audio cannot be overlooked. Three stars for now and I would cautiously recommend these, but only if you catch them on sale.

So..speakers..well to put it plainly these are something else. The balance in sound, the easy connectivity/the many different connection options, the style is real slick too. I also like the weight of the speakers..you can tell it’s speaker thats gonna last based on its weight, but that’s my opinion and not everyone is going to agree. Everyone has their own taste so these might not be for you and that’s okay!! Now overall for these speakers..i love them and im so happy i finally got them.

Unbelievable soundstage from these small speakers. They sound 4x their size. Crystal clear dynamics and decent bass, considering the size of the driver. I did pair them with a B&W AWS610 subwoofer and it took these speakers to the next level. Only gripe I have is that they don’t automatically turn on from a signal input. I have them wired to my tv in my master bedroom using the optical input but you have to turn them on manually.

Great pair of bookshelf speakers that work both for a simple addition for tv setup or 2 channel audio. An additional subwoofer would be best to get great low end sounds, but still sounds great without. Definitely outperforms many mid range soundbars felivering a great clarity and sound space.

Excellent speakers but not compatible with KEF connect, only works with KEF Stream app. If you have other KEF speakers that operate with the Stream app, great. Work exceptionally well as splurge worth computer speakers but if you are adding to your KEF ecosystem....wait for the LSX II that work on the KEF Connect app.

KEF has long had a track record of great speakers. They don’t stay satisfied with what they have and continuously innovate. When they came out with the LS50 system, I was blown away. Wireless sound and streaming capabilities in a high-end speaker system. Then, I heard about the LSX wireless system which was supposedly to be the little brother of the LS50 system. I just had to try them out. All I gotta say is…wow. The unboxing experience was pleasant enough. They’re packaged well. It comes with two power cables, an Ethernet cable, and a remote. The remote feels a little cheap and plastic compared to the rest of the ensemble. First thing that you notice when you take them out of the box is the size. They are really compact. They measure 9.5 inches by 6.1 inches by 7.1 inches. The longest dimension is less than 10 inches! Hard to believe that so much technology could fit into it. I was also curious what kind of sound something this small could make. More on that later. The next thing you notice is just how nice the design is. It is really an elegant and minimalist design. The gloss white colorway is just so clean and I love it. The front of each speaker has a 4” Uni-Q driver and a ring that shows what mode the speaker is in based on the color. KEF claims the “Uni-Q” driver improves stereo imaging across a wider listening area. The back has a subwoofer output and a panel of buttons/ports that differs between the master and slave speaker. The panel of the master speaker has a button for bluetooth pairing, a button for master/slave pairing, a reset button, optical-digital input, 3.5mm aux input, subwoofer output, ethernet port, RJ45for the master/slave connection, USB, and AC input. The panel of the other speaker has just the RJ45 for the master/slave connection, button for the master/slave pairing, and AC input. The ring of light in the front changes colors depending on what input you want. If solid white, they are operating in wi-fi mode. If green, spotify connect. If blue, bluetooth mode. If purple, then solid purple. If yellow, then AUX mode. You can use the app or the remote to change the inputs. Unfortunately, the speakers cannot automatically switch to the active input. You have to manually switch using the app or remote. Set up is easy enough. You have to use the KEF Control App. You get the speakers set up to the WiFi network. Full disclosure, I think the app is disappointing. It is possibly one of the biggest weaknesses of the whole setup. You can use the app to change the preferences such as whether the speakers are on a desk or a stand, how far the speakers are from the wall, how much furniture is in the room, etc. I didn’t play with it too much but I do think there differences in sound based on these settings. You can reverse the speaker orientations from right to left and vice versa. You need a separate app called KEF Stream to connect to Tidal or Spotify. I think one could have done the job. The most important thing: the sound. It is AWESOME. These little speakers can get LOUD. In my living room, the speakers sounded just as good as some of my floor standing speakers. They sound much larger than you think. In regards to the stereo image, I was blown away. The trebles were smooth. The bass not overpowering. The mids were great. If you want more bass, then you can connect a subwoofer. I really thought the sounds were balanced enough. If you attach the Ethernet cables to connect the speakers, they are supposed to transmit 96kHz vs 48kHz wirelessly. My ears could not hear too much of a difference. However, I preferred the wired connection for more reliability. Pros: Amazing sound with balanced bass, mids, trebles Sleek and elegant design Great build quality Lots of input sources and easy to switch between them Pretty easy to set up Cons: KEF Control app is disappointing You need separate KEF streaming app to stream Remote needs work Manual switching between inputs All in all, a great speaker system from KEF! It’s the peripheral stuff that needs work. Although these minor things are annoying especially with the premium you are paying, the sound and design really makes up for it.

I got these to pair with my 2019 iMac. They replaced a Bose Companion 5 setup, which I passed along to my son. I am already a KEF fan based on the pair of LS50s in my dedicated 2-channel setup. The LSX in white look great & sound even better. They are the only ones without a cloth exterior. There are numerous ways to play music on these speakers. I’m primarily using a USB out into a Schiit stack with a dedicated DAC. They sound great with Tidal & Spotify. No issues handling regular teleworking video chat duties either. I paired them with an NHT powered sub. Got these for $999…on sale…which runs thru 7 Feb. I would like to say that BestBuy is killing it durin COVID with same-day delivery using Roadie.

I’m in love with these little wireless LSXs. They pack a nice punch and fill my room which is about 17 x 20 feet. Setup was easy in my case once I made sure they had a healthy strong connection to my router. I use them for streaming music and for movies in the living room. Now this space is dance central. As long as the are connected to the router in the room and not the one in the basement (main router) they have not sound quality issues. Sometimes when the speakers are tethered to the mesh router further away they can loose a little quality since they depend on a good connection to produce that amazing sound they can produce. Definitely recommend them. Worth the money!
