Would Not Recommend - KH: MoM "Misses the Beat"
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In a word, this game is... bad. My wife picked this up for the Nintendo Switch, and frankly, I'm surprised Square Enix was able to mess up something as simple as a Music/Beat game this badly. The optimization for the Switch is horrendous. Out-of-the-box, the synchronization is off, and there's no automatic calibration in this game. You first need to play, realize you're seconds ahead of/behind the beats (which you need to hit exactly, similar to other Music/Beat games), and then go into a separate menu and... "guess" what +/- timing is necessary to make the game work correctly? You'll need to do this several times. Ours worked best at -5. That took 4 tries to figure out. Even with passable synchronization, many of the songs (even at the beginning) have a very loose definition of the idea of "matching" beats to the song. Sometimes the beats feel completely separate from the song you're listening to. This is especially noticeable at higher difficulties (of which there are 3), when some songs just opt for a long-repeating pattern of attacks independent of the actual tune of the song you're listening to, as if the developers just got tired of working halfway through and decided, "Yea, this is enough. Just put 3 guys in a row 10 times in a row, that sort of matches the song." Spoiler: it doesn't. For the songs that DO work, my wife is having fun. But I can see her confusion in some of the levels, and I wholeheartedly agree. It goes beyond "difficulty" into simply questions the choices made in the game's development, and the quality of the work put into it. In addition to the above issues, there is exactly zero exposition in this game. As a long-time KH fan, you'd think it would begin with some in-depth explanation - SOME story to explain why you're diving into Kairi's memories and experiencing the story of KH through song, but... nothing. There's no opening cinematic, no cutscenes depicting your motives, no preparation. You just pop up in a basic Gummi Ship and start picking levels, and every now and then you get Kairi telling you something you already know through a cutscene you've seen a thousand times before. Very disappointing that there wasn't ANY attempt at storytelling or an overarching story at the beginning of the game. After almost making it through the KH2 levels, my wife had enough, and we decided to exchange it for the PS4 version so she could at least complete the game without the synchronization randomly changing on her. Best Buy Customer Service told her this was possible, so we brought the receipt to a BB location and we... were suddenly told it wasn't. Then we went to ANOTHER location and were told it was perfectly fine to do so, so we completed our exchange and got the PS4 version. Very strange. Overall, the PS4 version is much better synchronization-wise, but it doesn't fix the other issues this game has at its core, or the lack of care/attention put into it. There is a lot to do and a lot of songs to play (though it's missing some official remixes - how can you NOT include every single piece of official KH music on such a simple game?), but the KH:MoM falls flat in far too many aspects. Maybe you'll still like this game if you just want to listen to KH music, but the game quality just isn't up to par with other titles, and I would highly recommend skipping this half-game until it stops being full-price.
