This is a really great story with great animation. Most of it is practical animation instead of digital animation which is really awesome. The design of the characters made mating them and a couple digital things here and there seamless, which.... on the one hand made it a very unified film, but on the other hand, I think that if you are going to go to all the effort they went to make the film hand made, that it should have looked a little more hand made. I mean, it all looked awesome, but I wish it had a little more human flaw to the imagery. Personal choice. But as I said, the story was awesome, so... great film.

I love anime and Japanese popular culture, so I was eager to check this out, but at the same time, I doubted I would like it because it is only available with English dialogue and I typically only watch anime in Japanese. Happily, the voice cast in Kubo does an outstanding job of bringing the characters to life. The animation is gorgeous, bright and colorful, plus the Blu-ray presentation looks great. One of the best aspects of this movie was the soundtrack, which was just beautiful. If you like animation or enjoy movies that are about Japanese mythology, then you should really enjoy Kubo!

I loved this movie. The art style is fairly unique and a real feast for the eyes. The story is great and takes a few unexpected turns before coming to beautiful and moving ending.
It's about a boy named Kubo who has a magic gift for making paper and origami figures come to life by playing his shamisen. Kubo lives in a cave with his mother, a beautiful but very sad lady. After breaking the rule about curfew, his mother disappears and he goes in search of his father's armor.
The story is a lot more complex and interesting than my synopsis, so I encourage you to watch this movie.

We saw this movie in the theater when it was released. We saw the 2D version of the movie and the whole family, two adults and two elementary-school children, enjoyed it. We purchased the DVD because it's a movie worthy of more than one viewing.
I won't do a review of the movie as many others have already done reviews, most praising it. I will say that if you have the ability to play a 3D DVD, the 3D DVD is the one to buy. It enhances the visual effects in the movie. Don't worry if you don't have access to 3D. It's a great movie no matter whether seen in 2D or 3D..

Kubo is a great movie. The animation style is a joy to watch. The story and setting are great. It's an all ages movie with a classic defeat the bad guy concept. But with it based on Japanese mythology and lore. The goals and methods to defeat an enemy broaden as the story progresses. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys animation just for the craft and artistry involved and like adventure mixed with a quest. The moral of the story being that you may not always need a sword to defeat your enemies and why other ways are always good to consider.

Easily on of my favorite movies of 2016! Laika Studios continues to impress with their latest stop-motion film. Not only is the story great with plenty of suspense and entertaining character moments, but the visuals are absolutely stunning! When you stop for a second and realize that what you are seeing are thousands of micro-movements that were patiently and meticulously moved by hand, you will really get a sense of the passion and ingenuity that went into this amazing film. I highly recommend this to movie fans and fans of animation.

In the latest film by Laika (Coraline, The Boxtrolls), the story of a young boy on a journey to save himself and his village is told in a very unique animation style. Origami plays a big role and the visuals capture the locations and characters beautifully. The story has some great moments, but a few dull ones as well. There is death and violence, but it is handled deftly. My kids (3, 4, & 9) were not scared or upset and understood what was happening most of the time. The ending was sweet, but not as powerful as I might have liked. Honestly, the story would work better as a series or miniseries as it can feel rushed at points; however, it is a great story at its core.
Overall, I'd still recommend it. It's good for parents who don't need a repeat of the "Let It Go" sensation as there is a great soundtrack, but few vocals. Kids will enjoy it and the parents can too.

Laika has outdone themselves again with another amazing, unique, and heartfelt adventure. They're creative style is wondrous to watch again. Fans of Coraline, Paranorman, or Boxtrolls will be treated to another work of art from Laika. I've seen Zootopia and Moana, both were amazing. Finding Dory was cute. But in my opinion, this is the best animated movie of the year. Great for all ages. Whether you're new to Laika or have watched their movies since Coraline, do yourself a favor and see Kubo.

When you think about the level of detail they put into this movie, you can't help but to be amazed. All the hours they put into making each character move, fight, and interact with each other, is just mind-boggling. The story was so good that you'll forget that its stop motion. You can't help but become emotionally attached to Kubo early on in the movie, because he has to take care of his mother and provide for her all alone. The story is both amazing, and heartwarming.

This movie had high expectations. I had heard a lot of good things but I did not expect it to be so GREAT. It had a great premise and the animation was glorious and the stakes grew and grew and the conflict was just serious enough to entertain the whole family. Disney/Pixar is too uptight to brave anything this daring and this animated feature really pulls all the stops. I immediately went and bought this after I was able to see it. I rarely do that.

This is a family favorite for us. With 2 littles and a teenager in our family, sometimes is hard to get is all together for a movie, but after convincing my wife about the movie, she started to get just as excited as my younger son and after seeing it in theaters, it turned into a must-have, so as soon as the DVD came out, my wife wanted more than anyone. Fantastic visuals, great story telling and I love the tone. Must see, must see, must see

Charlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey. Kubo amazes the people in his village with his magical gift for telling stories with origami. When he accidentally summons an evil spirit seeking vengeance, Kubo is forced to go on a quest to solve the mystery of his fallen samurai father and his mystical weaponry. Along the way he sis joined by a talking monkey and a bug in armor. I loved the art of this movie, I loved the voice talents in this movie and the story is heart warming and lovely. I will also say that it is somewhat predictable. But that is okay as the story is so wonderful and the characters are so well defined too. I recommend this for the whole family and would love to watch it again, myself.

This movie caught me by surprise. I bought it for my family. It seemed pretty cool from the cover and it was on sale, so I decided to get it. Its a movie like Coraline or Nightmare Before Christmas in which it's animated with still motion and/or animatronics. The tale itself is a good one and the actions scenes rival those of a Jackie Chan flick. This is now one of my current favorite movies. Do yourself a favor and check this movie out!

Laika - The hardest working studio in animation

If you have never looked behind the scenes at the work Laika studios does to bring their awesome movies to life, you really should. And all of this hard work really pays off, because I have enjoyed every other Laika film I have seen thus far - Kubo being no exception. While you will figure out what is going on in this one pretty easily and early, it still is riveting to see how the story will play out. Recommended.

This film is visually stunning. The 3D is top notch but, the non 3D Bluray is just as stunning. Stop motion is a dying art and it's fantastic to see a modern take on it. Each frame is painstakingly created with careful consideration and it shows. This is also a fantastic story for families, children and adults. You cant really go wrong. I always say animation is the best medium for the high definition format.

I loved this film, and shared it with my whole family. We enjoyed it, and were all eager to watch the disk's "making of" special features. Watching the creative process made our respect for this film and its creators even greater.

Being a huge fan of stop motion animation (The Nightmare Before Christmas) I have been excited every time Laika has released a new movie. This was one of their best and one of the best stop motion animation films of all time. -! Amazing story , amazing cast, and a ending I found very different from the typical cliche kids film. Please do yourself a favor and watch it with your kids. I love this movie

This was a fun movie that both parents and children will enjoy together. Good story and characters make this a hidden little gem to own. The video on this Blu-Ray was very good with a picture that is very clear and easy on the eyes. It is a very colorful movie will a sharp contrast.
Audio was very good as well. If you have a home theater, you will appreciate the audio on this Blu-Ray. Well defined voices, powerful music and great use of surround sound as well.
The 3D effect was fun to watch with lots of depth and a few pop out effects. Overall this was a impressive little gem of a movie that will be watched numerous times.
